There is a misconception that the Tiger was built around the 88mm. It was actually orginally designed to house the 75mm L/100. Only far into the development was the 88mm KwK 36 chosen to be the main armament.

I don't hang around the European forums or website very much so I'm not sure how prolific Challenger is being.
But at least Chieftain's also named after a british tank. One of these days WG is gonna get an old WWII tanker to be an advisor and name him Centurion to complete the set :P

I wish I was super knowledgeable about German tanks but I just lifted this info from The Chieftain's "Hello Kitty" article on the Tiger.
Basically, the initial requirement was for a 75mm Squeeze Bore cannon that can pen 100mm of armour (the Konisch in-game) and to see if an 88mm gun was viable. Since Tungsten was in short supply (Cause Konisch needs DEM GOLD ROUNDS!) it was replaced with the 75mm L/70 since it had similar characteristics to the 88mm L/56. (con't)

Hey, chill a bit. It's not WGs fault that Richard isn't as active as Nick. Also Nick has been doing it a lot longer and might have more support in these things. No need to be extreme :)

Check the article by the Chieftain called "Hello Kitty". He explains it well.

I wouldn't say it's totally hollow since it requires a whole new set of balancing that I bet will come. Originally it was designed with what I said in mind :)

But when the Krupp turret showed that it can hold the 88mm L/56 and later be up-gunned to the 88mm L/71 without changing the turret (plus the L/56 has new AP ammo). It was decided to just use the 88 for the sake of uniformity.
I still highly suggest reading the Chief's article, he goes into decent detail about it and it's a great read.

Everything is far slower in WoT (almost) because of engine limitations and engage distances

na i think the germans wanted a tank with the 88 not the 70L that was the panther
