Occasionally, they seem to flicker into their regular forms, but it’s just flashbacks to before, when they were our friends. I have decided to hide with Ruby and Bubble, the only other members of my team who have survived. We take shelter in the abandoned clearing just beyond the forest, where the thick trees cast shadows that mask our presence. Every creak and whisper of the leaves puts us on edge, reminding us of the twisted version of our friends that lurks nearby. At times, Ruby talks about running, but I know deep down that there’s nowhere to go. The forest stretches endlessly, and wherever we might flee, they would find us eventually. Bubble is quiet, her gaze distant, as though trying to make sense of what happened to them - to all of us. She mutters sometimes, her voice barely a whisper, “It wasn’t supposed to be like this.” But none of us know how it was supposed to be. We only know that something went wrong - terribly wrong. Today, we managed to find some food, just enough to keep us going. Ruby found some berries, and we took turns taking small bites, careful not to waste a single one. I could tell she was worried about what would happen when our food ran out. Even though she tries to stay upbeat, I can see the fear in her eyes. As night falls, we huddle closer, keeping our voices low, sharing memories of what life was like before. It’s strange how something so recent can feel like a lifetime ago. We remember the laughter, the lighthearted competitions, and the feeling of safety that seems so foreign now. But as we sit in silence, the realization hangs over us - those days might be gone forever. I don’t know what tomorrow holds, but I know one thing: we have to keep moving. We can’t let them find us.
