Kingsferry Lifting Bridge Isle of Sheppey with railway maintenance

This is the Kingsferry Lifting Bridge opened in 1960 spanning the Swale to the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. It was very windy this day and the railway track was being worked on by Network Rail. The bridge was raised for a tug and a couple of smaller boats.The wigwags on one side have been replaced by Unipart Rail LED lights but the vertical lights are still SGE. The sequence was not working correctly and holding a longer flash on one side than the other. The fading was the shutter speed on my camera unexpectedly getting caught on the wrong side to video the lift which was facing into the sun. The bottom vertical halogen kept cutting out randomly so looked very odd.

I'm proud to say ,my dad was one of the engineers who worked to build that bridge in the early 60's .Henry "Jack "Hill.

NOOOOO. They are replacing the rare SGE vertical wigwags. I am so pissed off. I wanted that for my museum. It is probably long since binned by now.

Don't worry the vertical wigwags are still there as of 22/06/17. They were just doing maintenance on the railway that day :)

When you get trapped on an opening bridge, you get lifted up in the air. Is that true?

In theory yes, but the operator wouldn't send it up if you were on it. He's right there looking out that window you see @0:45

OK then. Just for safety reasons. But will the operator let you off the bridge when you are trapped on it?

They wouldn't even close the gates if you were on it. It would be good to go up on it though :)
