NHL 99 review on the nintendo 64. Recorded using an Ultra HDMI modded N64 console with an Elgato game capture HD60s capture card using a real game cartridge. So who's looking forward to the N64 Mini Classic console? what do you think the top 5 or top 10 hockey games of all time are? Like me do you love the NHL Sega genesis / mega drive games like nhl 95?
As an 7 year old Canadian (who loved hockey) with a 64 in 1999 - I played the absolute crap out of this game. As a kid I didn't mind the announcer's voice and can still recall many of them by memory ("going northbound on a southbound freeway - look out")! Why do I think they didn't produce an NHL 2000? Perhaps they thought the N64 was too close to the end of it's life cycle? Love the channel man - it really brings me back. As a kid I had hockey practice every Friday night. Afterwards my father would take me over to "Smiley's" to rent a video game for the rest of the weekend. Did that for years. Those carefree times - oh how I'll never forget. Love your videos.

I can say without hesitation that this is my favorite N64 hockey game. I'd also say that in my opinion this is the best N64 hockey game as well.
I think id still prefer WG hockey
One of my favourite N64 games. Hilarious commentary, crisp visuals, brilliant menu soundtrack and fast action. There was a bug I discovered in that the stadium announcer (during breaks in the action) would only feature in Rookie mode which was strange.
One of my favorite hockey games ever. The announcer sounds like he was taken from a Midway sports game.

Played a ton of NHL 98 on my friend's PS1 so I was stoked when this came out for 64 the next year. This is one of my original cartridges I still have and play sometimes today. Something about the simplicity of it makes it more enjoyable at times than the yearly releases. And that soundtrack was the best on the 64.

This game looks absolutely gorgeous for the time! And if you dont think so look up MLB 99. The mo-cap is actually pretty good, but boy have those models aged horrifically.

Bill Clement still announces Flyers games from time to time. He is still terrible.

N64 Glenn Plant The whole flyers announcing crew has always been kinda bad. They don't say cheesy video game shit but they are always huge homers. They never think a penalty on a flyer is deserved. Bill is one of those old school guys that fawns over slow skating defensive types that hit and block shots and can't move the puck.

My favorite hockey game ever. The commentary is my guilty pleasure! "Welcome to the roadkill cafe!!!" Shame you didn't show any fights. My brother and I used to make on-the-fly sidebets and dares on the results of the fights.
This game is criminally underrated
Yeah, it is hard to say why EA only released 99. Maybe they felt they weren’t getting a good return on investment. The game sold around 400,000 on the 64 versus over a million on PlayStation (according to VG Chartz). Nothing to scoff at but maybe they were expecting more.

my n64 hockey game was nhl breakaway 98 or 99. I dont remember which but that game was fun despite my brother always kicking my ass lol

N64 Glenn Plant all I wanted was Blades of Steel 64!! Blades of Steel 99 is a disgrace to the legacy of the original game, imo
My favourite hockey game was NHL 98 on PC. This is not as well optimized but still brings me back
I personally never liked sports games on pc, much preferred point and click games on pc and FPS ones
My friends and I still played nhl 98 on pc even when we had nhl 99 and 2000. In my opinion nhl 98 was the best hockey game all time. Audio and such was way ahead of its time

Loved this game. My biggest gripe is that in the Season AI teams will never score more goals than two, when matches are simulated. :D

i remember me and my brother bugging our mom to buy it for us, NHL 99, Diddy Kong Racing and Turok extra controller memory pack cost like 623.50 Dollars lol i still remember exactly how much it was lol 20years later.
It is curious that there was no NHL 2000 on the N64. Maybe the developer (MBL Research) put all their effort in their next project Supercross 2000 and while EA put out a PS1 version of NHL 2000, perhaps they thought an N64 version would cost too much money to publish.

A sealed copy of this game on the N64 for 20 dollars, is it worth the buy?
I think so, anything sealed at 20 sounds okay in my mind if you plan to keep it sealed for collection purposes.
This was only hockey game i played for years then stepped into the new nhl game at the time nhl 12 😂 played that skiped over 13 then got 14 then became a every year buy
The Game doesn't look to bad, Sports games will be the last thing to get.
EA was very odd when it came to what games they would put out on the N64. It seems like Madden was the only sports series that got all the installments one would expect to see on the N64. NHL 99 was the peculiar case as to why we never saw other installment on the console. But there's a few more such as getting Triple play 2000, but not Triple play 99 or 2001 on the N64. Or Why Fifa 2000 never saw an n64 version when 3 other fifa games were released for the console.
yeah I too was always surprised by Fifa amongst all because even then it was their best selling game the company owned

Are you sure that this isn't running in Hi-Res mode?
It looks much too crisp to be the N64's usual resolution, not to mention that I'm seeing a lot of interlacing in this footage, implying 480i (576i?).
99.9% sure medium - would have loved to have seen a high res mode!
Medium? Would that be standard definition, but with a squashed horizontal resolution (512x448 or similar)?
I don't remember hearing the term "medium-res" before, but looking it up now, it was apparently used in some reviews and marketing back in the day.
Fifa 99 and NHL 99 on N64 run 640*240. Very sharp & clean indeed. Players look quite amazing at close, none jaggies at all, thanks to anti -aliasing. While NHL 99 is not as fun as Wayne's hockey -games, NHL looks like it's running on twice as powerfull machine. It's up there with Iguana's NFL and Baseball -games.
I just bought this for the PS1 being back in 2000 I did three seasons as the Rangers and I kinda wanna mess with the Aves this time around. "He's got the puck on a string"..

You know it's unfortunate that a some people think this console was disappointing. This console is probably my favorite Nintendo console. It has a good library of games. I think the N64 is underrated. Though they are right to say that the best titles were either ported or remade for newer consoles, I just can't seem to get into the as much as actually playing them on the N64.

Vigilante 8 both rampage games and 1080 snowboarding. Eventually though I will have the all. Oh and I just bought Resident Evil 2.

It is quite the head scratcher that EA only released one NHL title for the console. They usually release their sports games long after the current console generation has passed. Maybe something happened between Nintendo and EA at the time. I don't think the cost was any concern to EA either, the profits of an annual sports release always make up for that. Or maybe they just didn't like to develop for the hardware. I never got into the NHL series until the 7th generation if I'm being honest. I had Gretsky 3D, which I loved, and always went for the more extreme or over the top sports games for many years. Funny how those died out now.

Nintendo forced 3rd party devs to buy way too many cartridges at too high prices, which meant that hardly any 3rd party devs made money from the N64.
Remmembering from gaming news magazines at the time,that EA was blaming N64 for their loses,i think thats why no NHL 2000 .
