In a survey conducted by the Better Sleep Council, nearly half of American adults say they prefer a soft or very soft mattress. But as Sleepopolis Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta points out, there is such a thing as your mattress being too soft.
“An overly soft mattress may lead to poor spinal alignment and lack of support, contributing to discomfort in your back,” says Dr. Dasgupta. “It’s crucial to find a balance that supports your sleeping position while providing comfort.”
So while you may want your bed to feel cushioning and soft to the touch, you’ll also want it to provide the correct type of support for your sleeping position, in addition to accommodating your body weight/type and overall preferences.
