"More than a dozen House Republicans are expected to release legislation Tuesday that would impose more harsh work requirements on certain recipients of federal food aid, a clear signal that the GOP intends to target nutrition assistance in critical debt ceiling, budget, and farm bill talks.
Led by Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.), the measure would "expand the age bracket for able-bodied [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] recipients without dependents, who have to meet complicated work requirements," according to Politico, which obtained a copy of the bill ahead of its official introduction.
Johnson's legislation, which currently has 14 Republican co-sponsors, would broaden the SNAP work requirement age bracket for able-bodied adults without dependents to 18 to 65, adding 16 years to the current age ceiling of 49, Politico reported. Former President Donald Trump previously proposed raising the age ceiling to 62."

The median salary in the US is $44,225 in 2022. The majority of Americans (54.98%) make $50k per year or less, while only 18% of individual Americans make $100k per year or more. Let's take that $16B in oil and gas subsidies, along with the $100B waste in defense spending and use that for a $2,000 monthly UBI check for those making less than 50k, $1,500 for those making less than 75k and $1,000 for those making less than 100k. The United States will turn into a economic powerhouse! This will increase consumer spending power, create jobs, and students can get that college education without getting deep into debt! Let's stop the wasteful defense spending and subsidies going to the top 1% AND HELP THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! IT'S OUR MONEY ANYWAY! This would be just but bread crumbs compared to what the top 1% gets EVERY YEAR! If you want this to become a reality, three things must happen first: 1.STOP voting republican. 2.STOP voting for corporate democrats. 3. START voting for progressive candidates because they're the ONLY one's who TRULY care and will help the American people!

I remember once seeing this PSA years ago where 6 kids are in school & during lunch 1 of them has no food so a kid that brought their lunch gave the boy some chips. The PSA was about how roughly 1 in 6 kids in the U.S. face poverty in that they go hungry & for many lunch at school may be the only meal they get a day. So, this is why it's so important for programs like SNAP to remain in place to ensure we prevent actual living children from going hungry in the United States.

I’m on SNAP benefits currently. I had an emergency amount added to my benefits during the pandemic, totaling over $250. This month, the emergency amount was taken away from me this month, and now I only get $56 for SNAP benefits. I don’t have much to live on due being on disability. I live in Illinois - which a blue state. But even so, I don’t get much from my home state’s SNAP benefits, which goes by the name of LINK.
In the end, my point is that those on retirement, disability, Social Security, Medicare, and SNAP benefits never get enough to live off of each month.

They want 20 somethings and to fire or lay them off once they hit their mid to late 30s. This has been the case since the 80s. The older you are the harder it is to get those jobs. That is why so many people are stuck at places like walmart. Many of the more privilaged by me are discovering this fact and they dont like it. They sold their homes and everything they owned. They are now working at walmart. They are in their 30s and cant find a job like what they had. It is way more complicated than you people know. Personally I think all elected officials should go through some form of empathy training especially those that are involved in things like financial and medical support systems including not just physical health but mental health as well. The work requirements are for anyone who is not really sick.
These work requirements are for the state to send people to work in the absolute worst jobs for no money
And like where I am it takes two and a half hours to drive to the welfare office and you are required mandated to drive to the welfare office every morning and check in and then they tell you where you have to go to work and then after 6 hours you have to drive back to the welfare office and check out
And very quickly what you realize is for the $50 a month in food stamps that you get you have to spend $50 a day to drive to your mandatory work site and to the welfare office and back and forth twice in a day
And so you quickly don't ask for benefits because it will cost you so much money it's insane and no one would ever do that and they say look how great we are that we incentivized people to go to work and now they have signed the waiver that they don't want food
    Our plan works
It's like if you attach electrodes to the genitals of people who are doing something you don't want them to end you say you just have to crank the generator 50 times to get what you want and the people say nevermind I don't need whatever it was that they were asking for and you say
See they really didn't want it they really didn't need it and I'm a genius for creating this program that gets them off whatever it was that they were wanting
It's like when the Germans created the work camps because they didn't want Jewish people in their country and the Jewish people left rather than go to the camps
    It's just like that

With that said, it would likely mean raising taxes on me... Which may not be a big deal if I get more back in SNAP benefits..

I wouldn’t be opposed to a work requirement if the benefits weren’t a joke. What’s $300 a month doing for these people? Rice and beans? I have an idea: if I’m working for SNAP, pay me in living terms - $2,000 month.

Ironic that all our politicians who want to cut benefits for the poor and force the elderly to return to work after paying into their social security, their retirement fund, their entire working lives, are very wealthy. If they had to suffer for anything for one minute, all talk of these cuts would stop !!

Liberal Colorado has had a community service requirement to get snap for years . At 60 I broke my back in five places and seven ribs . I still had to do community service to get snap . So I worked at the food bank and habitat for humanity . I have no complaints . I felt like I was earning the benefit and helping out my community at the same time . Plus I could get a lot of perfectly good food that the food bank routinely throws out . What was inedible I fed to my chickens .

While it's good it worked out for you, what if you couldn't even do that? Would it be right to let people starve? I'm all for encouraging people to do something that makes them feel useful, but not if it puts you in danger, if you're physically unable to work, and therefore in danger of having no ability to get food!
