How To Become a Military Nurse | Life as a Critical Care Nurse

  • In this video, I had the opportunity to chat with Lt. Jay Nichols about her reasons for joining the military, day to day life as a Critical Care Nurse, Air Force commissioning process, and more!
Jeris "Jay" Nichols is a graduate of the University of South Carolina Mary Black School. She started her nursing career as a new graduate when she moved from SC to Rochester, MN for a new grad position in the Medical/Surgical ICU unit at the Mayo Clinic. It was there at the Mayo Clinic where she began her true nursing career. The immense knowledge and guidance she received was far beyond what she could have expected as a new graduate. It was during the year of 2016 that she was also was presented with an opportunity to join the Air Force.
This opportunity came sooner than expected and after a year long application process she found out she was accepted into the Air Force Nurse Corp in the beginning of 2017. After working over a year and a half at Mayo Clinic, Jeris said goodbye to the best hospital foundation she believes she could have had as a new graduate nurse. Moving forward into her new military career she had to complete the mandatory five and a half week Commisioned Officer Training course and since then she has been at her first duty station as a Critical Care Nurse in the Air Force!

At age 35 I sought to join the national gaurd(army)something I considered but didn’t do right after graduating RN school in 1994. And had regretted numerous times over the years. But here’s the kicker- they don’t/ won’t let you unless you have a BSN. Well I hope during this tome of crisis and deployment those BSNs are really mattering. Cause at the end of the day the 2 extra years of bullshit paper writing doesn’t save lives. I think the military should reconsider this policy.

    • @element587dude7

Yeah unfortunately we all go to MEPS. Its kind of a safety concern, the military will generally pay you for any injury you received during your service. If I was you I'd try to go again because that hearing test is pretty weird with the light beeps and all. Good luck

    • @antoniowebbmd

    • @daltonater1212

      Soooo this question is difficult.
From what I heard, they DID in the early 2000's but they figured out that why would you need a RN-BSN to do a paramedics job?
I believe now they only have flight medics for helicopters.
However, the Air Force does have ICU flight nursing. Basically injured soldiers from overseas needing emergency transport to Germany or the states will be transported in a large, cargo like plane fitted with a fully functioning ICU.
