Hunting Hornworms with a Blacklight

  • Here's an organic (and fun) way to protect your tomato plants from hornworms (also known as cutworms). These huge caterpillars will blend in during the day, but a blacklight will help you easily find them at night before they destroy your hard work. Like many insects, they'll wipe out a plant before you know it.

Those lights are really handy! We had more trouble with deer eating the tops off my tomato plants this year than with horn worms but we are still using our black light flash lights on a regular basis.
Cutting them is a good idea. We pick them off by hand and squish them…yuck! I’m going to try your method.

Thank you for the message. I have a suggestion for the deer - try planting onions under your tomatoes. They make a great companion plant and you can harvest them at the end of the year also. I tried it this year and have had zero problems with the deer - in the area that I didn't have onions, the tomatoes were nipped at the tops. Hope this helps. Have a great week.
