  • This is a video about the Levitation 4 aircraft from Tapanee Aviation, and landing this STOL (short takeoff and landing) airplane on the beautiful lakes of northern Canada. And fishing those lakes for walleye and pike. Including clips of the beautiful fall colors from the air.
    This video also demonstrates the characteristics of the Levitation 4 aircraft, and why it has such superior performance, and how this full sized aircraft can get off the ground and land with in a 100 feet.

    What a beautiful aircraft! I wanted to become a private pilot when I was young. Ended up I became a hang glider pilot - which was more affordable - way back in 1975 when I was 19 years old. I'm 67 now and still fly HGs. But when I see videos like this I wish I'd gotten a private pilot's rating. I'd love to be doing what you are doing! Love the mink thief story! LOL BTW - I live very close to where Glen Curtis invented the "flying boat". He did that in Hammondsport, NY.

      Thank you very much, I just got my pilots license last year, I was 65 it's not too late. I really couldn't afford it when I was younger ether, or I would have done it a long time ago.
      I watched your video flying the hang glider, that was really cool and a bit scary, particularly the takeoff just over the trees. I did a bit of hang gliding when I was young back in the early 80's. Before my frontal lobe had developed. 😅 It was fun, and you looked like you were having a lot of fun in your video.

      I don't think the Dynon ever shows zero but it is fairly accurate when flying and compared to the ground speed on Foreflight.

  • @sblack48
    @sblack48 ปีที่แล้ว

    Like everything there is a cost. Slats allow the wing to continue operating at AoAs higher than a similar unslatted wing. So to fully exploit them you need to increase your ground attitude so that your aircraft can achieve a higher AoA in the flare without hitting tail first. You might also need more tail authority to get to the higher max AoA. On some float planes you won’t be able to rotate to an AoA that fully utilizes the maximum lift provided by the slats. The major downside to slats is drag. They really slow you down if they are not retractable. If you look at a zenith 701 it can get off after a ridiculous takeoff roll, but you won’t be getting anywhere fast. For every 5 mph you lower your stall speed by adding aerodynamic devices or wing area you pay a big penalty in terms of cruise speed. So you need to ask yourself do I really need to takeoff on a 50 ft gravel bar that one time (maybe you do?) and am I willing to pay 10 kts in cruise on every flight to do it. In my view an unslatted wing on say a super cub or a husky can make for a better all around airplane but I’m not an outdoorsman or a fisherman. we all see things differently

    • @Scotts_Outdoor_Channel
      @Scotts_Outdoor_Channel  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a really good comment, The slats do retract while in cruise, but this is not a really fast aircraft. I usually cruise around 90 knots, sometimes 100 but no faster than that. I would like to fly faster most of the time. Although that is a fairly common speed for this class of aircraft. It is bigger then a Cessna 172 and has more power and useful load but the speed is the same more or less. But that's where the comparison ends. I put wheels on in the winter, and I get off the ground between 100 and 200 feet, and landing in similar distances. This doesn't make much difference at an airport, but on a field or a small lake it is a big advantage. I spend most of the summer landing on small remote lakes, so it is important to me. But it could take 2 or 3 hours to get from southern Ontario to northern Ontario, and that"s a drag for sure. I was looking at a Seawind, it's pretty fast. but it needs a lot bigger lake to land in.
      Anyway your comment got me thinking a bit. You should check out the video that I put out, it's all about stol landing and takeoffs. th-cam.com/video/VlTBr66W49s/w-d-xo.html

I know I can do it with less especially on wheels, but watching the trees getting closer gives me the willies.

    Correction: pickerel is not the Walleye, Sauger, Perch family. Google. :The main difference between walleye and pickerel is that walleye is from the perch family, while pickerel belongs to the pike family. Additionally, walleyes have an olive or gold color, while pickerels are primarily olive with a somewhat greenish tint.

    • @Scotts_Outdoor_Channel
      @Scotts_Outdoor_Channel  ปีที่แล้ว

      I stand corrected, all these years Americans have come to Canada to fish with us and have called the fish Walleye and we have always called them Pickerel. When I read your comment, I looked it up, and this is what I found on Google; Both are freshwater fishes found in Canada and North America. In Canada, the walleye is locally called a pickerel, which adds to the confusion. However, although the walleye may be called pickerel in some parts of Canada, walleye and pickerel are not the same fish.... So as you can see my confusion, we in Canada have been calling Walleye Pickerel all of my lifetime anyway. From the pictures on the article, the fish I have been catching are Walleye and not Pickerel.
      So thank you, I will not be calling them Walleye any longer.
