Oh wow you actually had some production value on this vid. Nice work man!! As a OG rider who has been riding since the beginning, this was super interesting for me to watch. I’ll be referring people here who have a similar background as you and ask me about learning to ride. Congrats and welcome to the Float Life!! It’s full of constant questions about the board and super fun experiences haha. Peace man!

Keep your front foot as far back as possible (close to the fender) and your back foot further back, and bend your knees. Try not looking down so much and just concentrate on where you want to go! You’re doing great bud, keep it up!

Great vid! I am a 45 year old dude who has never ridden a skateboard and isn't particularly athletic or coordinated, and I bought a OneWheel. It took me about 5 times out before I started to really "get it" and have a lot of fun. My 8 year old daughter and my wife, both amazingly coordinated and athletic, picked it up immediately. We practiced exclusively on grass for the first few times out and that was a wise decision, because I fell hard more than once. Now I prefer riding on on the road or paved trails, and occasionally going off road on hard packed dirt trails. The nice thing is you can go pretty much anywhere with this beast.
I would suggest getting the Craft & Ride magnetic fender. It's the same price as the OW fender and you can take it off and put it on as needed. And trust me, you're going to want to ride without a fender, it's quieter and it just looks way cooler! You may think you don't care about that but you will. Especially when you realize heads are going to be turning like crazy to check you out. You also will need to remove your fender for cleaning, maintenance, etc and it makes your life a whole lot easier.
I have heard great things about the ProRide Traction Pads for Onewheel™, also available at Craft & Ride. They are a soft super grippy pads that replace your Onewheel grip tape. Apparently they do wonders for control and foot fatigue. I have some on the way.
And for the love of gawd, wear protective gear. I'd be dead, or at the very least drooling on myself in a brain injury ward, if I hadn't been wearing a helmet. I also would most likely have broken my wrists and/or shattered my knees and elbows on more than one occasion. Even really good riders fall...it's going to happen.

This helped, I’m in the same mode now, 66 years old out of shape compared to all you 20 year olds, 4 days in and I got two big crashes and a sore groin muscle, taking today off to heal. My take away so far, WEAR every piece of padding you can find, Helmet and wrist guards at the very minimum. This thing can turn and bite you in a New York minute. So fast your not even sure what happened. Give yourself a break, these are new muscles that will take a while to train, don’t let yourself get sucked into speed- the board will try to pull you into higher speed than your untrained feet and ankles can stabilize, then you start to wobble and there’s a good chance you are going airborn. The pavement is not friendly and gravity is a cruel mistress. Don’t go faster than you can reliably control, learn the fundamentals first - speed much later. Baby steps. Better to go slow than to try and power through, get hurt and end up selling your board. This not a race it is journey.
I learned a few things I will try, thanks for the words of encouragement I need them while I heal.

Dan, Thanks for this incredible video. Your willingness to show your struggle is a great inspiration for a guy like me who is taking longer than 15 minutes to master the Onewheel. I've had my pint a little over a week. I'm still in the back yard. I think today, I'll get out on the pavement. My progress has been slow, but it's still progress. I try to get better each time I get on my pint.

Great video. I had a lot of foot cramps at first too but it got better as my balance improved and could change positions while riding. I think it happened because of trying to hold steady in the same position all the time. Carving helps because you change the stresses on feet from toe side to heel side back and forth.

Ive surfed and skated for a long time. I just purchased my first onewheel and I totally love it. At first it felt a bit weird. it does not ride like a surfboard or a skateboard and I actually found it to be a lot more difficult riding in the grass than on the concrete. Once you start to zoom around a bit it is not so bad. Just keep going

    • @SlideWreckDan
      @SlideWreckDan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Very cool! Yes it definitely is different. But I think there a few elements that transfer over to help get started.
Yes, grass is harder to ride on, but having the practice on grass gave me confidence to ride on pavement even more as a beginner. I also felt a lot more safer because I just felt like I was going to fall all the time. Pavement is definitely easier to ride though!

I would like to say I'm in the extreme category of beginners and more of the steeper side of the learning curve. I let a 40+ year old man try it once and he has been skating all his life. He got used to the Onewheel in seconds. A couple minutes in and he was already turning, speeding, slowing down, even got the dismount right. It just depends case by case how the learning curve is.
And I agree. I always try to wear a helmet.

I may be biased if I say the OneWheel because I'm absolutely loving it haha! But I haven't tried the boosted board so I can't say with good credibility on this. I will say though the best part about the OneWheel is not worrying about going over train tracks or most sidewalk cracks and whatnot as to a smaller wheel would catch on it. They both have their pros and cons, but considering where I live has rough road conditions it's a definite OneWheel for me!

had the board for 14 months with repeated minor issues before it was no longer ridable and needed significant additional cost to repair and bring back to original working order. Had to send it in 2x. The first was 2 weeks after i received it because it overcharged and just shut off while i was riding and didnt turn on again, repairs were covered under warranty. In the next 13 months i was constantly reaching out for minor troubleshooting, like reduced range, inaccurate app information making it challenging to plan a trip and the board tilting up unexpectedly. Finally, to its demise, the range of the board dropped to 2 miles with constant inaccurate range assumption in the app putting me in the position to lug the board around or having to cab to my destination because i couldn't accurately plan my trip. I was a loyal customer for 5 years since their kickstarter days and bought 3 boards, the last being the XR. My constant support and numerous referrals still landed me with a $480 bill to get this lemon board back in working order. Customer service was challenging to work with suggesting i use financing for repairs when i express several times it's a matter of principle that i won't pay their invoice for a lemon board that will likely fail again and the disregard for my long lasting and extremely supportive relationship that in the end was one-sided. Will never buy another product from them again. Boostedboard is already publicly reaching out to me with discounts and promises to treat me like a valued customer.

also another alternative to this thats cheaper and better specs is an electric unicycle, WAIT its not what you think, its the same way of controlling like the onehwheel, take a look at the ninebot one z10 for example, same price as onewheel plus xr, but much better specs, there are many other choices, i learned riding one in 1 day, some can take up to 2 weeks, im not into sports, i dondt ride skateboard, the only thing that i rode was a kick scooter before, and i also have flat foot, but mine is very extreme, you just need to get used to it and it will hurt less, but try to get some shoes that are good for flat feet, that helps a lot with riding flat foot,

It doesn't feel like an "exercise" in the sense that I'm out of breath because there's no cardio, but for the first month my calf was burning (as well as my feet). As of right now, my lower body still feels tired after a while, but I can ride about 2 miles on smooth roads before taking a short break for my foot and legs. I do sweat a lot because it's over 100F where I am at. I have to make sure I'm well hydrated.
You can definitely use this as a commuter, it just took me a while to even be able to ride on roads confidently. Like I mentioned in the video, it may take time to get used to for some people, but if you put in the effort to do so it's a really really fun way to go places. I bought mine locally through Craigslist, but you can also get it from eBay, Facebook marketplace, etc etc.. Wherever used items are sold see if anyone is selling one used.
