    Article:
The B1 is one of the most famous and recognized French tank designs of the interwar era. The heaviest tank used in the campaign of France outside of the rare FCM 2C, notable for its dual gun configuration mounting a turreted 47 mm anti-tank gun and a hull-mounted 75 mm infantry support gun, the B1 and B1 Bis often have a reputation of strong armor and firepower that largely outclassed their opponents, not so different from the later German Tiger I and II in how they are viewed in popular imagination. The story and capacities of the B1 are far more complex though and go back all the way to the 1920s

You haven't mentioned the Char B1 Ter, which had 75mm. of frontal armour and the hull 75mm. L.17 Sa-35 had 15 degrees of traverse.

Why does the 75mm barrel have so much material around it? Why not install longer barrels in both, especially the 47mm, 50+ calibers would have made for a much better muzzle velocity and penetration and the 75 could have been as long as the tracks extend in front of it at least.

The 75mm barrel is already inches away from the tracks. Any longer and it is in danger of getting debris in it when traversing rough terrain. As for the 47mm, the turret looks quite small, it doesn't look like it can handle much more unbalanced weight. The long 17lber gun on the Sherman firefly required a heavy counterweight to balance the turret, which was not the most ideal.

Some of the barrel weight would be useful to balance the gun from its breech I guess.

@@Edax_Royeaux All great points. Videogames & modern design philosophy have trained us to expect a certain degree of ingrained modularity & the ability to quickly update/upgrade armored war machines.
Yet, the truth, even today, is far more messy. Tanks were, & in many ways still are, holistic weapon systems. Often walking a finely balanced line of reliability without over engineering within the understood limitations of the materials... & even today often failing in the first or second attempts.

If memory serves me correctly I do recal that German gunners quickly realised that the side radiator louvers was a critical weak spot.

Does anyone want to buy a French tank? Abandoned only once. :)
