This is the most interesting video I've seen on this channel so far. Some of the games you mentioned are ones I personally love, but I enjoyed the analytical approach you took to explaining your distaste for them... it ended up coming off as a thoughtful analysis, rather than just airing complaints. It'd be cool to see a sequel video along the lines of "Games I love, But You Hate".

Far be it from me to underestimate the ability of people to become unreasonably angry about things they see on the internet, but my gut feeling is that you think this video will rankle people more than it probably actually will. I feel like there really isn't anything worth being annoyed about in this video -- you're just exploring why you dislike certain popular games, while also making it fully clear that you see other people's love of those games as valid. Plus, all of your reasons are pretty fair and well-explained.

Its hard to compare Zelda as a person that played and found everything when it was new(also no internet/walk through). And an adult with responsibilities etc. Every waking moment not in school was spent playing by myself or a friend. Endless hours searching and discovering was almost a positive at that age. I understand your position. My kids got stuck multiple times and had to come to dad to give them hints.

It's good to see somebody speaks their mind of some of the games out there. I remember beating Link To The Past many years ago, it was hard and i had to talk to my friends and vice versa when i was stuck in the game. ALTTP has a very specific small thing which i have been calling absolute bullcrap ever since first playing it back in childhood days. The digging challenge outside Thieves Town. The entire reason is because it is randomized. Everytime i start a playthrough i dread this shit because you have no idea if the thing will take 5 minutes of 5 hours. It is raw luck and nothing else. Obviously you don't need the price which is a heartpiece to beat the game but if you want to complete all hearts which i'm a little obsessed about then you HAVE to do this sooner or later 😂😂 On top of this it also costs you rupees each time. I assume this was done with the intention to still give experienced players a little challenge on the way but it is just annoying as hell instead.

So Link to the Past... There is a way to activate the floor switches so there are no gaps between you and the big chest in the Skull Woods dungeon. Crossing over the edge of the gap is a glitch or oversight.
Also, as someone who struggled with Mega Man games as a kid because I would always try and conserve boss weapons until the boss and struggled through Heckran's Cave in Chrono Trigger because I tried to conserve my MP, don't be afraid to use your other weapons to defeat the enemies. Playing the game linearly, you haven't missed anything yet. The next sword upgrade actually happens to be on opposite map (dark world v light world) of an upgrade that cuts magic consumption in half. You have access to the magic upgrade. You don't have access to the sword upgrade yet but you do have access to the item you need to get the sword upgrade. Part of what I like about LTTP is that once you access the Dark World and tackle the first dungeon there, the game opens up and you can do things out of order without glitches or exploits.
You are going to want the magic upgrade for the 5th Dark World dungeon by the way.

I played the original a lot as a kid, so I know my way through that one pretty well, but every time I pick up any Zelda game past the original I get confused nearly immediately about what exactly I need to do or where I need to go, etc. I get they're supposed to be about exploration, about the adventure, but a little bit of guidance really wouldn't hurt

We know where everything is now and forget that for someone new to the game, it is very cryptic and difficult to figure out. That was actually part of the lore to some games. It kept the conversations flowing and strats being passed on the bus or in school. Games are all about fun though and if you don't have fun with a game, then that is all good. I've played all the old consoles, like genesis, master system, neo geo (thanks, rich friend), nes..snes... zx spectrum, etc etc. And i can say that the devs weren't joking, when they were fine tuning the difficulties...
Many.. if not most games, if we were lucky, they had a health bar with 3 or 4 hearts, maybe 2 or 3 lives, and 2 continues. And that was GENEROUS. There are games, with just 3 lives, and that's all. 1 hit= 1 life gone. 3 lives ? Game over !
Today, people will complain if there isn't a super-easy mode.

the thing is that what he shows in the video is actually not the solution. the real solution is to walk over one of those star tiles, which opens/closes holes in the floor. a mechanic you absolutely had to learn in the 3rd lightworld dungeon. I was actually stunned that this could be a problem to someone.
I didn't even know you could walk around the edges of the holes until like 5 years ago.
I don't mean this as an insult or anything, but not paying attention might be the issue here.

I really enjoy your content and most of these seem reasonable enough, except Zelda. The examples you gave had painfully obvious solutions ("where animals gather" requires almost zero travel - just to the light world and the room with the blocks, well let's just say there are more interactive elements in that room). Now, if you try you're best and just can't get into it, that's cool. No harm done. Keep up the good work.

Maybe this is different now, but how Zelda games were played when I was a kid was as a community. Like I'd go over to a friend's house, he'd suggest playing his new Zelda game, and I'd watch for a while and make suggestions. Then I'd take over with a new save slot and I'd try things different. If we got truly stuck we'd talk about it at school lunch and see if anybody we knew had figured it out, or had suggestions. Stuff like that.

Sooo I played and beat A Link to the Past at the age of 11 and it took me nearly a year to beat. But that was the magic of it. Getting lost and finally finding the solution or the way forward was such an exciting experience. And finally beating the game felt like a huge accomplishment at the time. I think most who widely praise this game had a similar experience (in childhood) and are swayed by that magical, nostalgic feeling. I didn't play it in the age of 100 easily accessible walkthroughs one search away making the game seem like more of an adventure. Imo gaming is kinda ruined by this and it's something I'm certainly guilty of nowadays. Anyways, just my thoughts. Great video mate!
P.S.- Your example of being stuck in the dungeon with the pull lever; walking along the edge is a trick and not the intended way. The intended way is stepping on a star block that changes the floor layout and walking up from the bottom. Cheers!

Ima huge Zelda fan, wasn’t upset. (Not that I’m actually cause it’s just opinions) but the earthworm Jim hurt. It is a finesse control scheme. Mainly the hard work you really have to put it with the D-pad while precise button controls. The hidden items you really have to work for but they are all very obtainable. Hope you put in the work, it’s rewarding in the pure originality it has

(Sorry for the upcoming long post.)
I had thoughts on every game you listed but the TH-cam app crashed and I don’t have the patience to retype all of that stuff up again. Instead, I’ll just share my negative opinions on another game many people enjoyed: *The Thing* on PS2.
It’s a sequel to the 80s John Carpenter movie of the same name (which I, admittedly, never watched even to this day). Many people sang this game’s praises in comment sections and one person on another website even suggested the game for me when I was looking for horror-themed games to play. What got me interested were the promises of the Fear/Trust system (managing your squad mates’ fear so they don’t try to kill you or themselves) and the Infection system (making sure your squad mates haven’t turned into a disguised Thing by using one of your limited blood test kits on them). Eventually, I found the game at a thrift store or pawn shop (can’t remember which one) for cheap and bought it for myself.
First off, the combat either aged like milk or was never good to begin with. People try to defend this by pointing out how old the game is but I’m the same man who can play LS1 survival horror games with tank controls just fine so that excuse doesn’t fly with me. Second, the Fear/Trust system is super easy to manipulate. Dark areas, Things and even your own actions spooking a squad mate? Don’t worry! Just hand them one of the many guns you’re carrying, even if it’s the crappiest one with no bullets inside, and they’ll be willing to go to Hell in a hand basket for you! Problem solved!
Finally, the Infection system, the biggest reason why I bought the game in the first place, is absolutely worthless. There’s a point in the game where you have to face a bunch of Things in a building. After my squad and I took care of the threat, we go in one of the rooms that has some stairs leading down. Before taking the stairs, I decide to do the blood test on my two squad mates because there were parts in the fight where we got separated. The two pass the test with flying colors. I then make my way to the stairs and, before I can even begin to walk down them, my squad mates transform into Things and start attacking me. Apparently, the game has scripted moments where squad mates turn even if they just passed the blood test mere SECONDS ago.
This was the final straw for me. After realizing the feature I was looking forward to the most didn’t mean squat, I paused the game, looked up a FAQ and, after realizing I was only about halfway through the game, I stopped my play through altogether. The game itself wasn’t even that hard. I definitely could have finished it had I pushed on but it just isn’t worth my time or patience.

F-Zero is one of the greatest racers ever made but I get why we don't appreciate it the same. I had the game since 1991 and my 2 brothers and I would work our tails off to have the record time for each track. It's battery backup saved our course records which was not common back then. That one-upmanship had all 3 of us had made us memorize each track, strategize when is it best to use turbo boost on each track and which vehicle to use. Once you get enough hours invested into the game something weird happens. You find yourself in a Zen Like state where you are racing around the track avoiding enemy cars with inhuman like precision. Later on in College my Roommate and I also got into F-Zero one-upsmanship battles. I recall friends visiting and smoking herbs and they would just trip out watching me and my roommate dong incredible stuff on F-Zero. The game required you to have a competitive friend/family member to keep pushing each other to do better to reach that Zen like state.

First: Love your Title Bar ;)
F-Zero: Didn't liked it back then, nowadays i can get some enjoyment out of it, but it really isn't such a great Title.
Alleyway: Yeah, i think a Game you have to play once and than you can leave it forever.
Zelda 3: Love it, guess you are just not the Type of Person for it. Got through it back then by myself, guess you just need a natural "Mess around Instinct".
But hey, my Wife gets lost in Pokemon Red/Blue.
Contra 4: Never played it, but i couldn't play it on the 3DS, just can't play Plattformers if the D-Pad isn't parallel to the Action Buttons. DS, hm maybe.
    Landstalker: Never played.
Viewtiful Joe: Was really seing forward because of the Graphics, but i did not like it at all.
Strider: I don't get Fun out of it. -> Streets of Rage is the real Sega Master Piece.
Metal Gear Solid: Love it, so i disagree with you ;) But Metal Gear is pretty cinematic, was dividing ever since.
Donkey Kong Country: I love this Game, but my controversial Opinion is: I like it much much more than the second, i even dislike the second and i prefer the third.
Kid Cameleon: Got first into Mega Drive Games 2017, i didn't liked that one.
Castlevania 4: I like it, got me even to like this Series, got Adventure on the Gameboy as Kid and thought the whole Series is bad. This was like being enlighted haha.
Zombies ate my Neighbours: Ah i guess it is ok? Played it on a Friends House back then and until today, i never got the Feeling that i want it.
Zillion: Can't say something about it.
Earthworm Jim: Yeah, it looks really good but, i agree with everything you say about it. No, the Genesis Version isn't better, plays the same.
Midnight Resistance: First Time i see it.
Metroid Pinball: First Time i see it.
Advance Wars: I should love it, but i can't get the Connection to it.
Phantasy Star: Still have to get real into it, but the fourth is really great, imo one of the best Sega Games.

    - Earthworm Jim
...has always been bonkers difficult and far too awkward, leaving me mostly unmotivated to get better at it. It has too much of what I call "hidden language BS" ...because even with what makes sense, I still feel like the game fails to teach me what I need to know to get good. Eventually people can get a feel for the necessary inputs, but there's quite a bit of which remains seemingly impossible to learn for my experience to improve.
    - Donkey Kong Country
...is much less awkward, and I pushed myself until I could get past difficult sections such as the mine cart sections with the feeling of intense challenge, instead of agonizingly hitting a wall again and again, and I can play with different controllers and still get good. I felt extremely determined to get past each level, because I desperately wanted to see what the next level was going to be like. Not as good as the other SNES sequels, but I'm glad I got to experience DKC as a kid. The challenge to me was very clear pretty much every time, because if I got hit by a hazard or baddie, I lost a kong. If anything, the orangutan baddies were actually frustrating every time I encountered them.
    - Phantasy Star
...bleh. I would rather play other RPGS.
    - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
...I'm unsure if I can convey my first experience properly, but I know I ENJOYED getting lost, and my memorization of this game got really sharp. The most confusing dungeon was Ice Palace, with Misery Mire not far behind. I do know now I dread those two dungeons the most whenever I go to replay the game. Skull Woods was mostly a breeze, until I got to the boss. I'm sure I got stuck from time to time, but the neurologicals in my brain seem to fail to recall my full first experience. I knew I was very entranced when I first dove into it as a kid.

Funny, Skull Woods was also where I decided that Link to the Past wasn't for me. Part of the issue is that I grew up on 3D Zelda, and I am just terrible when it comes to the depth perception of 2D Zelda. So I took a lot of hits when using the sword. I also don't like the dark world overworld very much. It feels like enemies are attacking you every waking second and you have no room to breathe. So, when I died at one of the outside portions of the Skull Woods dungeon, and the game kicked me back to the beginning of the dark world instead of the beginning of the dungeon, I said, "Yeah, I'm all set with this game." lol
Like you, I love the music and overall presentation of the game. I even bring the soundtrack up when doing projects from time to time. So, I can't really say that I "hate" it. Maybe someday I'll get back to the game and finish it.

SCIV was the first Castlevania I ever played, and to me will always be the gold standard. It's not as hard as the NES games but that's not exactly a bad thing either. And the difficulty does ramp up in the later stages.
Plus there's the second quest which is much more challenging.
I never thought the sprites were all that large: to me they seem about average for a 16 bit platformer. I honestly feel the sprites on Castlevania Bloodlines on the Genesis are on the small side myself. But I can see how someone who grew up with the 8 bit games would prefer the smaller sprites in Bloodlines.

kid chameleon is a game of memorization and control pad proficiency, you gotta play a lot of times, every time memorizing a bit more and getting a bit better at the controls, you have to memorize where to find hidden boxes and where it is best to use each mask, etc., also collect lifes and continues to use on the last levels, where gameplay is harder and you’re not able to repeatedly play to memorize; very hard game, i don’t think one is expected to get to the end without this all (except for the second level cheat, of course)

  • @Thefufflylord

Surprisingly enough, I found myself agreeing with most of this. Games like F-Zero and Mario Kart on the SNES are interesting from a historical standpoint and should be respected, but they are very primitive and don't tend to hold up, certainly not when compared to their 3D counterparts. Some styles of games just work better in 3D or 2D. Contra works better in 2D, F-Zero works better in 3D. What I like about this list is that you never state these are bad games, you just give your reasons why you personally don't care for them or why they don't click with you. Something can be excellent or even objectively perfect, but that doesn't mean you'll like it. Perhaps it's just a style that doesn't connect with you. I also like how you've had the strength to admit when you've changed a stance on a game. All in all, great video!

I think part of liking a game has to do with timing and your particular mood/mindset when you first play it (right time, right place). I feel like sometimes if a game doesn't hit just right when you first play it, you're never gonna like it. Metal Gear Solid is a perfect example for me. I consider it one of my favorite games of all-time, but I'm not sure if I'd feel that way if I hadn't been so hyped for it and had my mind blown by it as a kid. I can imagine if I played it for the first time now or even a couple years after it came out, I probably wouldn't have as much love for it.

16:51. Fair enough we all have our own opinions. DK Country, was one of my childhood games, when my cousin had it on the Super Nintendo. Over 20 years later I, have brought the SNES and a copy of DK Country from the second hand store. (Long before covid lock down)

Your segment on Zelda:LttP has me doing a Pablo Escobar meme in my livingroom. I've beaten it so many times and gotten so good at the patterns of the game that I can 000 beat the game (not save or die once during a playthrough). I can't really recall any time that I was "stuck" in the game... this coming from a guy that on the first playthrough of the Original Zelda took 2 years to find where level 2 was. I didn't have the extra maps -- In hindsite I think my mom or dad accidently threw the secondary book away after opening the game, not realizing what they were. I found and completed every other dungeon by that point except for 2 and, of course, 9. Given this, I can understand how these games can lead to sticking points. I'm just trying to remember my first playthroughs to think if I've ever had those sticking points. I'm sure I must have, but I've just played it too much since and have stored the entire game to memory.
That said, the part where you were stuck with the gaps in the floor leading to the switch (crystal #3 - Skull Woods), the solution you found exploited a glitch. You're not actually supposed to be able to walk the edge of the hole in the manner that the game allows, and the actual solution is much much easier. It has to do with stepping on the star patterns in a neigboring room to change the floor configuration where the hole leading to the switch disappears. The mechanic was introduced in the Tower of Hera (Pendant of Wisdom).

Not knowing what to do and feeling like there is a huge world to explore is what made Zelda great. Especially in a time before widespread internet use. Not too much hand holding and exploration was a must.
To each their own. Funny how a negative for some can be a positive for so many others.

Also funny how Elden Ring brought this notion back. The "Ubisoft open world" formula seemed to be a solution for that for years and people became sick of that.

Your reasoning for Link to the Past is understandable. That being said; it’s difficult playing an open world game from that era as not only was it completely new, but due to this, people have trouble thinking in the modern open format of gameplay. Which LTTP oddly was overall. A modern retro game

I don't recall what my solution was but I know for sure I never walked along that narrow strip of floor in Link to the Past.

@7:30 you are not supposed to do that. obviously you read the Zelda dungeon guide that told you that, but that's 100% wrong. Sure it "can be" a solution. The real way to do that part is to drop in to the room on the right and touch one of those stars on the ground. They will shift the holes in the dungeons and have done so since the 3rd one in the light world.

I have completed Legend of Zelda A Link To The Past, and there's also an official Nintendo Power Player's Guide! I still respect your opinion on and your qualms with the game. Great video

I feel you. I started to lose some nostalgia for the Playstation Generation (1995 - 2000). And I was all in. Magazines, game demos, tons of games, the good and the crappy. But now I look at my collection of PS games and that's pretty much what it is. A neat collection of games I never play again since I moved on to better days, better games. And even with my pixel grafix googles on I also feel less interested playing those old classics from the NES days etc. Peoples preferences and nostalgia favorites don't matter much for me. See them lose their mind when I admit not to love Ocarina of Time.

Zelda: A Link to the Past is one of my favorite SNES games, but that is purely for nostalgia. These games just hit different at the time of release and I was able to beat the game without using a walkthrough because, well, we didn't have internet. I was also a kid with ample time to figure it out, I would likely struggle if I went back to it today.

Couldn't seem to edit my post anymore. Agree on almost every game in your video. Phantasy Star is a game I really like though. What you said about Advance Wars is exactly what I feel about it too. Your alternative selections are indeed much better.

I don't think that I've ever had much trouble finding my way through A Link to the Past. If anything, my biggest complaint about the game is that it is often too linear and straightforward. But it's still one of my favorite games in the series along with BotW, MM, OoT, and WW.
