ah! Jamie! when you talked about choosing between an artistic path and a marine biology one that spoke to me so much! I originally did study marine biology for two years and then had a total identity crisis about it that involved moving back home and taking a year off of uni. I'm now studying English with a focus on creative writing and I'm just really glad that I'm not the only person who experienced a crisis of fish faith. What your teacher said about marine biology being something you can come back to is exactly how I think about it now; the ocean will always be there for you! anyway, I really loved this video, I enjoy all of them in truth, it brings me so much joy to see your artistic process because you inspire me as an artist. and as a person, I just think you're neat. toodles!

I think the shorts were a good choice. You apparently didn't have the moment I imagined you might have, tearing up while sketching fish, when a random stranger asks if you're ok, and you respond all sobby, "I just love FISH!" It's cool that your drawing inspired some people, and you met a colleague. I'm a huge wimp drawing around people. It's almost like vlogging in public to me. Of course a lot of the gals in my drawings look like pinups. A few years ago, these gals on the beach sent a dude up to the pier to look at how I was drawing them from overhead. I walked about a mile that day to protect my sketchpad, but enough about me. Nice video!!

Authority took me a while to read until I started the audiobook version of it and then I FLEW through it! while it’s a different pace from Annihilation it is such an interesting exploration of a different part of the world. tbh i recommend reading any Vandermeer via audiobook!!
this is an interesting tip, I'll give it a try! I don't know why, but I'm just not connecting with Control the way I did with the Biologist. Maybe in audiobook format I'll feel differently having it read aloud.

it's kind of lovely how many art people I know who wanted to go into STEM before deciding that they wanted art to be their main thing! I was the same, I did a double degree of arts and science with the thought that I would go into plant biology. Then I found out that making science a career for me would probably make me really unhappy even though I love learning about it, so I *eventually* found my way to an animation degree. I think your love for science really shows in the art you make Jamie, which is really inspiring! also this video may be inspiring me to go to my own local aquarium by myself, or to take myself on art dates alone (even though I have a partner). sometimes there's something nice about being able to take your time and go at your own pace. your videos are always a delight, thank you for providing us with your warm company!

hei, just found out that the aquarium in chicago is really not ethical in its actions towards the animals... i think it's important to acknowledge that aspect, especially if you're passionate about marine life :) i wish the welfare of animals wasnt always an afterthought :(( i liked the video tho!
I literally teared up at the end. That mum and son… ❤ art is so important. I think a lot of people feel the same way about Authority! Personally it’s my favourite of the three, but I get why people don’t like it - it’s pretty different to book one and three! I think you’ll enjoy book 3 a lot more, it goes back to the same kind of vibe as book 1 in a lot of ways. About relationships - as a single woman in my early 30s, I had to come to peace with the fact that I am most definitely NOT doing what society expects of me right now. I don’t want kids so there isn’t anything really pressuring me to settle for someone who isn’t right for me, and I cherish my freedom and independence. If someone thinks I’m a loser (or worse, feels sorry for me) for not having a partner then that just kind of reflects badly on them tbh. I can do whatever I want, anytime I want, and I love doing stuff on my own and on my own terms. Being single is way better than being in a relationship that isn’t working! If I never meet anyone then I’m gonna adopt a million animals and live on a little farm on my own and become that eccentric local lady who’s always giving people fresh eggs from her chickens. I knew so many of those ladies growing up and the older I get the more I think they have it all figured out. Until the next time, take care and I wish only good things for you!

SO, YES, I WAS ENGAGED. He cheated. I was horribly depressed for a year or two. Dated a few people. Then the last person I dated basically said, it'll never work out. And I just told myself, okay I'll die alone. Then one week later ( a guy I'd met in passing twice) was introduced to me by another friend at work and we spoke once. I thought he was rude. My friend said, seriously I think he's just shy, try once more. I did. He said one word (yes) to hanging out and we never stopped talking since. It was odd. Because we both had said no more dating and then less than 1 month later, I found my husband (7 years now).... i am wishing for you such happiness. I too wanted nothing more than just a relationship. I needed it. And finding that, felt great.

This video really resonated with me. Illustration is my passion but over the years I’ve found that I can bring marine biology into it. As a kid I always wanted to be a marine biologist. So now most of my personal work is nonfiction kids work about marine life.
