Useful comment about the birds being very aware of bright white objects thanks! I got a used version of this lens in good quality and it had camo on the hood, now I know why.

Good video, I just got into birding in my backyard with this lens + 1.4 or 2.0 tc attached to my 1DIII and I'm thrilled with the images. I also have a 7D mkII but using the 2.0 tc really slows down af while I don't notice much difference between the 1.4 and 2.0 on the 1DIII. I also have the original push-pull 100-400 f4.5-5.6 IS but have not used it for birding to date but have plans to do so in the spring. Have no plans to go mirrorless so my old dslr's will have to do.

Thanks, no sense in changing until if or when you feel the need. Great images can be made with this setup for sure.

Hi, Just watching this, and noticed your comment about he FPS being lower with this lens. This is probably from the iris for the fstop. Wide open you will probably find no fps drop, but the iris is probably not geared up to open and close fast enough for modern DSLRs.

Yes, I agree, some lenses, I have since read, are not compatible with modern frame rates. I think this might be one of them. I never did email canon, but I suspect this is the case.

I use the same combo ....7dmk2 + 300mm f4 l is it is stated (in fine print) in the manual that the frame rate is dropped from 10 to 6 with this lens when the IS on the lens is ON and the focus on the eos 7dmk2 is on AI SERVO......bummer....if the IS on the lens is turned off you get the 10fps from the camera.....

Although I have a 7DII I'm using the lens with a 1DIII + 1.4 or 2.0 tc in good light and the frame rate remains the same as with no tc as far as I can tell. I'll have to give it a try on the 7DII just to experience the reduced frame rate and do a comparison.

Great video. I had two copies of this lens. The first was a lemon and got replaced. I never enjoyed this lens though and should have bought the 100-400, which was a similar price.

Glad you liked it. The 100-400 II is killer so I hear. Look for a review on that one in the coming months.

Hi Matthew how Ds this lens operate with a mirrorless body like R6. Does it focus as fast as wth a dslr ?

I have not tested it, but it should work using the RF to EF adaptor. Given the age of this lens, I would suspect that it would not operate quite as fast with the RF adaptor, but again, I have not tested it.

I have the Sigma 150-600 C it's a fine lens but I feel in low light the image quality falls of a huge amount. I've been debating this lens coupled with a 1.4 Tele Converter "I have a 5D Mark IV & 77D". On a crop sensor with Tele Converter it becomes an Image Stabilised 672 mm F/5.6 lens!

It is not a perfect lens by any means, but very easy to work around its limitations. The biggest mistake I see people make with this lens is shooting it at 600mm for BIF or in low light. The autofocus works best at 500 and below. It is a slower lens which is why it is only $1,000 dollars instead of $3,000 dollars. I find the limitations minimal and I think some people use poor technique and blame the lens.
