God was seriously concerned with the daily lives of a small tribe of people in the Middle East. It's almost as if these laws weren't written by an omnipresent being but by the priests or Rabbis of the tribe.

its the point in time where people figured out they needed concrete laws but knew that nobody would follow them if its not their "god" who made those rules.
its easy to see how this was entirely done by regular people to create some basic order where there wasnt any but modern christians and muslims will still clame its the word of "god".
realy puts into perspective how dumb people are.

It was framed so that the act of sacrifice your whole life was a gift that God was giving to you so that you could stay in his presence forever. This passage was not at all ever presented in an honest way....that to not sacrifice your freedom was to give up your family. It was not a willing choice made by the "servant". Here are the lyrics:
Pierce my ear, O Lord, my God
Take me to Your door this day.
I will serve no other gods,
      Lord, I’m here to stay.

Yes, I've seen those clips too. Often they'll stop at verse 21:19, the part about paying the injured for lost earnings and time as an example of how 'indentured servants' had equal rights and protection under the law...
Then Matt tells them to read the very next verse, where it spells out that all of it doesn't apply if it's a master beating their slave, they act like it doesn't say what it clearly says and means.

It's just that when you come to the claim that God condones slavery, it doesn't matter what other verses not about slavery say. There is no place in the bible that says, "Don't do it." Not even in the NT.
There is no denying that the Bible condones slavery. All these rules of "here's how to treat your slaves properly" are predicated on the existence of slaves.

Old Testament passages used to confuse my faith as well, until I learned to read through the reality of Jesus:
29 If, however, the bull has had the habit of goring and the owner has been warned but has not kept it penned up and it kills a man or woman, the bull is to be stoned and its owner also is to be put to death.
    - Galatians 5:17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
    - In other words, we all have this desire things that we might know are selfish or wrong, and we don't want to be the "owner" of these actions- we think we should only be held accountable for good deeds and not bad deeds that we caused.
30 However, if payment is demanded, the owner may redeem his life by the payment of whatever is demanded.
-Instead of capital punishment, the injured party can accept a payment. However, God is so good, and human life is so valuable to him, that he will only accept a perfect, innocent life as an offering.
-Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
31 This law also applies if the bull gores a son or daughter.
-Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, and he was gored on the cross. This is a historical event to which most every historian will attest. You can even ask ChatGPT lol :) www.quora.com/Was-the-crucifixion-of-Christ-recognized-by-historians-as-historical
32 If the bull gores a male or female slave, the owner must pay thirty shekels of silver to the master of the slave, and the bull is to be stoned to death.
-Judas was paid 30 shekels of silver for handing Jesus over to the Romans for crucifixion (Matthew 26:15). This fulfilled a prophecy of the Messiah in Zechariah 11:13, written around 500 B.C., also a verifiable date per secular historians en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Sea_Scrolls. [By the way, there are hundreds of other Old Testament predictions of Jesus, ex. Micah 5:2 He will be born in Bethlehem, that we know for certain were written before his life. The chances of him fulfilling just 20 of these predictions (and he fulfilled 300) is the chance of someone finding a the correct nickel in the state of Texas, filled two feet deep with nickels.]
-Philippians 2:7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death-
    even death on a cross!
-Jesus became our servant, and we killed him. Only, this killing was actually a sacrifice that paid for our debt, and "stoned the bull" within us, so that we might be set free from selfish desires and live in the image of God, how he always intended (Check out Colossians 3 for more on that).
I know this sounds overwhelming and like I'm grasping at straws, but we can't call Christianity too simple and then get mad when we see how deep it can go. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I'm sorry if I come across condescending- Jesus Christ came to save sinners, of which I am the worst (1 Timothy 1:15). I know it's not easy wrestling with your faith. Have a great day!

So, your implications that "pleasing the master" meant being a sex toy, instead of a beast of labor, may definitely be mistaken. I'm not convinced. Ask a Semitic historian if you really want to know.
It's not cool, being a slave. But the raping of slaves was kinda an American thing, not ubiquitous or allowed everywhere. You couldn't do just anything you wanted to a slave. Gotta distinguish what culture you are looking at, and what time period. Common mistake.

It also talks about in psalms about the male servant looks to his master and the female servant looks to her mistress. So if it were really true, at least a male servant would serve a man and a female servant a woman. Now that would seem moral, but a man and a woman? @@georgeaguilar6996 This is our time off to recover from the attacks Christians throw at the atheists. I could say the reverse: the fact that you keep coming here and commenting makes me believe that our atheist stance is valid. Why do you comment if you're done and dusted for yourself that theism (and in particular Christ) is true?
Friendly Atheist did a video back in the day explaining why he picks on Christianity.
      th-cam.com/video/ZnJj2BsTKi4/w-d-xo.html
I suggest you watch it yourself. For the comment record: It's because people in the government want to force such religious views on others: they want to build some ten commandments monument on government buildings, they want to abolish abortion rights for women, they wanted to (before the-Merican civil war) use slaves for their plantations. And that's just Christianity in the-Merica.
This series is not for discussing history. It's attacking fundamentalist ideas that some pastors and politicians promulgate, who take such scripture and then re-interpret them for the modern world, out of context. Long ago, Protestants protested and got rid of the Catholic Church from Government. But now some caught the same religious fervour and they themselves are trying to occupy the government with policies based on ancient scripture instead of modern discussions. We have no place for them, and will make no place for them in the government. If people are open to scrutiny, they would quickly see that there's no context for this scripture in the modern world. It was written for a time and place and society that we've long ago grown out of.

in Judaism today if you eat any meat you have to wait 6 hours before you can eat milk based products.
so if you are a Jew you can't eat a cheeseburger despite the fact that it's mostly a veal cooked under probably not it's mother's milk based product.

If there is any light there it was brought there by the Christian missionaries from the West. People like this person should have fought India's religious darkness which put more than a billion in squalor, illiteracy, poverty, witchcraft, ..... .Instead he or his parents chose to leave India for good and settle in America which is the cradle of evangelical Christianity or a nation under God as they declare themselves.
He thought it's better to live among Christians than live among Hindus!
Now he crticises Christianity not Hinduism which made him leave India in the first place. There is no lack for atheist criticizers in America. It's in India they need religious critics. He can do it from America in this modern age but he wouldn't. See the hypocrisy and crookedness.

@@sunplusstars5208 First off, I believe Hemant was born and raised here in the US. He may even be third gen, immigrant. He was a teacher, has been an atheist most, if not all of his life. He has criticized hinduism, but more christianity because it is more of a problem here. Also, if I'm not mistaken, his family were jains, not hindu. Though hindu is the most common religion in India, it is not the only one. Hindu is, though, as far as I've heard, the oldest religion still in common practice. But, it has it's extremists, too, who are just as horrible as those of the abrahamic religions. 🤎🥰✌🌈

I'm 27 and did not grow up in a religious family. I'd probably consider myself agnostic. A few months ago I moved to a new city. My friends' parents & coworkers suggested I join a church to find a good girlfriend & have a community. After one of my dating app matches told me she had herpes after our first date I was think a church girl sounds perfect 👌
Today I went to a young professionals Bible study at a large church my realtor recommended. IT WAS MY FIRST EVER BIBLE STUDY IN MY LIFE!!! First time at this church too. They split us into groups of six and gave each group a chapter of Exodus to analyze. Then we shared our summary with the other groups. Exodus 21 is the first chapter of the Bible I've ever studied...
I was in shock!!! WTF kind of cult did I just walk into!!! Why are we using this? I skipped going to the church service afterwards. That shit was weird!

Christianity claims to be the party of family values mainly because most average Christians haven't read their scriptures for themselves, not all the way through, and not by themselves. When you're only getting carefully curated passages read to you by your pastor or priest, it's easy to only hear the parts about loving thy neighbour, while never hearing the bits about selling your daughters into abusive sexual slavery, or stoning her to death if she refuses to submit to your will.

Verses 12-14 is the murder/manslaughter distinction. It's actually pretty common among ancient law codes. For instance, the pre-Christian Norse had a similar distinction. Premediated murder was punished by execution. Manslaughter (killing in a fit of rage or during a fight) was punished by a big fine or exile. If I remember correctly, some of the big name settlers of Greenland and Iceland were fleeing from a manslaughter charge.
There are some other similarities. It's a reasonable law, but the similarities to other legal codes don't argue for divine authorship.
