From 86’-93’ he was on top for sure, but some people say he started to relax after 94/95 because he already proved himself as a great drummer, but I think he relaxed a bit too much for too long cause cut to 2004 performance of dyers Eve he was rushing and off time a bit, or in the 2015 video of sad but true there were many kinda bad fills. but ever since 2021 he’s been on fire again.
Duesux Machinin yes but Lars is famous now he's a dick for stopping practising he doesn't have the passion anymore but covering something isn't as good as creating something. So what if Josh might be at the moment slightly more technical than Lars, there are loads of underground sweep and insane arpeggio pickers but doesn't mean theyre the best guitarists just cause theyre the most technical. The best drummers and guitarists are people like Lars who have created and preformed insane tracks that 30 years down the line Josh is covering and emulating. That's the reality of it wether Lars sucks now or not
Lars was a beast, and put a lot of effort in his drum lines in the studio. Songs are absolutely awesome. But man, Lars just gave up drumming. He just gave up. Every awesome in his studio tracks are now replaced by a crappy triplet fill that repeats itself over and over. Most double bass was replaced by an alternating beat. Tempo has always been somewhat of a strugle for him, and now it's so much worse. He forgets whole pieces of songs and leaves other band members looking at each other. Nothing wrong with being past his prime. I'm ok with that, it's natural. But I get the feeling the just doesn't like playing anymore. HE doesn't suck, he just quit.
Lars has raw talent that was well tapped into by the band in 1989. But I don't think being the worlds best drummer was ever on his to be list. You need to understand something, in the early 80's he was hanging on the coat tails of Diamond Head in europe as a groupie. He was first and foremost a rock metal fan listener with a lot of connections. Which gets mixed up with and taken for by Music Business savvyness by a lot of people. That was then, these days he's caught up in the yuppy mentality (I'm better than you and too good to show people I'm having fun, because I might look like a fool to someone) everyones afflicted with and he is busy living the life of a rock star. And he's really not too interesting in busting his ass and keeping Battery to tempo and up to speed live, his claim would be he is too old for it. Heck even the band is trying to reduce their tours to 50 shows, a year so see them while you still can. He achieved what he wanted, so be proud of him. If you want drumming thats sick, go listen to Gene Hoglan.
I laugh at the people who like to say Lars is an overrated drummer. He is obviously very skilled, and a pioneer to thrash/metal style drumming. It's not even an argument!
Donovan Kirkpatrick Nowadays Lars Ulrich is not very good live outside of studio. However I do agree that in his prime he was very skilled. Hell, AJFA was his most technical in terms of drumming.
