On October 4, 1954, my 3 lb. 7-month baby was born with an omphalocele. No pink color was in his intestine on the outside of his body. A doctor was flown up from Portland, Oregon to Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle to perform surgery 6 hours after birth. The incision his surgeon made was large enough to put ALL the intestine back into his little body. My baby lived in an incubator for about a month; at a 5 lb. weight he was released from the hospital a month & 5 days after birth. My son was called "the miracle baby" because he survived. He is a very powerful man that came in 3rd place for Mr. Seattle in 1983, and is still a very strong man. Naturally he had no navel, but that little guy felt it was 'special" to have a "zipper" instead of a "belly button" - 1954 statistics re. survival rate for infants born with an omphalocele was one in 10,000.
My baby has a large omphalocele. There is also a third option called "paint and wait" where they just wrap the omphalocele and dress it with anti-biotic ointment for a few months and then once the abdominal cavity has grown a little bigger you wrap the whole abdomen with an ace bandage, which will slowly over the course of about 3 months push the organs back inside, and then you only have one surgery, and the lungs are not compressed. It's much less traumatic and I'm considering it for my baby.
I'm a 45 year old omphalocele survivor. I was born vaginally and my condition was not known beforehand. I went on to have my own child which brought many other conditions but I wouldn't have it any other way.
How long has this procedure for Giant omphaloceles been used? My nephew died; his doctor states there was nowhere to "put" the organs back in. His sac was treated with mercurichrome and consequently he got mercury poisoning which caused his kidneys to shut down and he didn't make it. That was 20 years ago.
