Hi I’m one of the community testers for this update. This is a bit odd. Normally on right click on a target you can just order the weapons to fire and the ship will shoot at the enemy, adjusting based on if you set heading or not.
I’m not sure why you’re getting the position fire on right click of an enemy warship. Are you sure you’re right clicking exactly on the enemy track?

I think you had to click the track, not the ship.

You let the missiles and bombers come up on you in cover. reduced the amount of time and range that your point defense could fire. Stand clear, once you got found, you're not going to sneak up on anyone with that ship.

Maybe manually firing at the carrier track by typing in the track #?

Nah you just have to right click the target (the red diamond)
You could also target position in sensor mode, it is easier to line up

Should just be able to right click on the track. If your radar is off and it’s not in visual range then it might not work.
