This is beyond an exceptional piece of musical art....funny thing on the sidelines...i left my home country merely weeks before this incredible show closed its curtains. The point is....this show helped me find my own strength....and so much more.❤❤❤❤

The value of music is constrained by the amount of masterpieces of the earliest date scientists can learn in their spare time.

Haydn's string quartets are so sonorous I can't get enough of them!

The opening allegro is fantastic music not only to listen to, but also to study. Haydn's weaving of themes and his modulations are genius here, and it takes some time and attention to notice everything he does in this movement.
A cute minuet/trio follows that immediately shows some fun writing when the cello begins it playing its bouncy fifths and creates a kind of duple meter effect.
Starting off the Andante with only the first violin and cello provides a refreshing and sweet atmosphere, and allows for such a sublime moment when the other two instruments subtly enter the music at 13:04. This movement alone would still make this quartet one of my favorites.
Very cute moment at 26:18 before the coda of the finale where the first violin and the cello have a little dialogue; using the huge range of a string quartet's instruments for some fun.

      Some interesting thoughts.
The only thing I’d perhaps suggest is that the ‘cute’ Minuet and Trio is in fact nothing of the sort; like the similarly so-called, mis-labelled ‘Menuetto’ in Beethoven’s Symphony 1, it is a genuine (Beethovenian) one-in-a-bar scherzo.

The Andante (11:49) is played correctly here in my humble opinion. I first heard this on a very old record my stepdad played for me and I don't remember the quartet who did it and it was slow like this as well. I've heard that a lot of players think Haydn was too happy and/or simplistic and feel like it leads to people playing this part way too fast. Almost every other version I can find on youtube is a hearty 20+ BPMs faster. This part played slowly has an immense depth and tragedy to it. This is one of my favorite pieces of music. And yes, there is also simplicity and happiness to it, but it's marked by a slow breath, beneath the march-like roll of the main melody, the counterpoint and harmony breaths slowly, like last breaths under a cloudy sky. Fitting that this was his last completed quartet. Haydn was a genius of the highest order.

That perception of him leads people to play a great deal of his works too fast. Particularly his keyboard sonatas (those have the added problem of pianists trying to showcase virtuosity).

I always felt that the two Op. 77 quartets plus the unfinished op. 103 represented the culmination of Haydn's achievement in the form and reach a height breached only by a very few masters. I wish they were better known. The violist in my string quartet thought Haydn's last set was op. 76 and he's been playing for 20 years.

Derek Suszko I agree. Haydn doesn't get any better than these last 3 quartets. As well as being a big fan of the Opp 1 & 2 sets and Op 76 No 4 I also love these.
I've even read once some expert (I've forgotten who) saying these last quartets represent a _sad falling off_ from his earlier achievements.
Probably some expert trotting out some other expert's opinion. You know how experts are!

Op. 77 was, in my opinion, the last devine muse bestowed upon Haydn. As a heavenly gift for him for composing his oratorios. And Haydn did not waste this last gift.

      ROBERT FRANK GILL
There is no falling off whatsoever.
When Haydn felt that he no longer had the strength to compose anything further, he simply stopped.
      Disregard your ‘expert’.

      Opus 77 is great!
Classical radio stations usually play opus76, and neglect 71, 74, and 77.

The playing here is contained but sensitive. I particularly enjoyed the Andante with its slowly unfolding narrative. A fine performance.

All the other versions I can find on youtube are played much too fast. The andante played slowly is quite memorable and has a gravity and tragedy to it beneath its seemingly light theme.

By this stage of his career, a string quartet by Haydn might begin and end in a key such as F major, but that could well be about it.
