Those old 2 stroke Evinrude and Johnson outboards were extremely reliable and used very little fuel. I think you should check it over and see about getting it running again. I, for one, would be very interested in the process and video.

Enjoyed this video, we're a lot a like in our curiosity towards getting stuff , hopefully cheap and running, I've bought a couple motors here and there, my last was a '77 Evinrude 6 hp I picked up for '75 bucks off Marketplace, did the precursory checks, spark, fuel and compression, turns out all was good, and with some carb cleaning, I had it running, had a weak water and fuel pump, sourced those parts, cheap , on Amazon, after using it a couple times on my 12 foot boat, I decided I wanted a 4 stroke cleaner outboard, I flipped it for a decent profit, and bought a 5 hp Briggs and Stratton, Air cooled 4 stroke engine, which I'm very happy with. I think your should do a compression test first. This will give you a good idea of how worn out the engine is. If it has good compression and you do everything you plan to do, that motor should start really easy and be extremely reliable. You might not need to reseal the gear case if the gear lube is not milky. If you replace the points I would recommend avoiding the BRP/OEM points because I’ve heard they recently have been mostly defective out the box, so I would go with Sierra points instead.
I just picked up a 3hp and 2hp evinrude and johnson for free. I love working on these and restore them. They are perfect for inflatable rafts and small boats for trolling.
Well, these things do bring big money, don't know why, but they do. The first thing to consider is whether or not this was used in salt water. If it was, you will need to be very careful trying to remove fasteners, don't want to snap them off. Next, you might want to do a compression test and drain the gear lube. If the compression is OK 80-100PSI and no water is evident in the gearcase, you can go further. The paint is not discolored on the powerhead, so it doesn't appear overheated. But, someone could have run it without oil, but this should show up on the compression test. Next, decide if you are going to keep it, or sell it. Spending another 100+ dollars on a 175 initial investment doesn't leave much room for profit. So, I would simply clean up the mag plate and clean/reset the points, this is usually all it takes to get good spark. Yes, pull the carb bowl off and have a look. I wouldn't do much with the carb if it looks clean inside, just put it back together. Fuel line is cheap, so it is always a good idea to replace that. Now, refill the gearcase with lube, maybe a new spark plug, add 50:1 mix, put it in a barrel full of water and I'll bet it will probably start and run fine. Now, if you plan to keep it, that is another story. Keep in mind that you can't find a simple, light weight two stroke like this anymore. It is simple and fairly rugged, reliable, and easy to service. So, I would go ahead and do more to it to ensure it will provide reliable daily service for you. If the gear lube is clean, I would go ahead and pull the gearcase down and replace the water pump impeller. This is a strange water pump and there are two kits available. It is a good idea to spend the extra bucks for the better kit with the SS impeller housing liner. These gearcases rarely leak water, but I would definitely pull the propeller off and make sure there is no fish line back there which could get into the prop shaft seal. If all looks OK, I would not mess with any seals. Go ahead and install the ignition kit and replace that funky plug wire. And yes, pull the carb off and install the latest style carb kit that includes a new float and ethanol resistant gaskets/orings. Like I say, these are great little engines and worth the investment for yourself provided it is in decent mechanical condition to begin with. If you are not familiar with doing this work, or afraid of snapping off corroded/rusted hardware (salt water), then I would simply resell it with a price tag of $200.
I just received one of these motors today and it doesn't run. I am most certainly going to get it running because 1- I don't know much about engines and I'd like to lean and 2- I still won't have to pay almost $1,000 for a new motor, 3- everyone in your comments seems to be pretty sure about its reliability. I think this will be a fun learning experience.
I have that motor, and just like you I undid that screw and the cover didn't come off, but when i figured out how to get the cover off blang there went the spring. You will need a gear puller. the points are under the flywheel the timing mark is on the wheel I believe it's 20 deg. I would start at the top points, plug etc get it started first then work down if needed
Mine is a little older and I’m trying to get it to get spark, I’m sure it will run with new points and condenser. I’d get yours running and use it are build beautifully, and look so cool. This one I have look’s more weathered than yours but less used. The rope looks near new and original. I trust to get it going and to use longer than I live. When I pull the rope it feels great and the water is flowing strong in the pail just pulling it without it running.
Wayne, I have watched every single one of your videos and I look forward to Friday to see what you've got going on! Like many have said, if that motor has good compression, then get it running. You can and will learn a lot tinkering with those. You can't beat those old Evinrude and Johnson 2 strokes. I have a 25HP Evinrude on my boat and they're very easy and fun to work on. Sometimes you need to look beyond the dollars and cents and think about the fun you will have and what you will learn tinkering with that old motor. BTW, I may have missed it, but did you say what year it was?
As long as parts are available and legal useable, these little motors are much lighter and easier to work on vs. Four strokes. If compression is good keep it, get it going, or sell it to someone that appreciates vintage motors.
I fix a alot of small engines so here is what I would do to keep cost down. I would first buy a spark plug because that one is gone but only after trying to clean the old one with a spark plug cleaning tool I own to test that the engine will even run. Then I would carefully take the carb apart and clean it out while trying to save the old gaskets, I have some bulk gasket material if I need to make one with a razor and holepunch set. I would replace the fuel line with bulk small engine fuel line that I have from other repairs and it would get a new impeller. This would keep cost down and make it economical to fix. Start accumulating this bulk stuff to keep your cost down across multiple engines.
It,s power for your boat, not a comidaty, to be bought and sold. If you need a good motor for your boat fix it. It,s way better than the lawnmower engines on a stick they have today. If your looking to get rich from fixing it, no, it,s not worth fixing. Knowledge is power, keep that in mind.
Just ran across this video again and as you know I restore these old motors. My thought on saving these are they are mostly metal especially the older ones. They a very simple to work on and a great motor for lake trolling. Anything older is worth saving and reselling to folks who want them but don't know how or don't want to work on them. Mainly because they don't have the time unlike us retired folks.
I saw the video. I picked up an 1965 3hp Evinrude a year or two ago that the water jacket passages were totally clogged up. Got them all clean but still doesn't run right? I put it aside to work on other projects but plan or getting back on it someday.
This old retired guy has just been tasked with assessing 3 outboards, 4hp Mercury, 4hp Johnson & a Seagull. A trip down memory lane as I was the engineer in a boatyard in Lymington early 70’s. My concern is getting spares for the Johnson, could be 1985-91 era. Mercury now running, Seagull probably a museum piece!
I just bought one identical to this yesterday. It starts every pull, but only runs for a second or two. The fuel tank was empty, clean and dry. I put fresh fuel/mix is in it. The vent cap was an open. I tried full choke, 3/4 choke, half choke, 1/4 choke, no choke. I’m gonna replace the spark plug tomorrow and try it again. I’ll look for the easy obvious stuff first. You should fix your’s up and keep it.
Give her a compression test them see if she got spark you can use a drill to spin the motor over to do compression and spark if it has no spark clean points and make sure they are at correct gap should be 0.20 check gear lube and eventually drop lower, those kinds of motors are the best because you don't have to pull the power head because there is no shift shaft to unhook if gear lube is clean you could probably skip rebuild on lower just change gear lube once you get it running invest in impeller you might also be able to just clean the carb instead of rebuilding it. Love the content rock on🤙
Worth saving!! I have two of them.they are small lite.if one it two slow I put on the 2nd. Lol twin outboard on my inflatable.so much better then paddling.or lugging around a 50-75 lb motor and gas tank. Good luck. Very easy to work on.if u don’t like it I’ll take it
@@WayneTheBoatGuy I would hang it on the wall. I have a old 7.5HP Mercury 2 stroke that was giving to me. Has good compression but doesn't run and most all lakes in my area don't allow 2 stroke. So I'll give a good cleaning, paint and hang in my fish cave.

Electronic injection two-stroke because these engines aren’t as efficient as 4 stroke. There is no ban on two-stroke boat motors in California. Although most lakes do not allow the use of high-emission two-stroke motors, that’s not what the state law says. Especially in saltwater lakes and rivers, there are no restrictions on such engines. We only fish freshwater lakes and occasionally the river. I also have a Merc. 35hp 2 stroke wall hanger. And that one runs.
If you see this comment.. I bought a BRAND NEW 1976 never been used 7 hp Montgomery Ward sea king. It's beautiful! The guy said the box fell apart but it still has the plastic and a tag hanging by the choke that gives all the info about it. I inspected it and bore scoped it and I think I'm the first one to have the plug out of it. I had to buy it but I really can't decide whether I want to use it or not! I was going to have it clear coated to protect it but not sure thats a good idea..Im planning on doing a video on it. I was going to show starting it for the first time but I'm like, "do I really want to do thaaaat"😬 Anyway. Just thought I'd tell the story here..😁
I have a 1971 2hp Evinrude Mate and after cleaning out the very gunked up gas tank, all I had to do was replace the old (cork?) float in the carb and get a new spark plug. I also got the motor for $60 and those parts cost less than $40. So I'm happy. As far as your motor goes, why replace things you may not need? Does it have spark? If so, will a little starting fluid/spay get it to start briefly? Check that fuel flows from the gas tank also. If someone allowed the fuel (with oil) to evaporate over several seasons, then your tank may need a serious cleaning - including the outlet screen/filter. My motor's carb float was old and didn't like to "float" so I replaced that with a new version. Replacing that and the spark plug had things working very nicely (once the gunked up fuel tank was cleaned up).
You must be in Michigan, the pic of the Johnson 2hp at 2:45 is literally the exact motor I have! I bought it off marketplace for $250 but I recognized that pic from the ad!
my buddy scraps and he had this at his house for a bit I finally got him to let me have it and I. actually rebuilding it I right now super easy to work on not much to it my goal is to get it running for little to nothing good video though

If you have the time and tools, try to get it running. It’s not a big financial investment, and, regardless of whether you actually get it running, you may learn a few more things about how small outboards are assembled and run than you knew before you worked on it.
Assuming you can do the work yourself. Those old 2 strokes can be a great investment. At $175 non running that is a deal to run away from. And yes the price of the new ones vs an old one i think is a joke. But having owned about 10 vintage OMC outboards and buying a brand new tohatsu, i feel confident that the old 2 strokes will still be running when that tohatsu is in a scrap yard
The issue with an old outboard is that you don't know it's history. Was that motor used for 1000 hours somewhere? Did someone put straight fuel in it at any time? The main thing is does it have compression? A tester is best, but if you have the plug in it and it gives a nice pop-pop-pop with some resistance, it is probably OK. A cheap bore-scope from eBay to check the cylinder wall is a good thing to have around small engines as well. I bought an identical motor a couple years back from a local buy-sell site for 50 or 75 dollars. Someone previous to me had a mixture of metric and SAE bolts in it, and various other janky fixes. Several hours of work, and a few parts later (about $50) I finally had it sputtering in a barrel in my back yard. That's where my story ends. My neighbour had been watching me work on it for a couple of days, and when he heard it fire he walked over and offered me more than it was worth to me, as I already had several small motors. That's the thing about these old motors, the value is different to different people. I saw it as a cool old motor that I was willing to put a small amount of money into and run once or twice a year just for fun. My neighbour saw it as a perfect lightweight motor to put on his canoe. If I had to guess, if he takes good care of it, that motor will be good for another 50 years. My recommendation to you is to fix it for yourself, or get it to someone who will fix it and use it. It's too useful of a motor to be a wall hanger. Unless, of course it is worn out.
Wayne the law out here in the west is a lot of the lakes are outlawing them because of the gas and oil thats left on the water, The 4 stroke is a lot cleaner, If you get caught with a 2 stroke the fine is quite hefty, For the price of the fine , would pay for half of a new 4 stroke outboard.
there good here in minnesota and we got 17000 lakes/ wisc too never trust a tree hugger or wind mill to power a boat! two strokes are still made today! love all of mine fines? yah

Wayne I need some advice. I just purchased a 14 foot StarCraft. I now need a motor . The guy I purchased the boat from has a 1984 Johnson 25 hp. Motor. He was not selling the motor with the boat. He was going keep the motor. He said it was a awesome motor and did not want to sell it. I asked what it would be to change his mind. He finally said ok! If you want 7:42 it 800.00 not a penny less. Now I know someone 7:54 that has a almost new Mercury 6 HP. It only has about 5 hours on it. I don’t have to go fast. I am A older man and just want to get to where the fish are. I have had a few friends tell me don’t buy the Mercury it’s to small. Other friends have said don’t buy the Johnson it’s to old and they are not in business anymore. They are both the exact same price. Can you tell me your opinion?
If the Mercury is a 4 stroke, it will be easier to fuel up (no mixing gas and oil), lighter to carry, less weight on the boat, and easier to deal with because it's newer and probably made by Tohatsu. But it will be slower - and unless you're in a competition, or needing to get somewhere quickly - that might be fine. I'm putting a 6 hp on my 14 foot boat this spring - so I will have more feedback when I do!
Howdy from Sugarland Texas. I have a 90SPL Pre mix. I noticed that I am getting 2-Stroke oil residue all over the inside of engine cover and engine. However the engine runs great and never fouls plugs. What could be the problem ? Is this a sign that its time for a rebuild ? Even though it runs great.
Wayne, you might want to sell it "as is"... I think Maryland just changed the law such that you need to have a safety lanyard in order to use a small outboard. It may not apply to old outboards. But, I am not sure..
The law was nationwide and I think because of it's age it's exempt and because it's below 3 hp But good thinking - lot's of times we forget stuff like this!
Nice ! A smart guy could place a variety of different power-heads on that drive train. A compact gas-powered engine, like for a large weed whacker could be adapted for an air cooled 2 cycle outboard application. Battery lawn mower engines might work as well. 🤔 Now where's that old chain saw ? 🙂
@@WayneTheBoatGuy You have options and there will be more. The transmission/lower unit could be driven by anything. My trolling batteries will deliver 25 amps each for 175 minutes. That could be 2 50lb thrust min-kota's or just use your imagination ? 100lbs of thrust will push my drift boat up river. I watch one do it with a single 70lb electric motor and a 9.8 for back-up. Tripple screw is possible - 2 electric with gas in the middle on some boats. It's the hull that matters Repowering is like changing tires to me. Enjoy your posts and this discussion. Hello ! One thought in regard to that engine in my area of British Columbia,Canada.There are some lakes where gas is not allowed and you use an electric only or row. CHEERS
Yes, you are over 300, but, those engines you buy will probably need a water pump, likely need fuel hoses, and my need a carb kit. So really, it's not that bad, and you know they are now good. Often times the points and condensers are not bad. Check the condensers with a multi meter and as long as the points are not pitted badly, it should be fine. I picked up a 6 hp evinrude for 100 dollars. Didn't run but the guy had put all new fuel lines, water pump, the whole thing but couldnt get it to run. Points where good but had some corrosion and wouldn't make good contact. Rubbed it with emery cloth and it's been a champ since. I'd say go for it!
I would fix it, WTBG. Why? Because one gains knowledge and skill through experience. Even if you sell it at a loss, you have to add the value gained via going through the process. These motors are made by different companies, but mechanically they are similar in construction and function; "The more you know..." [shooting star animation] The other reason to fix it--from a guy perspective--is probably the most important: it presents an opportunity to add tools to your collection!
If you are handy and can do the repairs yourself it might be worth the effort and you at least have a spare motor to take along on long days on the water. But if you have to hire a mechanic to rebuild the engine its definitely not worth it. These small engines are designed as "throwaways" to be used until they peter out and then get a new one. But if you run it properly and maintain it correctly a small engine should give you good service for quite awhile.
I think you should sell it to me for a reasonable price (what you paid) and I will run it. I have five of these and love them, but they do need repair due to age.
Hello Wayne , I think the advise is IF ONLY , if only things were different , like when you can get a hold of your local school district ,and ask if they have a high school class the repairs mechanisms like car engines. Body work for cars and such. Years ago they would do the work for you.,the students would learn and they would charge you for the parts. or if you I u supplied the parts they would use your idem for class purposes. If only things were the same as when things were simple......If only...
So you own it , now you say you need all those things to replace on it but have you put gas in it and tried to run it ? 1st thing pull the spark plug if it turns over it’s not froze up , run a compression test , if it’s in good standards spray some mixed two stroke gas in the hole and replace the plug , set it in your test water tub and see if it will start , check and see if it’s got spark , ? Compression-spark-fuel are needed to get it running , if it starts do you really need to buy all the new stuff you said , maybe a new plug , if it starts and is pissing water your in luck you can still open the water pump systemic to inspect the impeller if it’s ok just lube it up and reinstall it , the points can be cleaned and adjusted , the ting with a lot of the micro motors is they weren’t used a lot , the week end fishermen used it a half dozen times , and a lot got thrown in the corner of the garage , if the fisherman got serious he bought a bigger motor and the small one sat for years with not many hours on them , I would just try to see if you could get it going first them worry about replacing old and worn parts later , new plug , clean the carb and fuel system, make sure it’s got spark and let her rip ! 😳

I had two of these and they are terrible motors. Hard to start, unreliable and 1 clamp is not enough. One of them came off the dinghy. I see you discovered the spring start screw trap! We had springs and cords breaking a lot because you had to pull the darn things so many times trying to get them to start! If it was an old Yamaha it would be worth fixing.

yes its worth it I use for kicker and has got me back to the ramp a couple of times when my 15hp broke

Mine is a little older and I’m trying to get it to get spark, I’m sure it will run with new points and condenser. I’d get yours running and use it are build beautifully, and look so cool. This one I have look’s more weathered than yours but less used. The rope looks near new and original. I trust to get it going and to use longer than I live. When I pull the rope it feels great and the water is flowing strong in the pail just pulling it without it running.
Wayne, I have watched every single one of your videos and I look forward to Friday to see what you've got going on! Like many have said, if that motor has good compression, then get it running. You can and will learn a lot tinkering with those. You can't beat those old Evinrude and Johnson 2 strokes. I have a 25HP Evinrude on my boat and they're very easy and fun to work on. Sometimes you need to look beyond the dollars and cents and think about the fun you will have and what you will learn tinkering with that old motor. BTW, I may have missed it, but did you say what year it was?

As long as parts are available and legal useable, these little motors are much lighter and easier to work on vs. Four strokes. If compression is good keep it, get it going, or sell it to someone that appreciates vintage motors.
I fix a alot of small engines so here is what I would do to keep cost down. I would first buy a spark plug because that one is gone but only after trying to clean the old one with a spark plug cleaning tool I own to test that the engine will even run. Then I would carefully take the carb apart and clean it out while trying to save the old gaskets, I have some bulk gasket material if I need to make one with a razor and holepunch set. I would replace the fuel line with bulk small engine fuel line that I have from other repairs and it would get a new impeller. This would keep cost down and make it economical to fix. Start accumulating this bulk stuff to keep your cost down across multiple engines.
It,s power for your boat, not a comidaty, to be bought and sold. If you need a good motor for your boat fix it. It,s way better than the lawnmower engines on a stick they have today. If your looking to get rich from fixing it, no, it,s not worth fixing. Knowledge is power, keep that in mind.

Just ran across this video again and as you know I restore these old motors. My thought on saving these are they are mostly metal especially the older ones. They a very simple to work on and a great motor for lake trolling. Anything older is worth saving and reselling to folks who want them but don't know how or don't want to work on them. Mainly because they don't have the time unlike us retired folks.
I ended up giving this one to @BrandonsGarage and it actually was in worse shape than we both originally thought.
I saw the video. I picked up an 1965 3hp Evinrude a year or two ago that the water jacket passages were totally clogged up. Got them all clean but still doesn't run right? I put it aside to work on other projects but plan or getting back on it someday.
This old retired guy has just been tasked with assessing 3 outboards, 4hp Mercury, 4hp Johnson & a Seagull. A trip down memory lane as I was the engineer in a boatyard in Lymington early 70’s. My concern is getting spares for the Johnson, could be 1985-91 era. Mercury now running, Seagull probably a museum piece!
I just bought one identical to this yesterday. It starts every pull, but only runs for a second or two. The fuel tank was empty, clean and dry. I put fresh fuel/mix is in it. The vent cap was an open. I tried full choke, 3/4 choke, half choke, 1/4 choke, no choke. I’m gonna replace the spark plug tomorrow and try it again. I’ll look for the easy obvious stuff first. You should fix your’s up and keep it.

Give her a compression test them see if she got spark you can use a drill to spin the motor over to do compression and spark if it has no spark clean points and make sure they are at correct gap should be 0.20 check gear lube and eventually drop lower, those kinds of motors are the best because you don't have to pull the power head because there is no shift shaft to unhook if gear lube is clean you could probably skip rebuild on lower just change gear lube once you get it running invest in impeller you might also be able to just clean the carb instead of rebuilding it. Love the content rock on🤙
Great motor-I bought mine for $75 dollars not running. Not much to get it running. I use it with my Bass Prowler.
Worth saving!! I have two of them.they are small lite.if one it two slow I put on the 2nd. Lol twin outboard on my inflatable.so much better then paddling.or lugging around a 50-75 lb motor and gas tank. Good luck. Very easy to work on.if u don’t like it I’ll take it

@@WayneTheBoatGuy I would hang it on the wall. I have a old 7.5HP Mercury 2 stroke that was giving to me. Has good compression but doesn't run and most all lakes in my area don't allow 2 stroke. So I'll give a good cleaning, paint and hang in my fish cave.

Electronic injection two-stroke because these engines aren’t as efficient as 4 stroke. There is no ban on two-stroke boat motors in California. Although most lakes do not allow the use of high-emission two-stroke motors, that’s not what the state law says. Especially in saltwater lakes and rivers, there are no restrictions on such engines. We only fish freshwater lakes and occasionally the river. I also have a Merc. 35hp 2 stroke wall hanger. And that one runs.

If you see this comment.. I bought a BRAND NEW 1976 never been used 7 hp Montgomery Ward sea king. It's beautiful! The guy said the box fell apart but it still has the plastic and a tag hanging by the choke that gives all the info about it. I inspected it and bore scoped it and I think I'm the first one to have the plug out of it. I had to buy it but I really can't decide whether I want to use it or not! I was going to have it clear coated to protect it but not sure thats a good idea..Im planning on doing a video on it. I was going to show starting it for the first time but I'm like, "do I really want to do thaaaat"😬 Anyway. Just thought I'd tell the story here..😁
That's cool! If you do want to preserve it, rather than clear coat, maybe just a good wax to keep it from oxidizing.

I have a 1971 2hp Evinrude Mate and after cleaning out the very gunked up gas tank, all I had to do was replace the old (cork?) float in the carb and get a new spark plug. I also got the motor for $60 and those parts cost less than $40. So I'm happy. As far as your motor goes, why replace things you may not need? Does it have spark? If so, will a little starting fluid/spay get it to start briefly? Check that fuel flows from the gas tank also. If someone allowed the fuel (with oil) to evaporate over several seasons, then your tank may need a serious cleaning - including the outlet screen/filter. My motor's carb float was old and didn't like to "float" so I replaced that with a new version. Replacing that and the spark plug had things working very nicely (once the gunked up fuel tank was cleaned up).
That's so cool that yours came back for under $100 total! Unfortunately, this one had a much rougher journey!

If you have the time and tools, try to get it running. It’s not a big financial investment, and, regardless of whether you actually get it running, you may learn a few more things about how small outboards are assembled and run than you knew before you worked on it.
Assuming you can do the work yourself. Those old 2 strokes can be a great investment. At $175 non running that is a deal to run away from. And yes the price of the new ones vs an old one i think is a joke. But having owned about 10 vintage OMC outboards and buying a brand new tohatsu, i feel confident that the old 2 strokes will still be running when that tohatsu is in a scrap yard
The issue with an old outboard is that you don't know it's history. Was that motor used for 1000 hours somewhere? Did someone put straight fuel in it at any time? The main thing is does it have compression? A tester is best, but if you have the plug in it and it gives a nice pop-pop-pop with some resistance, it is probably OK. A cheap bore-scope from eBay to check the cylinder wall is a good thing to have around small engines as well.
I bought an identical motor a couple years back from a local buy-sell site for 50 or 75 dollars. Someone previous to me had a mixture of metric and SAE bolts in it, and various other janky fixes.
Several hours of work, and a few parts later (about $50) I finally had it sputtering in a barrel in my back yard.
That's where my story ends. My neighbour had been watching me work on it for a couple of days, and when he heard it fire he walked over and offered me more than it was worth to me, as I already had several small motors.
That's the thing about these old motors, the value is different to different people.
I saw it as a cool old motor that I was willing to put a small amount of money into and run once or twice a year just for fun. My neighbour saw it as a perfect lightweight motor to put on his canoe. If I had to guess, if he takes good care of it, that motor will be good for another 50 years.
My recommendation to you is to fix it for yourself, or get it to someone who will fix it and use it. It's too useful of a motor to be a wall hanger. Unless, of course it is worn out.

Wayne the law out here in the west is a lot of the lakes are outlawing them because of the gas and oil thats left on the water, The 4 stroke is a lot cleaner, If you get caught with a 2 stroke the fine is quite hefty, For the price of the fine , would pay for half of a new 4 stroke outboard.

Wayne I need some advice. I just purchased a 14 foot StarCraft. I now need a motor . The guy I purchased the boat from has a 1984 Johnson 25 hp. Motor. He was not selling the motor with the boat. He was going keep the motor. He said it was a awesome motor and did not want to sell it. I asked what it would be to change his mind. He finally said ok! If you want 7:42 it 800.00 not a penny less. Now I know someone 7:54 that has a almost new Mercury 6 HP. It only has about 5 hours on it. I don’t have to go fast. I am A older man and just want to get to where the fish are. I have had a few friends tell me don’t buy the Mercury it’s to small. Other friends have said don’t buy the Johnson it’s to old and they are not in business anymore. They are both the exact same price. Can you tell me your opinion?
If the Mercury is a 4 stroke, it will be easier to fuel up (no mixing gas and oil), lighter to carry, less weight on the boat, and easier to deal with because it's newer and probably made by Tohatsu. But it will be slower - and unless you're in a competition, or needing to get somewhere quickly - that might be fine. I'm putting a 6 hp on my 14 foot boat this spring - so I will have more feedback when I do!

Howdy from Sugarland Texas. I have a 90SPL Pre mix. I noticed that I am getting 2-Stroke oil residue all over the inside of engine cover and engine. However the engine runs great and never fouls plugs. What could be the problem ? Is this a sign that its time for a rebuild ? Even though it runs great.
perhaps a fuel leak? or something with the carb boot? i dont know much about outboards so im just making random guesses

Wayne, you might want to sell it "as is"... I think Maryland just changed the law such that you need to have a safety lanyard in order to use a small outboard. It may not apply to old outboards. But, I am not sure..
The law was nationwide and I think because of it's age it's exempt and because it's below 3 hp
But good thinking - lot's of times we forget stuff like this!

Nice ! A smart guy could place a variety of different power-heads on that drive train. A compact gas-powered engine, like for a large weed whacker could be adapted for an air cooled 2 cycle outboard application. Battery lawn mower engines might work as well. 🤔 Now where's that old chain saw ? 🙂
BTW that cowling alone is worth a few bucks. Try and find one 😂

@@WayneTheBoatGuy You have options and there will be more. The transmission/lower unit could be driven by anything. My trolling batteries will deliver 25 amps each for 175 minutes.
That could be 2 50lb thrust min-kota's or just use your imagination ? 100lbs of thrust will push my drift boat up river. I watch one do it with a single 70lb electric motor and a 9.8 for back-up. Tripple screw is possible - 2 electric with gas in the middle on some boats. It's the hull that matters Repowering is like changing tires to me.

If i needed it, I'd fix it myself (I like to tinker on that kinda stuff) but If I did not need it, I'd sell it cheap.

Yes, you are over 300, but, those engines you buy will probably need a water pump, likely need fuel hoses, and my need a carb kit. So really, it's not that bad, and you know they are now good. Often times the points and condensers are not bad. Check the condensers with a multi meter and as long as the points are not pitted badly, it should be fine. I picked up a 6 hp evinrude for 100 dollars. Didn't run but the guy had put all new fuel lines, water pump, the whole thing but couldnt get it to run. Points where good but had some corrosion and wouldn't make good contact. Rubbed it with emery cloth and it's been a champ since. I'd say go for it!
Great points (pun intended) - other motors, even if running at time of purchase have unknowns.
A brand new Suzuki four stroke needs nothing but fuel stop kidding yourself.

I would fix it, WTBG. Why? Because one gains knowledge and skill through experience. Even if you sell it at a loss, you have to add the value gained via going through the process. These motors are made by different companies, but mechanically they are similar in construction and function; "The more you know..." [shooting star animation] The other reason to fix it--from a guy perspective--is probably the most important: it presents an opportunity to add tools to your collection!
Can of carb cleaner, wire brush the spark plug, change the gearcase oil. That's probably all it needs.
That's a good way to approach it!
If you are handy and can do the repairs yourself it might be worth the effort and you at least have a spare motor to take along on long days on the water. But if you have to hire a mechanic to rebuild the engine its definitely not worth it. These small engines are designed as "throwaways" to be used until they peter out and then get a new one. But if you run it properly and maintain it correctly a small engine should give you good service for quite awhile.
Or course it's worth saving. I am in Australia and would pay $400 for it

Hello Wayne , I think the advise is IF ONLY , if only things were different , like when you can get a hold of your local school district ,and ask if they have a high school class the repairs mechanisms like car engines. Body work for cars and such. Years ago they would do the work for you.,the students would learn and they would charge you for the parts. or if you I u supplied the parts they would use your idem for class purposes. If only things were the same as when things were simple......If only...
I don't mind playing with this engine - it's just whether or not it's worth the $$.

The easy motor to Work on that i have ever rebuilt. I spent 1900.oo on a Johnson 40Hp at three shops and it still runs like poo.

Does it even have a water pump? Could be air cooled.
I am not sure about this one, but even the air cooled outboards still have a water impeller to cool the exhaust

So you own it , now you say you need all those things to replace on it but have you put gas in it and tried to run it ? 1st thing pull the spark plug if it turns over it’s not froze up , run a compression test , if it’s in good standards spray some mixed two stroke gas in the hole and replace the plug , set it in your test water tub and see if it will start , check and see if it’s got spark , ? Compression-spark-fuel are needed to get it running , if it starts do you really need to buy all the new stuff you said , maybe a new plug , if it starts and is pissing water your in luck you can still open the water pump systemic to inspect the impeller if it’s ok just lube it up and reinstall it , the points can be cleaned and adjusted , the ting with a lot of the micro motors is they weren’t used a lot , the week end fishermen used it a half dozen times , and a lot got thrown in the corner of the garage , if the fisherman got serious he bought a bigger motor and the small one sat for years with not many hours on them , I would just try to see if you could get it going first them worry about replacing old and worn parts later , new plug , clean the carb and fuel system, make sure it’s got spark and let her rip ! 😳
And as far as that motor goes fixed it up get it running and then give it away to someone here in your comment section one of your subscribers...

I had two of these and they are terrible motors. Hard to start, unreliable and 1 clamp is not enough. One of them came off the dinghy. I see you discovered the spring start screw trap! We had springs and cords breaking a lot because you had to pull the darn things so many times trying to get them to start! If it was an old Yamaha it would be worth fixing.
