I'm a 39 year old black man that have never heard of this band. Bored at home last week I watched a documentary about the band and was blew away at how long they have been around. I really like this song and now somewhat a fan of their music.
Marcus Heath Also check out a band called Living Colour & another called The Family Stand, both Black Rock. There's a lot of Living Colour on You Tube, old & new. They're still together & touring and better than ever.
Marcus Heath Also, there was a band called Follow For Now, also the name of their only album. You can find it on Amazon for under a buck. The same energy as Fishbone. Also google Black Rock Coalition
This band was a huge huge HUGE influence on me, as a young black kid who loved hard rock, this was the first band that rocked out good where the members looked like me. back then the only black people you saw in rock music was the occasional drummer or bassist with a white singer and guitarist up front getting all the love.
TheMortalez Yep I used to hear this song all the time on Z-Rock and I loved it, it was months before I knew they were black and after finding out i was even more impressed, it could not have been easy for them to get that much radio play back then, but they were just that fucking good. Sadly I think if they were white or of the vin diesel/jennifer beals variety of black they would have been even more popular. but times are changing thankfully and those things dont matter as much, as evidence by the last time I saw this band in 2009 and the crowd was a bunch of white kids who would have been babies when this video was made.
still gives me goosebumps after all these years... Those harmonies, Norwood's bass playing, Angelo's singing, the heaviness of the guitars, it all blends so niceely and still sounds so fresh today

You are correct. They should’ve been huge. At the time the label had the opportunity to back and promote a highly talented all Black California Rock band. Or, an up and coming all White California Funk/Rock band. They went with the all White band, better known as The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
In the words of the late and great lemmy from motorhead tell them to shove it. I can't stand that shit why should race determine what should or shouldn't be liked by someone?

@@grampagamingguy6833 GAHHH! Curse you for being right yet again. Speaking of Body Count, i just recently watched a video of them doing a cover of Raining Blood by Slayer! It was a beautiful thing to behold.
When I was a kid after the fall of the iron curtain one of my positive first impressions about The West of the west was Fishbones videos on MTV. I didn't understand the lyrics just loved the vibe of the music. I still really like them.
This song from the reality of my surroundings album is awesome. I have to say it’s a shame that Fishbone never really got the attention they deserve from the masses. My favorite album from Fishbone is Truth and Soul is an extraordinary piece of work I can’t think of anything like it an absolute classic in my opinion.

Hands down the best show I ever saw was Fishbone at First Avenue in Minneapolis. Think it was like 1993. The band (especially Angelo) were absolutely at full throttle giving 150% for a good 90 minutes. It was crazy the way they commanded the audience. The pit went from pure chaos to actual dancing just by playing the next song. Then back to pure chaos. There has never been anyone that can touch their live show.
That's right on the button. I saw them at The Santa Monica Civic Center back in 87. They were totally awesome. Like 2 hrs of punk rock reggae sounds mixed with funk n soul. Rock on brothers and sisters.
I wholeheartedly agree. I saw them in a small venue in Australia in the early 90s. I’ve seen a LOT of live music & these guys were full tilt talent & huge energy. I’ll never forget & this track is a favourite of mine. I was lucky to see Living Colour at another small venue too. Blessed to have those memories. ❤
I travelled to New York last year to see George Clinton & P-Funk in Port Chester, and Fishbone supported them. I never heard or seen them at all prior to the show. But when watching them, I was astonished beyond belief! They were so incredible, and I've been a fan ever since! I hope they come back to Australia so I could see them one last time. I also regret not getting a photo with Angelo upon talking to him, because the man's got a heart of gold and is so nice to talk to!
One of the best shows i saw with these guys was in BC Canada. Customs refused one of their horn players into canada. So they got word out and a young clean cut white guy stood in for the show. It was an amazing show and the guy did a fantastic job with literally last minute notice. He didnt miss a beat and Fishbone welcomed him like their own. Truly class these guys are !

This song is not political; it's not racial. The reason this song is great is that it's about depression, plain and simple. We can be depressed for different reasons, but it's part of the universal human condition. *Liked*
Well you made it racial, because i don't see comments on Aerosmith or Nirvana's video having to state: "This song is not racial or political". You just made a "thing" about a black band making a song that isn't about race or politics. But you know they have plenty of songs about those subjects.
Lifelong Fishbone fan here and while I’m nervous about the upcoming changes to the band, I’m optimistic Fishbone will continue to deliver amazing music and amazing live shows.
My older brothers used to listen to this group, they had a VHS tape with a lot of their music videos.. when I was a little girl this video used to scare me because of the children in cages lol but I always liked the song.
That bass, the sound, the thump, and the actual visual stand-up bass in the video, that's what I always loved about this song. The video though, that young kid, standing on a wall playing air guitar, perfect!
Fishbone was always a head of their time! So happy I got to see them a few times in their prime.... Their energy was amazing! Now sharing them with my son who is my age when I seen them.
I had a friend who was the lead singer/lead guitar in a local Dallas band and he said he hung out with Fishbone one night and said that lead singer is crazy in person too, it’s not just an act or something lol. He said they all were cool though and very nice.
Seen them live in Sydney. Never seen such energy in any performance! Absolutely awesome. Great playing and singer is unbelievable, like he's possessed by the music. Incredible to watch.❤😮
I attended High School with these guys.. they were a band back in 1983..The band leader Angelo Moore was an unique dancer. He taught me dance moves that defies Gravity...Great Human to share his skill set. I still dance those moves today in my 50. It won me alot of attention over the decades.. Thanks Angelo

Growing up in the 80’s. This is an anthem. Lyrics are genius. Sadly “Until the truth is seen by each and every eye”. We may never see
I love that the bass isn't "mixed" out of existence with this band. It's prominent in the mix and I love it.
If you see the size of Norwood Fisher you’d understand. 😅

great song
This is a masterpiece.

@@LaurenLawDawg Absolutely!
That bass, the sound, the thump, and the actual visual stand-up bass in the video, that's what I always loved about this song.
The video though, that young kid, standing on a wall playing air guitar, perfect!
Saw them many times in the 90s, absolutely awesome! They never conformed to the 3-4 minute live songs. They would go on for 10 minute tangents.
Epic when shows are crazy tangents
Simply awesome 🔥
Fishbone was always a head of their time! So happy I got to see them a few times in their prime.... Their energy was amazing! Now sharing them with my son who is my age when I seen them.
I had a friend who was the lead singer/lead guitar in a local Dallas band and he said he hung out with Fishbone one night and said that lead singer is crazy in person too, it’s not just an act or something lol. He said they all were cool though and very nice.
Brilliant band and one of THE best live shows I ever saw. Saw them at Lollapalooza and once they opened for Primus.
I saw them in Orlando 1993. It actually rained. They went straight to this song. One of the best moments of my life
Seen them live in Sydney.
Never seen such energy in any performance!
Absolutely awesome.
Great playing and singer is unbelievable, like he's possessed by the music.
Incredible to watch.❤😮
YOU CAN HEAR THE BASS!!!!! YEAH!

I can hardly wait to see you again! 🕊🕯🎈🎆🎏
I saw this band live in 1992. Totally blew my mind. Never had seen anything quite like it until that point. Effing amazing.

This is one the greatest songs ever written.
I am and always be a Fishbone solider.
Kendell doing that fucking awesome guitar solo with the wavy watery sound, Phil going crazy on the drums, man it doesn't get better than this.
My L.A boys!!! 🔥🔥🔥💪🏾💪🏾 Them and Living Color should have made tons of money!!!!

Correct. There's actually a long form home video of the album sessions that he filmed as well.
They had great moments before and after, but this is the PEAK of Fishbone IMO, sheer perfection.
Incredible performances, super high energy, deep meaningful lyrics, thrashing riffs, super catchy beat and rhythm....Fishbone has it ALL.
That is one of the greatest riffs.
GREAT BAND! GREAT MUSICIANS! I saw them in concert. FISHBONE IS A MUSICIAN'S BAND! GO SEE THEM LIVE. ITS A MUST!
This is absolute GOLD..bought "the reality of my surroundings" after seeing this video on MTV !! And heey the rest of the album does not really suck!! Fishbone should have been massive ok!!😁😁💗
21 years later... this song still kicks all kinds of ass !
