"i was straining" man your vocal coordination even when you was younger was far above average, that's why you became so good in 7 years.. when i tried to sing at 13 i was like a screaming goat, no jokes lol.. after 5 years i started to understand how to sing without tension, probably the fact that my idol was kurt cobain and i'm like a bass baritone didn't help XD, but yeah 5 years just to do that.. then of course when you understand how to use the instrument you have just to practice and get better, but you my friend started at a really good point.

there are many videos on youtube where professional singers not only show the right breathing and singing exercises but also how to do them correctly and efficiently. i suggest you go watch them. singing scales with good breath support and opening up your resonators to get that powerful vibrating sound and feeling inside your chest helps out a lot. thats what i initially meant to say. sry in case i misused some words, not my native language
You could always look up techniques on youtube but the main thing is practicing. Don't be shy about it, some people sound terrible at first but it's just them learning how to control their voice. So practice practice practice. Even singing along with your favorite songs is enough if you do it often.

Basically just know when to breathe. You shouldnt breathe after ever 5seconds and to support your breath you need to hold it and expand your ribs rather than raise your shoulders. Also, to hit high notes you need to raise your eyebrows and not stretch your neck.
Support is more of a tonal thing, you're talking more about diaphragmatic breathing and breath control. Good support is easy and shouldn't feel like you're doing extra work. When your voice is supported, you sound fuller, more confident, and more mature. The opposite is true when you have poor support; So really the biggest difference isn't what you're doing, but how you sound.
Really like the fact you educated us on basics throughout the video. Without any training it is hard to tell what to look. But, this video really paves the path for those that are fairly new at singing.

I hope it's not too late to answer. I recently discover that you need to build a micromuscle in your throat through different exercise and breath management. I have gone through it or 2 weeks and I find myself feel comfortable singing a higher note. So the key is know the right way to build a muscle memory and learn to manage how you breathe.
