This is right before he did his brilliant sit-com, The Bob Newhart Show. He' talking about filming the pilot for it. Amazingly, he's still alive 47 years later.
I have nothing against newhart, but he was never that remarkable to me. Cavett was rude with the ashtray, he made a point of clanking it after Newhart dropped the ashes o the carpet.
Bob Newhart was a great comedic figure, with his wonderfully dry humor. And Dick Cavett was one of the most annoying and biggest blowhard assholes of that era. No wonder he only lasted 2 years on ABC.
2021, fifty years later and they're both still with us!
RIP today tho.
3:44 The way he seamlessly shifts from telling the story to being the story is brilliant.
Bob Newhart 1971: "I'm selling out." I sure hope that sitcom pilot works out for him!
Two of my favorite people.
Bob Newhart, a comic genius. A tribute to irony and dry humor.
You'll notice Bob never really hits the punchline, he leaves it to the viewer. Takes a lot of confidence. Genius.
InstaBlaster.

Now it's 52 years later.
my two favorite guys -- Bob Newhart and Dick Cavett
Boy, you must lead a lonely life...lol
I don't think I've ever seen Bob out of character until now.
Watch him and Don Rickles interview. They are quite serious.
Rip Bob Newhart ❤
They’re even sitting the same, it’s like they’re twins
Bob’s giant tie and lapels and from a bygone time
The guest Bob is referring to at the beginning is then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan. (Dec. 17, 1971)
first time I've seen a cigarette in his hand.
7:27 One of the great ironic questions. He of course did two more award winning, very popular TV shows.

94 AÑOS.
He was hilarious in the Big Bang Theory.
These two could be brothers. Such talent. RIP Mr. Newhart.
Bob was a HEAVY, HEAVY SMOKER. Back in the 80s he was rushed to the hospital, and was told to give up the cancer sticks or DIE.
And now he’s in his 90s.
Newhart can still mimic Putin as a grand finale!
In the battle of the milquetoast white guys, the widest necktie wins.
i never knew he smoked.
Funny, I never knew he smoked
He didn’t stop smoking until 1986.
DICK CAVETT
19 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1936
86 AÑOS (87)
Did Bob Smoke New port menthol cigarrette's?
VERY ODD interview.....pre-THE BOB NEWHART SHOW.....
What kind of cigarettes did Bob Newhart smoke?
Newports - alive with pleasure!
7:20 "So that was something that actually happened.”
“Yep.”
Haha. It doesn’t look that funny on paper. Love both these guys.
one swell foop
your comment freaked me out... I heard the same thing... lol
Watching Cavett’s listless interview with Newhart makes me realize more than ever just how great Carson was.
Cavett makes you really appreciate Johnny Carson. And the camera angles suck.
I have nothing against newhart, but he was never that remarkable to me. Cavett was rude with the ashtray, he made a point of clanking it after Newhart dropped the ashes o the carpet.
I want to like Bob…but he’s too dry for myself. Takes me 5 seconds to get the laugh. Thinking about it
