All my friends from design school have made their own wedding dresses. Here’s what I learned: 1) Start now. Start now! 2) Give yourself a deadline of 3 months before the wedding. However long you think it’s going to take you, double that. Planning a wedding itself is a big undertaking and those months before you will be super busy even if you buy a dress. 3). Make a muslin and perfect the fit before cutting into any fabric (which you should always do but home sewers don’t do it) 4) Making your bridesmaids’ dresses is insanity. (Unless they’re slip dresses, but still) Even if you have only one maid, making a custom piece for someone else is an entirely different process than sewing for yourself. Instead, all of you can pick a pattern you like, buy the fabric together and they can pay someone else to make the dresses. The list you made of all the wedding related sewing projects is going to make you lose your mind, lol. Focus on your dress. That’s my advice from watching many friends who are expert sewists.
you will be a beautiful bride in your self-made dream dress. congratulations for this wonderful event 🥿🥿💐💍💄
I made my sisters wedding dress she chose a pattern and l said lets make the bottom under bustle never done it before lol but she gave me her measurements she lived in England and at that time lived in California. L made with a sweetheart neckline and sewed on beaded lace and she came out for a fitting and to take it home with her. Thankfully it was a perfect fit she wanted it floor length so she could wear it after her wedding. It was perfect on her and made her feel beautiful 😊
I love that you’re making your own wedding dress. I am a confident sewer, but didn’t know if I would have time to make my dream dress so I made my veil instead. It took 58 hours and turned out just how I wanted it! It had 150 organza and Swarovski flowers on it which I made by hand! It was three metres long and looked exquisite (if I may say so) over my wedding dress train.
I like that first cotton dress idea shown.
I completely get why you would want to make your wedding dress and I definitely think you have the skills for it. I think a lot of us hoard our favourite fabrics, either because the right pattern hasn't come up or fear or spoiling a much-loved fabric. I have pieces in my stash that I either couldn't afford to buy again or aren't available any more, so I have to be super-sure of what I want to do with them before I start cutting! Like you, I love florals, so seeing what you have in your stash is always a treat!
Absolutely, I could've written the part about special fabrics myself! It's even harder with deadstock fabrics, there is literally only one chance to get it right. I started doing some sketching this week (my drawing skills aren't great) but it's a great way to visualise how the finished garment will look with the print and colours of the fabrics. That could really help you too! ❤
Congratulations on your engagement! I’ve seen your garments so I know you’ll do a wonderful job on your wedding dress. You have great taste in fabrics! I loved every single one of them. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself with finishing all your projects, especially if you’re going to make your own wedding dress. Give yourself time to get that done. I wish you all the best 🪡👗🧵🥰
Thank you so much 🥰 it's going to be the toughest project I've ever done but I can't wait to learn lots of new skills and dip into some couture style sewing! Oh yes wedding dress definitely comes first, I reckon I'll need other projects to work on in-between or I'll lose my mind 😂❤️
Well done for sticking to your own mind. It's your day don't let anyone talk you out of doing what you want to do. Congratulations on your engagement. XXX
Thank you so much ❤️ I just knew it wouldn't feel right wearing a shop bought dress and I really want to make something completely unique so it's a great opportunity to let my creativity flow xxx
Congratulations!!!! Making your own dress is wonderful- customized to your desire.
Exactly!! Totally unique and I can combine elements of all the dresses I loved. Thank you so much 😊❤️
Hi! I totally support you in making your own wedding dress! Such a unique project. Eager to see the process ❤️
I have some fabric very similar to the rose print, on a very pale pink background, that I bought last year from Stitch Fabrics. It’s actually linen, not cotton, but it’s very fine, almost like a gauze, and would certainly need lining. I think I bought 6 meters. It would make the most wonderful bridesmaids’ dresses. Let me know if you’re interested, I haven’t used it yet.
What a joy to watch you today! Thank you for making me smile. I love that you plan to make your wedding dress. I have been sewing for many years and saving the "special fabrics" really resonated with me I laughed out loud as I do this all the time it sometimes stops me sewing anything at all! Thank you for the inspiration! Good luck with your sewing plans for the year.
I wouldn't wash the pink tweed as it will absolutely fall apart to nearly nothing. You'll need a backing for it to make it stable so it doesn't stretch, twill is recommended for this. And you'll need to stitch the tweed and twill together, search for the channel 'Perfect Jacket' here on TH-cam. She sews a lot of Chanel twill style jackets and is much better at describing how to sew with twill than I am.
Congratulations on the engagement! 💍
I’m so excited to see your wedding dress!
Thank you, I'm so excited to share!! No idea how I'll keep it to myself 😂
Congratulations on your engagement :-). I am a 2024 bride as well and I also decided to make my dress because it make sense :-). I will also make few bridal looks for the entire week end + bachelorette. I already made a jumpsuit for my civil wedding last October as well as the bridesmaid dresses. Good luck for your projects, looking forward to follow your journey :-)
Your intro... those exact words could have come out of my mouth. All of it: the UFOs, the stash, sewing by current inspiration, etc. And there's nothing bonkers about making your own dress. What makes them fancy is usually the length/train and embellishments, sometimes an overlay. Otherwise, it's usually a princess seam dress underneath it all. Make a mock-up or as many as you need, and the final result will be stunning! Also, the pink tweed: it needs fusible interfacing, ideally before you cut any of it or handle it much. I'm not talking about the white interfacing at craft stores, but what is often called "weft" interfacing. You garments might also need a crisp, sew-in interfacing (or stiff cotton, muslin, etc) for the front sections, waistband, etc. and maybe even the whole bodice to keep it from sagging over time. It's a high-end fabric that needs high-end treatment.
You could absolutely make your own wedding dress. I made my wedding dress both times ha ha ha. I did not know how to sew. I picked up a singer sewing book and I taught myself How to sew and i made two dresses. They came out beautiful.
Congrats on your engagement! I'm getting married this year too, and firmly in the "making my own outfit" camp, so I get where you're coming from! Excited to follow along with your journey of making all those outfits, and everything else you work on this year.
Congratulations how exciting!! When are you getting married? Once you get the sewing bug I think it's impossible not to want to create your own wedding look, it's the ultimate challenge! Have you tried anything on yet? ❤️
Congratulations on your engagement! I totally understand your wanting to make your wedding dress. When I got married my best friend and I made my dress. It was a wonderful fantastic experience. We used 5 different patterns, tea stained lace to match the satin perfectly, and hand beaded the bodice. It was a lot of work but worth every minute. It was exactly as I wanted it, fit perfectly, comfortable and I wouldn't have changed a thing! Good Luck and have fun with it! PS... Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the process, you will have enough going on to stress about and the last thing you want is to worry about what you are wearing for this important day! 💙 🤗
For the tweed fabric i recommend applying an ultra light weight fusible interfacing to all on the fabric before sewing and cutting the fabric and when sewing use a small stitch length. For cut pieces apply additional stay tape to bias cut areas. Tweed stretches very easily in all the wrong ways. I recently sewed a tweed blazer dress and these tips helped a lot to prevent snags on the tweed and weird stretching. Hope this helps!
Frey chech on the wool
Thanks Gina, your sewing channel is the one I enjoy the most because I share many of the same favourites particularly Zimmerman. I’d love to see more designer outfits replicated such as the Chanel jacket and aforementioned Zimmerman. I love seeing you alter patterns to adjust them to your preferences, something I do too but didn’t know anyone else who did.
So excited for your sewing plans. All the fabrics are gorgeous and patterns seem perfect. Great idea to use your favorite fabrics and not leave them in your stash! I'm on that train of thought too. If we don't now then when. 💙😁
Completely understand what you mean about sewing your own wedding dress, I would be exactly the same! 👗😊
The pink wool tweed - suggest block fusing light interfacing to all garment pieces to enable stability but also cuting fabric and interfacing larger then fusing then cutting out pieces will ensure more accuracy. I bought this pattern for granddaughter 😁
Those are great tips thank you! The pattern is lovely, your granddaughter will love it 🥰
Can’t wait to see those dresses made up
Congratulations on your wedding plans I believe making your own wedding dress is just super special YOU GO GIRL - thank you for the reminder to use our special fabrics, i have made a commitment to myself to sew my material stach before i buy anything else (wish me luck with that 😊)
You tweed .interline it with organza so you sew as one piece, then finish ith Hong Kong seams.
Keeps it light weight and stop it stretching. Interfacing strip on neck sleeve and bottom edges!
Go for it! I think it’s really important- you are right!
I love your taste in florals!
Just came across your channel and love it, especially as you use big4 patterns. From what I’ve seen so far, you are more than capable of making your own wedding dress! Congratulations!
Thank you so much for watching! I work for Simplicity but Big 4 patterns have always been my favourites ☺️ I hope so, fingers crossed it works out x
Great vlog as always so pleased you are vlogging again. With The Chanel fabric personally I would overlook after cutting out where you can. You could perhaps use a stabiliser spray. Sooo glad you are finishing the coat you were kind enough to tell me you were going to finish it. Finally congratulations and I think you should make your wedding gown and also looking forward to seeing your journey with that. You had better crack on lol ❤❤
Good for you!!!
Congratulations on your engagement! I’m positive that everything you make for your wedding week will be beautiful! I love all of your Make 9 choices. What about McCalls 8195 with the spaghetti straps and make it midi or maxi length in the blue floral linen? I am planning on making that pattern in a black and white floral cotton lawn for the summer. 💖
Hi Gina - just wanted to encourage you to make your own wedding gown! But start early! I made mine and waited until a month before because I wanted to lose some weight first before starting sewing. I was sewing through the night for several nights the week before, but I got it done and loved it!
Amazing!! That's incredible that you got it done but I can only imagine how stressful that must've been! My Mum is a seamstress and she's constantly nagging me to get started so I need to get a wriggle on before she loses her mind 😂
Congratulations on your engagement. Your fabric choices are beautiful
Hello, you have some lovely fabrics to make up this year 😊 could I ask you where in Italy you are having your wedding? I ask because I live in Italy and I know a lot of people choose to come here to get married👰
Congrats Gina! I just discovered your channel this week and I'm enjoying it!
I was wondering what pattern you used for the blue dress you will remove the sleeves from? That dress and the fabric are so lovely!
Thank you so much :)
Thanks so much for watching! It's S9326, one of my all time favourite patterns ☺️ I made the version without the ruffle for this dress, it's super simple but the shape so perfect!
It's not crazy! Make your own dress!!!
I can’t remember which UTube person posted this (sorry), she used strips of iron on interfacing to stabilize the edges of her fabric. Congratulations on your engagement. Looking forward to the bridal sewing, :)
Very exciting sewing your wedding dress! Have you watched Sarah Naomi on TH-cam? She made her own wedding dress. She lives in France. You may find her videos helpful. ❤ Take care. ~Nancy
Hi Nancy! Yes I absolutely love Sarah's videos. The first thing I did when I got engaged was watch her wedding dress series 😆 so many helpful tips on there!
👏🏻👗
Mayybe all makes this year will be Wedding / Italy ... I suggest buying 50 metres of calico / cheap polycotton / cheap polyester etc for toiles 😁😂🤣😁😂🤣💖💖💖💖
I think they probably will be!! Not sure exactly where I think I'm going to find the time for these other makes 🤦🤣
For the wool fabric (or even wool blend) meant for the Chanel type pattern - I wouldn't wash it or even dry clean it - plan on hanging it in your shower and steaming it if you want to freshen it up. And if you still want to pre-shrink it before hand do the same thing though it won't shrink much. If you decide you must dry clean it then sew the edges together with a zig-zag to keep it from fraying in the cleaning. When you cut the pattern pieces out, before doing anything else zig-zag the edges of each pattern piece (or overlock those edges to keep them from fraying. There might be suggestions to stabilize with fusible interfacing to stabilize - I have not tried that method and can see some complications for the seams doing that. It will be a lovely garment and can't wait to see.
Wow these are amazing tips thank you. I've got quite a gentle steamer so I could give that a try. There are lots of comments about the interfacing method but I see where you're coming from. I tried that method with a bias cut dress once and it spoilt the seams. I've got quite a lot of fabric here so enough to practice with luckily ☺️
You need to stay stitch each pattern piece after you cut it out with the wool tweed.

You are a grown up woman. Why are people trying to convince you you can't sew or decide what you want? I would probably walk away and blick them@
Sorry,I pressed the wrong button. don't like the pattern you've chosen for the large rose designer fabric.I think the corset bodice will break up the beautiful design.Whatever you decide on I know it will be perfect.
Ooh that's a great point! There is another Madalynne pattern that is similar to the Rose Cafe bustier dress which I wondered might suit it better? Or I could make another version of the brown velvet Vogue dress? Let me know what you think! ❤️
Congratulations on your engagement. As your planning to make so many garments for your wedding I would concentrate on those first and then,if you have time, your make 9. You could even ,slowly make your make 9 in-between wedding sewing if you need a break.Don't forget you have to source all your fabrics and trims for your wedding dress and other garments plus their patterns before you can make them. Try not to panic and compare it to a Christmas dinner . Everyone panics over making a Christmas dinner when it is just a Sunday dinner with extras.Your wedding dress is just a dress with extras. Concentrate on your Wedding day plus extra days first and then you can relax rather than panic. Your make 9 fabrics are gorgeous.I personally don't like the
Thank you so much! And I love the way you've put that. I'm trying not to overthink it too much and see it more as a fun challenge rather than a huge pressured project. Ah yes, I'm definitely going to be concentrating on the dress mainly, these projects are just to break it up so I don't completely lose my mind 😆❤️
I have lovely fabric I bought when I was 16. I am 64, and am finally going to use it this year 🤗
