    Very intelligent and very knowledgeable, our Ronan. Having the confidence to trust what he was doing and not be intimidated by a name is already an achievement. But he's also figured out the optimal profile, whilst many people already thought they knew it, but didn't. Again, the self confidence and brains are remarkable. Of course, he's still gone up his (steep) segment at an average of 1450-1500 VAM (rough calculation) for the whole day. Yes, the segment is steep, but anyone who ever tried a strava up a similarly steep, short brute, knows exactly how lung busting that can be. Doing it 75-odd times at that speed?! It'll be a while before this record gets broken, I'm guessing. Well done Ronan.

    I am completely expecting a „Ineos 5:59 in a few years time“.

    • @LarsRR
      @LarsRR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Click Bait This Irish Ex-Pro, who pretty much had to do it all on his own, with probably very little actual scientific analysis, and not world class power data (365 FTP, 72kg according to his Strava), showed, that there is a lot more potential. This climb is probably very good, but it certainly isn’t perfect. For Ineos 159, they found one of the flattest pieces of roads, got the surface fixed, had perfect pacing, pacemakers, and months months (with nutritionists, medical staff, physiotherapists etc) of preparation. There is so so much potential here (a better climb, perfect gearing, better pacing, better nutrition, wind shelter, perfect road, maybe at altitude or if that’s the wrong way to go maybe below sea level (like Israel, idk)) AND of course, a rider like Bernal or Carapaz just has more power, for longer, at a much lower weight. I am sure sub 6 can be done. If everything is perfect.
      Huge respect to Ronan, but even he says „Bernal would probably go 6:04“.

    • @Jan-Velske
      @Jan-Velske 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Click Bait Including rolling resistance, air resistence and drive train losses you need about 6,5 w/kg for 1770 VAM. 5 w/kg is approx what this dude rode during his climbs unless he had bigger tail wind. With steep gradient you can get about an 7:1 ratio of ascending to descending so this leaves 5:15h for uphill or 1685 VAM. This requires about 6,1-6,2 w/kg with a super light bike maybe 6,0. This is in GC riders threshold range. Given they get rest every few minutes it is pretty much at the border of possible impossible. So perfect for ineoa :)

    • @LarsRR
      @LarsRR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Click Bait nah. Two hour marathon is something the greatest runners have chased for decades. Hundreds and thousands of people have dedicated their lives to perfecting the marathon and have never even come close. Everesting was “invented” less than 10 years ago and really became a big thing this year. The current WR is held by a non pro (which hasn’t happened in Marathon in decades). We’ll see how difficult it really is when there is a “Nike Breaking2/ Ineos 159”-like attempt.

    Commenting just in case he didn't say it, but Phil needs to look for an exposed road to do his attempt too because Ronan had the pleasure of fantastic tailwind up the climb that day here in Ireland. Mamore Gap is pretty exposed so he definitely got the extra advantage along with everything else he did to the bike, Kudos with an absolutely amazing effort 💪

    • @worstretirementever
      @worstretirementever  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hard to think a tailwind matters much at 14% to be honest. That’s like going up a ladder

    • @jonnylindsay3645
      @jonnylindsay3645 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having ridden mamore gap a few times doing the innishowen 100 event the tailwind def would make a difference and it is very exposed. I'd love to know what the wind direction and speed were on the other most recent top 5 times

    • @mrGuy959
      @mrGuy959 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@worstretirementever He was climbing at around 11 km/h with a 21 km/h tailwind so basically whatever drag he would have had in still wind could be estimated to be thrust. Looking at a bike calculator website for the drag at 11 km/h and that looks like around 18 watts, plus you're not having the drag from going up the hill so it's basically doubled to over 30 watts. It's like an extra 10% of power on the around 300 watts he was doing.

  • @rcranes2227
    @rcranes2227 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome video!
    So I know that you guys are looking for straight, steep segments and I understand the reasoning for those. I do wonder though, with the resulting segments being quite short, whether there's time losses on the descent that involve getting up to speed at the start of the descent and scrubbing speed at the end (and then compounding those with multiple reps), that overcome the losses you would incur from say, having to slow down for a curve or two on a longer descent that involves a few curves.
    I guess the question is, have you considered a longer steep segment that might have some curves and whether or not decreasing the number of reps would gain you some time?
    Any math nerds besides Phil that have crunched numbers on this?

    It´s becoming a serious thing, next year Ineos will build the perfect climb with fresh pavement, Pinarello will build a specific bike and Bernal will try the 6h Mark
    Nice Interview, thanks for that.
    Congratulations Ronan

      Yeah. A man made hill at whatever gradient they calculate as optimal and a stupid light pinarello that is just barely strong enough to carry his 130lbs. I'm already dreading it.

    Great interview. Looking at his strava feed for the record, he doesn't actually hold the KOM for the segment, somebody else holds it from nearly 4 years ago, beating Ronan's best by 1 second
