The actor Meena Kumari began her 33-year career as a child, and went on to act in films like Majhli Didi, Pakeezah, Baiju Bawra and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.
unforgettable screen presence in the 1950s and ’60s. By the end of her 33-year-long career, she had 92 films under her belt, including classics such as Pakeezah (1972), Baiju Bawra (1952), Daaera (1953) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962).
She bagged four Filmfare awards over the course of her career and in 1963, received and won all nominations as Best Actress for Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. The film, in which Kumari plays a tippler wife, echoes her own struggles with alcoholism, which led to liver cirrhosis and caused her death.
But Meena Kumari was more than the tragedies of her life and untimely death. She was a powerful performer dedicated to her craft, and a singer and poet as well. As Javed Akhtar once put it, “People like Meena Kumari are paradoxes. We try to understand them, we appreciate them, we criticise them, we pity them, we laugh at them, we admire them. But they remain paradoxes.”
This is what happened to Meenaji in real life too. After her divorce from filmmaker Kamal Amrohi and even when she was married to him, Meenaji sought solace in alcohol and a string of relationships with men far younger than her. These included poet-filmmaker Gulzar (who denies the relationship outright) and Dharmendra

Nice presentation. Story of Mina Kumari is very inspirational. It is found after minor evaluation of her story that she was unlucky specially she could not choose perfect life partner. She wrongly preferred to drink alcohal (sharab) for facing her loneliness. Sharab can not be true fellow of anyone. Therefore, I always advise to my every friend since my school time to not drink sharab as its company in life and choose any positive way for facing loneliness.
