Sam, Thank you for the excellent unbiased review. I have owned and driven BMW X5 and 3-series for over 20 years. BMW X5 was a well designed SUV. Unfortunately, the current design appears to look like Japanese fade with using 90, 30 and 45 degree line body sculpture. These shapes lacks exquisiteness, they will date rapidly like 1980's Subaru XT6. Similarly, their interior lacks design excellence or originality, it is simply functional design. They don't shout luxury that Range Rover or Bentley exudes. Quality of interior material is a grade higher than Toyota Camry not Lexus. BMW petrol 6 and 8 cylinder engines have been known to have had history of problem particularly with oil leaks and timing belt which still remains today. BMW knows that high engine output means high heat dissipation requiring excellent engine heat management system. They miserably fail this challenge by using plastic parts instead of steel (to save weight) in their coolant system which always prematurely fails. I have experienced this first hand in my ownership. Whilst BMW vehicles are more reliable than Range Rover but nothing like Lexus. In contrast, Range Rover designers designs and builds their SUV as an statement of exquisiteness, as if it is curved from a single piece of granite block. They don't copy bits of pieces from other car manufacturers. Their interior follows Bentley's fastidious plush finish. It is true that Range Rover Sport is not brisk both in 6 or 8 cylinders compared to BMW. Similarly, high centre of gravity and air suspension means that it does not handle as well. These attributes are by design. You don't want to be seen in a super luxury SUV driving like a drag racer. You just want to glide on the road and remain cocooned in your world without seeking attention from other road users. What is holding Range Rover back is their lack of quality control culture. They need to engage quality control specialists from Rolls Royce aircraft engine manufacturer ( No 1 choice of engine for Boeing and Airbus) to assist them to instill quality control culture in their manufacturing DNA.
