SHIRA WT106-449 - PROBABLY A PAIR OF THE BEST BUDGET 80S WALKIE TALKIES YOU COULD BUY

  • On this video we look at a pair of the rightly popular Shira walkie talkies from the early 1980s, unlike many of the 49Mhz sets these ones not only sound nice but perform very well for such a simple circuit, watch as I fix up this pair and test them out literally in a field.

As a kid I was obsessed with walkie talkies. I really wanted to own some, but we were poor. Eventually I convinced my mum to buy me a pair that we had seen on Newbury Market. The seller had three different pairs. Little grey Minicoms (which I later found to be very good), another pair I don't remember, and some Startronics with a rubber duck antenna. The guy told me they had a two mile range. Imagine my disappointment when I couldn't get 20 feet out of them!

oh mama ! you remind me of my childhood in brianza ,,, in 1975 my grandparents gave me 2 walkies like these ,,, just 50 meters radius in open space, they were very low quality toys but we had a great time my little brother and I. Even now when I see walkie I have an attraction ... Ciao Ciao to you and Tyler very nice and good boy from uncle Franco from north Milan

I had a pair of these back in 1982 (a year before I got into CB) and used the to talk to my friend across the street. I found the range somewhat disappointing (less than 100 yards). My father told me to use the correct antenna for this band. I didn't have one so I just tied a long piece of thin copper wire to the top of the attic, and wound the other end round the telescopic antenna. It was probably about 6m long, which conveniently is the wavelength for these radios! Wow, what a difference, my friend who was incredibly 'hissy' at 80 yards was now as clear as day. I also picked up other users on other streets! About 10 years ago, I bought a pair of these, boxed, off eBay, in mint condition (for nostalgia's sake) I echo your comments about the receive section. My Yupiteru 7100 scanner was picking up the other set much more easily than the other Shira radio. So, agreed, they have poor RX.

I used to call them 'baby bugs'.
You often could hear the parents copulating in the next room in order to create the next sprog in the line

Superb, I saw a lot of walkies on market stalls back in the 80s waiting whilst my mum haggled over a pound of bananas, she shops at Waitrose these days 😂

I always wondered what the TX output power of these were. Compared to some other 49MHz sets, there's hardly anything inside these Shiras!

I'm sure that's the ones I had, purchased from my local emporium which sold many "no brand" electronics including those radios that picked up the air and CB band but we're pretty deaf, ok for listening to the top 40 in radio 1 but that's all

I have a pair of these! Mine seem a little off. There's three tuning coils in them, would you know what those do? I have an RF signal generator, SDR, scope etc.

Yes although the adjustment is very coarse, you can't go far wrong to be fair.
