Hi Jordan & Maddie (and Laska!) ! My Wife and I are retiring, and seriously considering moving to Mexico soon. We watch many TH-cam videos, researching where would be the best place for us to retire. Of all the videos we watch, Tangerine Travels
are by far, the most charming, helpful and informative. Please don't let the trolls discourage you. Your videos are awesome and you three are adorable!

@@TangerineTravels yes, please know trolls are people with too much time on their hands, usually not too happy at home, and don't live your lives or make you happy at the end of the day. @Joan Lynch We have a zero-tolerance policy on our channel and social media, but this particular troll storm was in a Facebook group that we don't moderate. Some of these angry people took the liberty of trolling our personal Facebook accounts and Tangerine Travels Facebook page after the group comments.

There's a lot of people i have know that doesn't like Merida (i'm from Merida) but i love it and the most people know merida likes it, i'm actually surprised that some people doesn't realize despite climate (we have A/C in every single store or office etc. Like you have in Arizona) that here is actully peacefull and you can enjoy people, culture, gastronomy etc. The most powerful reason is the safety for the expats but the people are actually nice and kind the people here doesn't even curses a lot. And here is so cheap almost everything especially for strangers, this safety is so precious. You have to remember Merida locates in the poorest and least developed region of Mexico and despite of that Merida is the most devoloped city around here thats a good sign

It's a very large city so it has its nice parts and others that aren't so nice. In Zona Centro, where we were staying, it doesn't seem like the residents take much pride in keeping their streets clean - there was a lot of trash all over that area. It's an interesting contrast compared to many places we've been, where you see residents and business owners sweeping outside of their home every morning.

I was in Merida about 2 months ago and we had a great experience there. We walked all over the Centro HIstorico but stayed near the Paseo de Montejo. I have been to most of the countries in Central and South America and there are few streets that rival the beauty of this street. So, yes, the prices are going to be a bit higher but I think it is to be expected in that part of the city. But for ex-pas who are looking for a place to live I definitely understand the appeal of Merida. It is a real city but not overwhelmingly huge, it is safe, it is always warm, the prices are relatively low, it is a good walking city, it has a lot of modern conveniences, etc. So I get it for sure.
When in the Yucatab we aalso visited Izamal, which is a pueblo magico where all of the buildings are painted yellow and they have a really cool church complex. This is good for half a day. We also liked Valladolid - it is pretty little town, like a small version of Merida, that is worth a day or so. Some cool cenotes nearby. Check out Ek Balaam ruins if you are in Valladolid. I enjoy your channel and look forward to more adventures

A cool glimpse into the city! Great job guys! I often hear people say it's the heat that drives them away from Merida. But if they can't take the hear there, they probably won't be able to stand Cancun, Playa, or Tulum either. Digging the edits! I see you guys trying some new stuff. As for the audio, a separate mic will improve your audio a ton! The most affordable options are the Rode Smartlav+ or a mic that will plug directly into your camera. Definitely. The heat ....or maybe the electricity bills! Someone told us they had to pay 24,000 pesos for a 2-month electric bill in the summer and it was never set below 24 C. Thanks for noticing some of the new effects we've been trying in the videos. Nothing compared to FCP though. Hopefully that'll be the next upgrade. ;) Thanks again for the mic recommendations! After mentioning this in the video, we found a 3D printed wind protecting case made by a German guy who is willing to ship to Mexico. Thank you for being honest about this city. I hate heat and humidity, so I've never had any desire to visit. As for the trolls, can't you block them on Facebook? You're the ones doing all the work to get the videos loaded, so anyone who criticizes should be blocked from commenting. Period! You are making great videos. Happy New Year!

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  5 ปีที่แล้ว

If we're being totally honest, we'd probably hate living there in the hotter months of the year. It was nice when we were there but it's extremely hot and very humid in the summer - not our kind of weather. We can do one or the other, but not both. We were pretty turned off by the absurd amounts of trash in parts of the city.
As for the FB trolls... they were mostly in a group that we don't moderate. So unfortunately the only thing we could do is block them from our personal Facebook accounts and from our Tangerine Travels page when they felt the need to continue the trolling over there. Some people have too much time on their hands.
Thanks for appreciating our honesty and videos. That means a lot to us! Feliz Año Nuevo L Green!

I think our sickness was just a little bit of a cold due to the rapidly changing temps, thankfully, we didn't get a stomach bug or anything - those are awful! Yeah, there's a lot of stuff that we didn't mention about the city. I think it's location is one of the big things a lot of people like about the city: Close to beaches, close to ruins, cenotes, and other popular destinations.

This video spends most of it's time along Paseo de Montejo and in new restaurants and malls north of the center of town - I prefer the center of town and south of the center, which is the old part of the city. They have a great Mercado, and lots of shops and local lunch restaurants which are less expensive than in the upscale neighborhoods. And I like the parks. In the old part of town the houses are sometimes very old, and they all have plain facades facing the street - they do not advertise their charms. But many of them have lovely courtyards and are much more interesting inside. A lot of Merida's beauty is hidden. South of downtown, too, is a more local and traditional area with few tourists, where strangers will say "buenos dias" or "buenas tardes" or "buenas noches" to you as they pass (and which you should return). I found the people of Mérida to be friendly, interesting and helpful.
Most of the restaurants that are open on an American's schedule are around the central square or perhaps in the northern wealthy suburbs - most Mexicans still eat at home most of the time, and their main meal is at mid-day, not in the evening (this is true in Oaxaca and many other parts of Mexico, too), so there are fewer restaurants in traditional neighborhoods.
All that being said - Mérida is too slow and too relaxed for my taste. I prefer the hustle and bustle of Guadalajara. And Merida is very, very hot and humid most of the year. I prefer the weather in Central Mexico.

Those mansions are really beautiful, but it doesn't surprise me some are haunted, given the legacy they represent. Probably during the colonial era up until just before the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution, those mansions were probably the result of the virtual slave labor plantations owned by the elite criollos and worked by the yucatan natives as well as imported slaves of yaquis from the north and koreans from the far east. A friend of mine with roots in Mérida ALWAYS RAVES about this city, the hometown of his parents, sadly his brothers and sisters and he were either born in Mexico City or here in Querétaro. Definitely worth a trip to Mérida to see and experience La Ciudad Blanca! :)

Many people, especially from the north, doesn't understand many of the customs, like close businesses early in the afternoon or find a spot to sleep near work. Or the idea of hospitality or kindess without expecting something in return. Or show gratitude without sarcasm. Or to offer help others without consider their ego might get hurt. Or to show good matters and civility without the intention of feel superior. Or the idea of respectfully avoid people that like to argue.

Thanks for making this video! It provides a realistic picture of Merida. We visited Merida this Fall and had a polarizing experience. Like you, we stayed in the centro historico (just to the south of it) and spent our first days there. We were surprised by how run down everything was and how there was trash everywhere after everything we had read was about how clean the city was. Then we traveled around north and east of the center and everything was super nice and clean. I can see how someone would get a totally different impression of the city depending on where they stayed. We also were surprised by how (relatively) expensive things were in Merida since we had heard how cheap it was.

So, just to be clear, Yucatán Is the península, and also the state in wich cities as Mérida, Valladolid, and archeological places like Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and Mayapan are, Bacalar and Mahaual, playa del Carmen, Cancún, cozumel are un a diferent state (Quintana Roo). The Yucatán peninsula contains 3 states, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
