  • The Truth About Lou Reed (1942 - 2013)
Lou Reed: A True Rock’N’Roll Original
Lou Reed was a rock ’n’ roll bad boy. He abused drugs and alcohol, trashed hotel rooms, cursed at reporters and engaged in bar brawls. Reed was also different. Where most rockers had affairs with supermodels, Reed opted for trysts with transvestites. While typical pop stars sang about how much they missed old girlfriends, Reed sang about bondage and sadomasochism in (“Venus In Furs”).
Google the words “Lou Reed” and you’ll find dozens of incidents describing his brutal, selfish, misanthropic behaviour. There was the time he slapped David Bowie after Bowie suggested Reed cut back on his drug and alcohol use. Or the time he called Bob Dylan a “pretentious kike.” (Reed himself was Jewish.)
Before his anti-authority attitude became a staple of his performances, a young Lou Reed mastered the art of the prima donna rock star at Syracuse University.
As a budding frontman for his band, L.A. and the Eldorados, Reed once refused to play a frigid outdoor gig aboard a boat on the St. Lawrence River. He punctuated his disapproval by smashing his guitar-playing hand through a plate-glass door.
“He just didn’t want to play,” said Richard Mishkin, a 1965 SU alumnus who played bass in the Eldorados. “We had to take him to the ER and I told him, ‘Lou, you play guitar like sh*t anyways.’ And he played the show.”

he was basically a glorified pervert who couldn't sing a note and had a couple of goods songs with melody because of decent musicians around him. This society is twisted, and he played his part in twisting it.

His songs about addiction are some of the most honest and powerful ever written.

My cousin was the girlfriend of Laurie Anderson’s record producer Roma Baran. She met Lou and Laurie socially. I asked both of them if Lou was nice to them and he was and was also generous. This was in the 2000’s. I think he mellowed as he got older but he could be a holy terror to some and was definitely a handful if you displeased him.

His music was dark and disturbing, but it was also honest and unflinching. He was not afraid to explore the darker side of human nature.

He was a cautionary tale about the dangers of drug abuse, but he was also a reminder that even the most troubled people can create great art.

Saw him live in London in 1977 - I couldn't believe it when he told the audience to eff off when they applauded his tuning up between songs!

Probably saw Lou at least once on every UK tour from 1975-2007. Only time where he didn't turn up late, insult the audience, go out of his way to p**s off any casual attendees, turf out any freeloading journalists was that last "Berlin" tour in 2007 and to be fair I wouldn't have had it any other way.

“Street Hassle” is one of the best songs of all time…it has great lyrics,a cool guitar riff, orchestral elements and even a Bruce Springsteen monologue.

I was one of those 10,000 whom bought that album in High School when it came out. It blew me away and stood neck to neck with Captain Beefheart's Safe As Milk album.

I love him because he tells you the truth, about himself , about life, and he doesn't try to make it pretty he just tells you how it is

I knew a guy who was in the punk scene during the early 1980s. I asked him once about the New York Dolls, who were notorious for influencing others to do heroin. He said the Dolls were nothing compared to Lou Reed, who was the worst. I knew about the song Heroin and Niko's overdose, but I had never heard that before. If it is true, it is a sad legacy.

I have read a couple of bios on Lou and have never read that he trashed hotel rooms and started bar room brawls…Lou didn’t like violence, anyway

I love his 1989 album New York. It's stripped down and brilliant. I do think Laurie Anderson mellowed Lou out a bit. Plus he couldn't read or write music and that's what made his guitar playing so unique. I play bass and some guitar and I can't read music either. That gives me inspiration. And the Anthony DeCurtis biography is worth buying (and reading).
