There's a thing called the Games Fashion Archive which has a bunch of game clothing models which should really help with the weird layers. It also has a thing that allows you to turn on and off certain layers. Hopefully that helps with the reference?

"how does the fabric lay on the body?" Fun fact I learned through observation: Hoyoverse are dirty cheaters in character design. If they don't want it to move, or it would be more of a pain to sculpt the prop separate on the body they 'paint' the model. Kokomi for example: Her choker is painted on, but the teardrop pendant is sculpted. If you look closely they've fused the blue and white together on her torso to simplify the physics but it's supposed to be a coat over a bodysuit! So, you're not wrong in being frustrated. I would trust the model more for reference than any official art they provide.
That's less to do with "cheating" character designs and more to do with technical limitations. Genshin Impact is a game intended to run on mobile hardware, and every polygon has a performance cost. A while back Mihoyo released a video of Barbara as a sort of faux-VTuber, and the character mesh used was significantly more detailed than the in-game one

I feel you so much! Had the same problem, esspecially the species thing. I got so fixated on things having to be "realistic" it made my designs worse. Nowadays I just remember it's a cartoon, and the wings don't have to be proportionally large to the body, because it's a drawing and they can fly if i say so. With drawing your characters all the time and nothing else - maybe try to design stuff FOR your characters. Like their phone or room, or a bag etc. Still doing character design work, but also drawing other things :DD

If you are as obsessed with your OCs as I tend to be, you can go to some clothing web store, scroll, and at some point you will go "OMG, [oc name] WOULD TOTALLY WEAR THAT" then screenshot it and save it for later. The biggest problem I used to have is that I didn't pay attention to what THE CHARACTER would like to wear and what is their style. Basically it's good to look at clothes as a part of character's personality.
or the opposite (kind of) you have this story and all these ideas in your head and you have no idea how to get it out much less draw anything 💀 i would actually kill for tips on how to like...organize(?) a story
@@gh02tdu2t Heree i go... Again. First of all, my biggest tip is kinda basic - write stuff down. Don't keep it in your head, just everything you have - write it down. I use some websites to store the info: For characters I recommend Toyhouse. You need a code, but it's usually pretty easy to get one online from someone. It lets you make characters, give them custom css/html bios, organize all the pictures you have of them etc. Tho it's less story-telling focused and more for visual artists. For worldbuilding info Kanka is pretty good. It's also free for the most part. Actually, kanka could actually be used for litteraly everything. It has a character panel and also a timeline panel, which can be used to make story synopsis. Oh yea, actually, if you have the classic case of "i know where the story starts and where it ends, but the middle is just random bits i daydreamed at 3am." Make a synopsis. Write it all down in points, leaving the empty parts and writing down what you know you want to happen and in what order. Then you will know what do you still need to figure out! That's all, Hope it will help ^^
Oh my god. I thought it would be a fun idea to draw myself and my friends in Genshin character’s costumes. I was wrong. The line art alone took me a month. I have massive respect for the amount of detail you did give them. I’m a writer, so whenever it comes to character design, I’m like “shirt, pants, shoes, out the door. Come on, we don’t have all day. You need to have a fight with your brother, nearly die and then get lost in a cave, you can worry about makeup some other time.”

The best way to unlearn perfectionism in art (at least, for me) is to do a lineless redraw of something. Paint straight on in just colour. No sketching, no lineart, no cleaning up. You come to really appreciate the slight messiness.
I’m so with you on the love to detail graph thing. I love detail, but I don’t like doing it out of outfit construction confusion. I also favor simple designs with a splash of detail. Designs like hoyoverse make my wrist hurt. This was a very fun video, and the title is deliciously hilarious.

i don't know if someone has already commented this BUT something i think might help you with figuring out how the clothes of a certain character works is looking at the 3d models like, outside the game. people always extract the models as soon as they release in the game so you shouldn't have much trouble finding them! genshin characters are all over the place, and as an easy way to visualize the models MMD is good and simple, you can pose the models and hide specific parts so you can see the clothes separately :)) i love your art so much btw it inspires me a ton
Sugesstion i would love to see you do the 20 style art challenge again with the new shows/ movies/games etc that you have encountered, and turn your now new art style of your oc june that you have now, to see what has changed into your new likes and preferences.

My biggest per peeve about HYV's character designs is always how OVERLY DETAILED so its always nice to see people simplify or even outright redesign these characters in a way that makes them feel more solid.

Really love the love/anguish scale concept, drawing what you want to and ignoring the tedious bits that would just drain motivation. Sparkle actually isn't a gold fish, she's the representation of a "Red Herring". She's sneaky like the fox, misleading like the red herring, but you won't really care as she's beautiful and will pull you in like the sakura petals in Spring.

I LOVE the restrained fox mask... I ADORE it. It is such a cool vibe. If I were to take your design and make a character from it, I would turn her into a sort of were-kitsune vibe. Like, a Kitsune who was tricked into doing good with her mischevious nature through a deal she made, or is doing her time for having done evil things in the past. Something mysterious and asking the philosophical question of "does she deserve the "penance" and will it change her for the better, or is she meerly biding her time?" sort of vibe.
4:40 I think for me the trouble here was the double animals. Or at least it would be for me, to each their own. I feel if you[re GONNA have a character theme based on an animal that's cool in theory, but I also reckon you should pick one animal and stick to it. You don't get much more different than a fox and a goldfish, and I can see how that would be hard to put into one drawing. Yours is still a good design! But not as much as the other two.
when i do my sketches, i usually put an ungodly amount of details into them, then when I get to inking i just go "yeah... I'm not gonna do that. I refuse to make myself suffer just to have the pants have sewing lines, and the gloves have texture."

I'm also curious what you use to edit your videos and how you do it, cuz they look SUPER cute and I'd love to do something similar if I'm ever brave enough to make art videos! Really love the love/anguish scale concept, drawing what you want to and ignoring the tedious bits that would just drain motivation. Doesn't work for every situation but I don't work in those (or as an artist but that's not the point). The face drawing addiction is real and I'll default to it if I don't have any ideas. Idk who they are either.

Sparkle actually isn't a gold fish, she's the representation of a "Red Herring". She's sneaky like the fox, misleading like the red herring, but you won't really care as she's beautiful and will pull you in like the sakura petals in Spring.

I LOVE the restrained fox mask... I ADORE it. It is such a cool vibe. If I were to take your design and make a character from it, I would turn her into a sort of were-kitsune vibe. Like, a Kitsune who was tricked into doing good with her mischevious nature through a deal she made, or is doing her time for having done evil things in the past. Something mysterious and asking the philosophical question of "does she deserve the "penance" and will it change her for the better, or is she meerly biding her time?" sort of vibe.
4:40 I think for me the trouble here was the double animals. Or at least it would be for me, to each their own. I feel if you[re GONNA have a character theme based on an animal that's cool in theory, but I also reckon you should pick one animal and stick to it. You don't get much more different than a fox and a goldfish, and I can see how that would be hard to put into one drawing. Yours is still a good design! But not as much as the other two.

when i do my sketches, i usually put an ungodly amount of details into them, then when I get to inking i just go "yeah... I'm not gonna do that. I refuse to make myself suffer just to have the pants have sewing lines, and the gloves have texture."

This was really interesting to look at! I'm not a big Hoyoverse fan, but i love how you designed her! I'm also curious what you use to edit your videos and how you do it, cuz they look SUPER cute and I'd love to do something similar if I'm ever brave enough to make art videos!
That being said - I totally understand what you mean when art becomes a career. I've been struggling myself lately with me graduating soon for my sequential art BFA. I find I haven't drawn as much for fun anymore and have been steadily getting burnt out. I guess it's just something you gotta balance (something I'm trying to figure out myself).
Seeing you struggle with Sparkle's outfit really speaks to me! Have you ever seen Pela's outfit? From someone who wishes to cosplay her in the future, the unspeakable agony I felt when I realized that everything she was wearing was. All. One. Dress. The sleeves, ribbons, cape/shawl thingies are all attached together in some form 🥲

Hoyoverse designs are like horderves, imo. They're about a thousand beautiful little things all laid out together that look so beautiful all laid out on one table.
But my god, once a chef has to try REMAKE every single one you realise that its so complex you'd... rather make a single dinner and call it a day 😭😭😭
