I purchased this album after viewing this video. I bought it of of amazon. Paid $40 after import fees and shipping. The album is called "Tsugaru Fusion" by Shinichi Kinoshita. This song "Raikou" is 12 minutes and some change long on the album. This is the short version. I highly recommend this album it will blow you away!

I get excited each and every time I watch this. Even I can feel the rapid blow flow and adrenaline to seeing such an amazing performance, especially in a battle between two mesmerizing and powerful instruments: The Koto and Shamisen. Cheers to the most beautifully powerful country and culture in the world 🇯🇵
I've drummed for many years and this is the best drummer relationship to melody I've seen. The drums are tuned in exactly to the shamisen. Every note the taiko drummer performs is has meaning. Most drum solos are just noise to me but this is a melodic drummer. Thank You Thank you Thank You for posting!!!!
Search for a drummer's name on Apple Music and you'll find a couple of their collab albums: Shuichi Hidano Shamisen player name is spelled on Apple Music as Shin'ichi Kinoshita
As an American, this type of music seems to speak to me. Almost like every song is a story from an aging warrior who is describing his feats and accomplishments on the battlefield before he passes away. It ignites something in my soul, a “flame of humanity”, if you will. I have very much been interested in the teachings of Bushidō and Miyamoto Musashi since I was a child, and not in a weeaboo way either. This music is passionate and inspires one’s sense of dignity and pride to rise to the surface
c'mon, people! Don't you know the difference between a duel and a duet? Gosh, these guys are playing together! (and it sounds REAAAAAAAAAAALLY cool!!) Love it! Thanks for posting it!
Aah thank you very much! :D Yoshida Brothers was exactly what I was looking for, actually ^^ (similarity between their music and the tracks 'Bunta' and 'Jiraiya's theme' from Naruto is great :D)
He plays so many notes very smoothly, some people would feel restricted with only 3 strings as opposed to a western style guitar with 6 to 12 strings, but this guy is musical genius. Shalom-
Shamisen (3 strings) is Shin-ichi Kinoshita (木下伸市)(木乃下真市) Wa-daiko (taiko) is Hiroshi Motofuji (茂戸藤浩司) * Name of the song is " Thunder Lights " (rai koh ) (雷光)
I think the taiko drummer is Hiroshi Motofuji-san. His style is so obvious, I saw his performance in Singapore last year with his taiko group (Motofuji's), very interesting and entertaining. He's the one who play taiko drum in ost. Ghost in the Shell (collaboration with Kenji Kawai). Yes, the shamisen player is Shinichi Kinoshita-san, the legendary. Thx for uploading their "battle". Very nice performance, as nice as the one I see "battle" between Koto and Taiko.
The drummer is defo Hiroshi Motofuji. I met him on two occasions in London at the Royal Academy of Music where he was teaching for the AMC Summer School! His peformance in August 2006 at the RAM was taiko with Chinese erhu (two-stringed fiddle, played by Hu Bin) which was amazing!
So cool. Great Tsugaru flavor. I did not know them but shamisen player seems to be also composer of this piece. His name reads Shinichi Kinoshita and the drummer, Hiroshi Motofuji. Thank you for sharing. The title reads "Raikou (Lightning)".
i was about to say the same thing but you beat me to it, its a popular misconseption about duo instrumentals that people fail to grasp, if its 2 people playing, most of the time some idiot is gonna post a video with VS inbetween the 2 instruments, why? well i guess if it excites them in their mind they can do as they please, wrong they may be, but on the other hand, i love traditional japanese music, nice one for posting the video, origato
It is funny how so many people ask everday where I got my shamisen from.. I just tell them the truth.. You can only get one from japan or okinawa. Shmisen or shamsen which originated in China, brought to Okinawa and then from there main land japan. but just like the taiko, shamisen, koto biwa are all south east asia in origin. So all there history and culture and legends are performed with these instruments like any folk music
Great musical characterization of lightning! Super-good stuff. Re: Gaineyatq's question, looks like the device is on his (left) thumb also. A little help here, please.
Directly from wikipedia: The upper part of the dō is almost always protected by a cover known as a dō kake, and players often wear a little band of cloth on their left hand to facilitate sliding up and down the neck. This band is known as a yubikake. There may also be a cover on the head of the instrument, known as a tenjin. So it's actually a Yubikake. Yubi means ring, but I'm not sure on kake, since I don't know the kanji, and I don't know much japanese.
@higuma75 Actually the instrument in origin was used pre WW2. Originally of Chinese origin. Modern taiko as we know it now though was started at the beginning of the 1950's you were partially right! The original style of music used on the taiko drums before the 50's was called Gagaku, a certain type of "court style" music. One of the oldest forms actually that is still played today.
I've seen a comment in the same video published later from another user this note: Name of the song :" Thunder Lights " (rai koh ) (雷光) Composer :Shin-ichi Kinoshita CD Album "KAI-TSUGARU FUSION " by "Shinichi Kinoshita " Taiko (Drums) Player is Hiroshi Motofuji(浩司 茂戸藤) He is music Player of "Naruto Shippuuden "!! The large tuning pegs are for leverage. They are friction pegs and turned by grabbing the peg with your whole fist, so they have to be as big as your hand. You wouldn't be able to turn a friction peg with just two fingers like you can a geared peg.
I was screaming throughout this performance because of all the passion they had put into creating this astonishing piece
46 turned their laptop upsidedown to like this again
+Daniel watts the number changes. So it may have gone from 46 to 56 and now it is 59.
I saw this video also 14 years ago in college. Now I have my own Shamisen, traveled to Japan, and still never get tired of this sound.
このお二人のライブには何度も行きましたが、本当にすごかったです❤
また観たいなぁ

this doesn't seem like a 'VS." to me, they are accompanying each other not dueling.
Taiko x Shamisen. In Japanese, against and with, together and opposite use the same word.
@@SaurianSavior you've got a point
Vs always doesn't mean you have grudge or dueling. It can mean contrast of 2 melodies.
you can take this as an comparison of instruments Taiko vs Shamisen on the same music

Such a treasure I found!
Only traditional music instrument can be found as an ultimate tool for any expression. This masterpiece is once of a kind
Yeah. It's basically the Asian banjo
@@ItsRyan265 the banjo really isn’t that important in western music. The acoustic guitar is a closer comparison
It is soooo good. As a Japanese, I think we should let other countries know about this great instrument of ours!
As an Indian I already know . Waggaki music is love ❤

Beautiful instrument!
Aah thank you very much! :D
Yoshida Brothers was exactly what I was looking for, actually ^^
(similarity between their music and the tracks 'Bunta' and 'Jiraiya's theme' from Naruto is great :D)
The best timing I have come across thus far ...
This invokes the feeling of a high-tempo horse chase, possibly through the woods at night with a full moon.
I love japan classic music.
Simply Fantastic!
Great musicians, great sincronism. Hope someday I can be as good as them, or at least the better I can be.
Great ♫!
well. that was something new. i've heard OF a shamisen, but have never actually heard or seen one played before. thank you.
Fantastic! Watched it 2 times in a row and now again!

SO DAMN GOOD!!!! so natural and simple sounds and yet so wonderful music
Awesome!
What amazing control and timing!!!
He plays so many notes very smoothly, some people would feel restricted with only 3 strings as opposed to a western style guitar with 6 to 12 strings, but this guy is musical genius. Shalom-
no versus but featuring! ^^
That's magnificant, these guys are pretty brilliant. I like this very much!
This is beyond cool. There isn't enough words to describe it. Epic music. Just. Epic.
Beautiful music. Thank you Mr.Kinoshita and Mr.Motofuji.
Wow!! Those are some very talented musicians, their sense of timing is incredible!
Truly beautiful and powerful. I too would love to get a copy of this music.
The way they both nod their heads almost at the end... *w*

Incredible! Amazing timing these guys have!
2:39 was the best

Shamisen (Shinichi Kinoshita) vs Taiko (Hiroshi Motofuji)
Kobi Gerassi Thank you!
the fact that this video is 14 years old make me feel fucking old omg
Amazing video! adding to favs

This is so cool, I love the song.
Whoa I like it. The Shamisen and Taiko melody is very energetic. Nice ^^
and the name of the composition is 雷光 (らいこう) read: raikou which means "lightning"
BEAUTIFUL music!
Great musical characterization of lightning! Super-good stuff.

excellent
Gets me hyped and ready for the lunch rush at work 😎
i like this kind of music pretty much...so great stuff!!! :)
I LOVE the sound of the Shamisen. I wish I could obtain one, they're SO expensive and almost a rarity nowadays.

mind blowing yo
Arigato
what a wonderful rhythm...wow
If you still want to know, the Shamisen player is Shinichi Kinoshita and the Taiko drummer is Hiroshi Motofuji .
@CrazyDave408 well played! I almost got frustrated... well played indeed
Both very cool instruments!!! Kudos to them!
WOW!
