The Smiling Friends tackle a new case, but can Charlie succeed without Pim’s usual demeanor? Plus, Glep helps Alan stay awake.
EDIT (1/15/22): I've seen a lot of comments saying things like "why didn't they make this a real episode?".
The idea behind the creation of this animatic was NEVER to try and get my episode officially made. Rather, it was made as a showcase of my storyboarding capabilities. Having writers look at fanfiction is generally forbidden from what I understand, and could be considered an "unsolicited screenplay submission". I wouldn't want anyone to get in trouble. 😵💫
Q&A:
1. What is this?
This animatic is a fan-made sequel to the Smiling Friends pilot. It was created to demonstrate my storyboarding chops to creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack in hopes of networking with them. I’m graduating from CSUN this May, so I wanted to see if networking with them could lead to some sort of work down the line, either with them or with their many connections. Zach and I both live in Burbank, so I wanted to use this project to reach out to him specifically.
2. How did you make this?
In May 2020, about a month after the Smiling Friends pilot aired, I got the idea for this project. From May all the way through December, I developed a 19-page script, created character model sheets, storyboarded it, recorded the dialogue, added sound effects/music, sound mixed it, and finally put it all together. I had started it as an outside project, but one of my professors let me work on it as a class assignment, which gave me a deadline of December. I was able to get the rough cut done in time and I spent some sporadic days after Winter Break cleaning it up for this release. I was going to create an elaborate behind-the-scenes video, but my school schedule is too busy.
3. What software did you use?
I used Toon Boom Storyboard Pro for the boards, Photoshop for the character turnarounds, Adobe Audition for the sound recording/mixing, and Adobe Premiere to do the final assembly. Trenchbroom, software used for creating Quake Levels, was used for the 3D backgrounds.
4. Why did you do special voices for everyone, but not do one for Charlie?
The dialogue was one of the trickiest parts of the project for me. I was super self-conscious about all the dialogue while recording it. Zach has a truly one-of-a-kind voice and hearing me impersonating it would have been extremely cringy. Trust me.
5. Why do you pronounce Glep as Gleb?
I totally thought it was spelled Gleb, but it wasn’t until after I finished the audio mix that I saw that people online were calling him “Glep”. According to the closed captions on the Adult Swim website, it’s pronounced “Fleb”, but there’s no way that’s correct.
6. How do you feel now that it’s done?
Regardless of the outcome of all this, this project was created as a labor of love. Even if Zach and Michael never even see it, I’m super proud of what I’ve achieved, and I hope my fellow Smiling Friends fans enjoy it as well.

@@helixsol7171 That's true, but it's more of a nod to the episode than an important part of the plot. If the viewer didn't watch the Desmond episode before, they'd still know from the dialogue that it was some kind of incident which left Pim upset.

Thank you for mentioning the structure! I spent a lot of time making sure it tied together. I studied the format of the pilot and basically used their exact same structure to make my script. Not only was it rejected, adult swim chose mr pickles over hell benders, and i have been pissed off for a long long time over that. Finally with this i felt fine despite the venture bros getting cancelled.

not to be rude but it kinda over relies on akward moments to get a laugh. Especially in the beginning it almost had no dialogue. I feel like it wouldn't make for a great episode. But it's excellent as a fan animatic
I feel like Yum Dummers could be played by Meat Canyon for sure if this gets seen. I surely hope it does I mean the designs are spot on, the jokes, the voice acting (even if it’s just temporary), it’s all amazing

It's really good but I think the storyline needs a bit of work. It's fine, but I think it's not as good as the pilot by far
To be honest, I feel like some of the scenes need to be shorter and there needs more shock humor and subverted expectations.

I just watched Smiling Friends and was wondering where this episode was, I had completely forgotten it was a fan episode.
Honestly, this. My mind fleshed it out more that it being a storyboard, too. But it really feels like it belongs.
The fucking "Im a sputhern boy and we do things a little bit differently" line is gold. Thats some really good attention to detail, its believable that zach would use some lines from oneyplays like that
Watching this after the first season dropped on Adult Swim. It’s insane how much of the shows sense of humor and creativity you nailed.
Wow, miles better than I expected. I like how you continued Pim's depressive state from the first episode, and how you connected both plots together. The jokes felt super fitting and natural so great job there too. Though I felt like the writing for Charlie was a little too upbeat? Though he was picking up the slack for Pim being down so I kind of get it.
Overall, super cool writing and storyboarding, you really did a kick ass job. I hope this lands you some sort of storyboarding job because you for sure have the skill for it.
@Clay Puppyton He seemed more like a slacker towards the beginning of the pilot episode because Desmond was walking around with a .44 to his head all day. That doesn’t exactly strike confidence in the thought that you’ll make him smile.

Yeah I feel like with Pim out of commission Charlie would probably be the one to step up and be more peppy.
Charlie's character could probably stand to be a but more apathetic during the job, character wise, but its amazingly well written. I keep thinking back to this as an official episode only to remind myself it was a fan animatic.
I love how you imitated how Charlie talks but not specifically how he sounds.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, the character dynamics felt so natural I love how Gleb looks after Alan lol. imo you nailed the spirit of the original despite only having a pilot to work with, this is really impressive and I hope Zach sees it!
Thank you so much! I also really like the Gleb and Alan dynamic. The scenes featuring them were my favorites to work on. As for Zach, both he and Michael liked a tweet of mine linking to this video, so I know they're both aware of it. I've heard that sometimes creators are forbidden from viewing fan works so they don't accidentally steal any ideas, so who knows if they've actually watched it or not. Either way, I'm glad the fan base is reacting positively to it.

I love the Alan B-plot, really feels like it could've been in the show. With some finishing touches to the storyline even the A plot seems solid.

I think you captured a lot of the humor from the pilot episode, and I could definitely see Zach making those types of jokes and characters. As a fan project this is amazing and spot on.
You can really tell how not just anybody can make a Smiling Friends episode by watching this. Spellcaster tries to follow the "formula" of the pilot, but not a single other episode was like the pilot. They all did things differently - and that's one of the reasons why its so great.
You're absolutely right, but to be fair, only the pilot existed when I made this. I didn't realize how much variety the final show would have.

I like how this follows the narrative structure of original episode, but because we are seeing a different Smiling Friend having a rough go of it, we get to see more character and motivation behind our Smiling Friends.
I love Allan so much, so his prominence and portrayal here made me really happy. (,,^^,,) Really great work.

I loved the bizarre pacing and character design, you really did a great job mimicking the vibe of the pilot and if you showed me this out of context I would have though it was episode 2 leaked. though the B plot could have been a bit weirder felt too normal if that makes any sense. Though Alan crashing at the end really made it for me.

I appreciate that rather than doing some lame Hadel voice you tried to just deliver the lines with the same cadence and tone as charlie but your aussie accent could use a little work, you sound like pip from south park.

This was really phenomenal and pretty true to Zach and Michaels vision of this show. I especially love the ending scene since it really felt like an episodic end to an episode since it's likely the next episode would have Alan be totally ok in the next episode. It really got me with the similar fast paced panic like in the pilots ending
This was actually well crafted and everything. Huge major props
For a fan animatic that only had the pilot to go off of, there’s surprisingly a few elements that aren’t too far off from a real episode. My biggest criticism would be the slower pacing (I feel bumping the speed to 1.25x gives a better emulation of the show) and being too grounded. There were very fairly few jokes and you could definitely feel the abscence of wacky creatures.
That being said, I don’t think it would take too much to rework this into something much more accurate. Caffeinated Alan could be a lot more animalistic and destructive, maybe instead of him stealing the orange juice someone could splash it on his face to find out they’ve been laced. The premise for the antagonist also feels pretty authentic, though maybe he could have a more active role than passively letting Charlie and Pim fail. Overall, I think this is an interesting time capsule and there’s definitely some concepts here that could be revisited.
True, they did a pretty good job capturing some aspects of the actual show before it actually released. That ending for sure is something that would’ve been done in the current Smiling Friends.
Those are all totally valid criticisms! I've said it before when responding to comments, but I definitely focused more on the plot structure than on jokes during the writing process, and it shows in the final product. If I were to go back and change anything in this project, punching up the wackiness and having snappier pacing would be my first changes. Thanks for your comment!

This definitely scratched my itch for more smiling friends, this felt so close to another episode it's scary, if you don't get to work on the team then there is no justice in the world

The sound design in this is genuinely so good too?? Like everyone is complimenting your wonderful art and the composition and the humor (as they SHOULD!!!) but also your sound design is really nice!! You honestly do the voices quite well, and the background chatter in the cafeteria was so immersive and sounded so nice... I loved this whole thing start to finish, totally incredible!

It's so interesting to see that this was made after the pilot and before the first season released. Like it's way off to what the show is but I can't really blame you because you didn't know back then, lol. Idunno, I find it cool to only using the pilot as the jumping off point and assuming what it *might* be like. It's like a time capsule in a way.
I understand why you probably won't do one in the immediate future but it'd be cool to see you tackle another "fan" episode with the knowledge of what the show is actually like
