    Thanks for your useful lecture .Here is my homework :
    It is Mr Andrew who /that teaches grammar the best on TH-cam .
    What I don't like when attending your lessons is the writing is dim.

      Dear Andrew ! The reason why I made 2 mistakes is that your writing is dim .

    Hi Andrew, the more I learn English , the more I find how flexible English is.
    There are many ways of writing we can use to write the same meaning.
    It doesn't matter what the name of a way is, because some teachers call, for example " what I hate the most is studying" a noun clause.
    As a non-native English speaker I sometimes get confused wether I should infinitive or relative clause.
    For example
    What is the difference between these two sentences:
    Armstrong was the first man to land on the moon.
    Armstrong was the first man who landed on the moon.
    I know that the first one is acceptable, but not sure about the second one
    Do we use the infinitive form when we the subject is identified?
    I always notice that with " the first one or the first anything" we use the infinitive form.

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Nawar Nawar, both of your sentences would be grammatically correct, but as you identified, the infinitive form would be the much more natural way in this case.

    Good evening. Thanks a million for this useful explanation. I would like to mention that there might be a mistake in one of the examples: What I enjoyed the most about the Broadway musical was the performances. I was told that the verb to be in the cleft sentence is to agree with the complement. The complement in this case is plural. So the correct stament could be: What I enjoyed the most about the Broadway musical WERE the performances. Please let me know your opinion on this. Warm regards

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a grammar point that is usually taught in higher level or advanced classes. As you can tell, a lot of other grammar has to be mastered first before one can tackle this structure. Personally, I think it's a great and very useful and natural structure for emphasizing things.

    It will be very good if you do a video about Adjektiv with Ed and ing and about how to turn verbs into adjectives for example hide =hidden.
    And I will very happy if you teach us some metaphors 😍😍😍😍😘❤️

    I'd like to ask how to turn future sentences into the It-cleft and Wh- cleft.
    EX: My dad will come home next month.
    It cleft: It is next month that my dad will come home OR It will be next month that my dad comes home ?
    Wh-cleft: When my dad will come home is next month. OR When my dad comes home will be next month ?
    Which of the sentences above are correct? Thanks!

      @mapleleafesl6162  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jessica, basically both of your 'it' examples are fine. As for your 'wh' examples, the second one is the better one but both do work. The first one just sounds a little uncommon.

      Hi Sanaya Sethi, that's a lot to answer in a comment section. But to be brief: 1) Could you please move your legs? 2) Did I keep you waiting long? 3) They are trying to snare/catch me in their trap. 4) The shopkeeper always tries to persuade us to buy his stuff. Hope this helps!

    Hi Andrew... Why do you use the word "that" instead of "when" in the sentence...... "It was last weekend THAT my friend got a pet cat from Mrs. Smith". Thank you !

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose both 'that' and 'when' could work in that sentence, though 'that' feels more natural to me.

    Thank you for this super helpful lesson! Can you please help me apply pseudo clefting on this sentence:
    The student said he would pass the exam on Monday. Apparently, this sentence has 2 interpretations.. and we should be able to do 2 pseudo clefting tests to show the two interpretations have a different constituent structure..
    I did the first one but I can’t do the second one: what the student said he would pass was the exam on Monday. Can you please help with the second interpretation!

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be that he said it on Monday in the past, or it could be that he will do it at the exam on Monday, which is in the future.

    how do i distinguish cleft sentences from extraposition though? :(

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  ปีที่แล้ว

      With Extraposition, the sentence almost always starts with 'it' and the subject is moved to the end. With cleft sentences, we can start them with 'what', 'where' or other subjects.
