      It is because of the experience in ww1. The Germans believed if they continued the fight after they won the east front they would have won the ww1 in the west with new troops but got backstabbed by politics. “Dolchstoß legende” like the mighty Siegfried. So they truly thought they have to fight to the end. Fight for your lost comrades.

    Although the caption says 31 December 1944, this was obviously filmed several months before that date.There are plenty of leaves on the trees, indicating a time earlier in the year. Also, there is footage of Panzer Ace, Michael Wittmann, who was killed on the 8th of August 1944. Therefore, this footage was probably taken a few weeks after D-Day.

    • @czwarty7878
      @czwarty7878 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I think it's error of description, on AP Archive site there are multiple videos that are dated 31 december 0:00 AM of various years. Maybe they couldn't find proper dates, maybe archive only listed the videos by the year or something, that would be my guess. I doubt they would release that Normandy footage on 31 december when more recent offensives that gave "new hope" took place. And while of course back then gaining footage and linking it into one film took time, another Deutsche Wochenshau about operation Wacht am Rhein is dated for 16 january 1945, so only 2 weeks after. So I think this video could be dated for some few weeks after 15-17 June 1944, judging by the footage of SS Tigers combat.

    • @czwarty7878
      @czwarty7878 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@lynskyn2 not really, they had just enough action for some recordings. Allies had air superiority but it doesn't mean entire sky became a no-fly zone for Luftwaffe, they were just told to stay away from allied fighters unless the latter were at severe disadvantage; some few jabo missions still were active. Few fighters strafed the beaches on 6th june, some FW190s attacked ships with rockets, Ju88s also were carrying out bombings and mining missions, also the airborne before Carentan were bombed by german jabos. So it's just enough for recording something for propaganda... And that's about it.

      This film actually wasnt so full of propaganda as others of that era. They are pretty much being honest about crisis and struggle!
      Footage was often reused though and used out of context to create more of an action clip instead of actual footage like you got from the afghanistan war. It was more or less all staged and shot in the breaks from combat. Soldiers throwing grenades etc there was never an enemy near.
      When the fighting went down the photographers had diners in berlin and were celebrated for their great footage . They went back when fighting was over to shoot nice new propaganda later with the survivors of the real battle. Also they only shot the armored vehicles while in reality german military equipment was 80% moved by horses. And they still had kavalry units at beginning of the war where the noble would be in and stuff. Wild time!

      @andrew chambers i am not sure why you brought this completely unrelated point, but I generally agree with you. Allies should've treated Germany in less harsh terms after WWI and, it's EXACTLY what US had advocated but France and Britain wanted draconian measures imposed. Though, you have to also remember that these measures were a direct result of similar measures that Prussia imposed on France after Franco-Prussian war just a few decades earlier. There is no "poor Germany" argument here.
