  • The Dymanic Duo are back for another hike and wild camp. This time in the Cairngorms. We set off from Linn of Dee to do the two Munros; Beinn Bhrotain & Monadh Mor. Later on we find a breezy lochside camp in the shadow of the mighty Cairn Toul.

    Nice to see you both out and about and enjoying a long anticipated wrap o'clock. Great video and yep you need that guy line putting on! Or ear plugs? Sleeping bag recommendation I use the Thermarest Parsec 20. Light, hydrophobic down, packs small and under a kg. Just shop around as the price varies massively from shop to shop. I checked prior to writing this and Amazon were the most expensive but I paid just shy of £300 but it's available for £270

    Looks like you could have done with the Helm that night! You getting on with the compact 1 ok? If you fancy saving some pennies, I took a gamble on Vango’s new Cobra 200 which paid off. I paid £110 for mine. had to finish off a few stitches but it’s a very good value down bag that weighs 700g and is a 2° comfort with a -4° limit. I’ve made a synthetic quilt to go over the top in winter to push the dew point out a bit and up the warmth and now my winter sleep system weighs less than my old winter bag. I’ve only had the chance to test it around the 0-2° mark and without the quilt I’ve never slept better in years of using high end equipment. It was a very wet night but had no condensation issues. I think knowing what temp range suits you is the key. I’m a warm sleeper and anything below a -6 comfort in winter cooks me alive and wets out. Good luck with your search!

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've only used the Helm Compact once since buying it, will use it more when the colder weather arrives. It would have bossed that wind though.
      I bought a PHD sleeping bag a few weeks ago in the sale, waiting on it being delivered still. Takes 6-8 weeks. Good to - 6°c apparently. I like the idea of a synthetic quilt to use in winter rather than having a separate sleeping bag.

    • @lewissaundersguitar
      @lewissaundersguitar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walk With Wallace 👣 That PHD bag will be worth every penny. I was toying between making my own or going to PHD or UGQ. The Vango solved the problem cheaply as I’m after a more winter suited tent. Truthfully, I want a Scarp but they’re pricey to import so I keep tempting myself with the Helm 1 and pushing it a bit in winter. It’s good to see other doing well with it!

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lewissaundersguitar PHD have a great reputation, the one I've ordered only has a half zip, but I'm cool with that.
      I was tempted with a quilt for ages, like yourself either UGQ or Enlightened Equipment. Also going down the synthetic route with Valley & Peak. I came to the conclusion being a restless sleeper, I didn't want drafts and never had an issues with sleeping bags.
      Scarp 1 would be a class 4 season tent imo. I'm put off import taxes, although I was lucky with the Trailstar.
      I reckon the Helm will handle winter fine, I'll maybe by some of those Delta pegs though for peace of mind.

    • @lewissaundersguitar
      @lewissaundersguitar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walk With Wallace 👣 It’ll most certainly live up to it as well! I understand your restlessness, I’m the same, that’s why I put the quilt over a bag. Can move around all I want and it stays over me. Can’t be doing with faff in the cold! Will look forward to seeing how you get on with your PHD, it should see you through nicely! I’m going to have a lot of explaining to the Mrs if I go for the Scarp but I think the Helm might slip under the radar 😁 luckily for my wallet they’re both out of stock!

      Cheers D&L, aye it was a bit rough heading off from the loch, but not too bad overall. 😁
      Yeah, I marked the fill line on the back of the packet too, but find sometimes you can add too much or too little water as it absorbs quickly into the food. I boiled slightly more than 300ml to account for evaporation and it was perfect. 👌🏼 I don't think I'll bother with the fill lines now. 🤔
      Looking forward to your Glen Tilt video BTW, I've got some plans to visit at some point for a through hike.

    Interesting that you came down Glen Geusachan. I was told 20 odd years ago by an experienced walker 'never, ever go down that glen as it's horrible' and I never did, but it looked ok in your video. I did these after a night camping beside Corour bothy and my wee photo was taken on the way over to the lochan you camped beside so that tells you what sort a day it was. I never found the path down to Glen Dee either and stumbled through all sorts to get down. Perhaps Glen Geusachan would have been better. I also added some grip clips by Gram counter from Ultralight outdoor gear on the largest panel to add some support there, works a charm.
