    As a producer having learnt these lessons myself the hard way over the last 12+ years, trust me guys this dude knows his stuff.
    Really great insights and very important info for new producers/working musicians.

    I listened to the entire video and I totally agree that people get lost in looking for plugins and knowledge and forget to make music. I did the same thing over and over again. Some of the most successful people out there have the crappiest music ever but they have build a brand and connections. Certainly they have the ability to sell their brand.

    I'm getting my first MIDI controler in a few days (61 keys, the bigger the better I assumed) have no idea what DAW I will use (never used a DAW before) but thinking about Ableton because it seems to be the norm. What moves me is a tremendous passion for bonechilling melodic/ hypnotic techno dance music (for some reason, I already know that my bpm will be 128-130). I have a long history of not finishing things but I hope this passion will keep me going until I'm able to produce the tracks that I envision now. I know it's hardwork and perseverance and I've been postponing this for a while now but I'm 27 and feel like this is the time. Wish me luck!

    About 8 years ago, i ripped that video to mp3 for later and randomly listened to it in my car. I think some of the stuff you talk about is the reason I kept persistent at producing and prevented me from quitting a few times. I now realize this 14mn48sec was behind so many of my accomplishments, getting gigs, big editorial playlist placements and signing to dream labels in the deephouse/melodic/prog scene. Thanks ❤

    Brother, you have a bottom line, straight to the point, logical thought process that is very rare. I can dig it. My favorites are the individuals that feel you HAVE to know how to play every instrument for that instrument to be present in your work. The peak state is nuts also, especially being in the military (particual jobs), having a wife, and all of the available tech around me!!! Good listen. Thanks.

    Brilliant stuff. There's a severe lack of wisdom out there as far as the mental side of production and I'm glad you're here dropping truth bombs on us. People scramble for conventional production advice but don't always realize that mentality presupposes EVERYTHING, especially in creative endeavors. Will be buying your book once I'm not completely broke.

    Great video. I agree with what he said about misery not being necessary for creating good music, but I wanted to comment that for me, my internal struggles, my pain and suffering, or just my internal battles in general, direct me to create things that I think only can come from the depths ive met. Not to say that knowing these dark places makes me a dark person, I am not, I am quite the opposite, but knowing those dark places makes me more dynamic. I've met with people who don't know that side and it made creating with them more difficult. If you can know the darkness and the light, it makes for a much better life and creation.

    The 10th point was always my problem. It was so intensiv that I have download no samples at all because I thought I need to make them all myself. I stoped it for now and hope it is getting better for now. The only good thing is that I am good at sound design now but truly I would like to have spend more time on the music itself. I am a producer for 8 years with no success at all. I made nearly zero money. But from now on I hope it changes!

  • @DD-sw1dd
    @DD-sw1dd 9 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Very very good stuff.
    Throughout our lives we've been taught a certain way to learn growing up. But it's not very effective. Trust me it's what I tried to do. I focused heavily on learning all I could about producing the music I wanted to make. In fact in the end there were barely any TH-cam tutorials I didn't instantly recognize when reading the title bc I had watched them constantly....I also bought and read books and dedicated music production IOS apps to help me learn.
    In the end I had a lot of knowledge and could answer questions easily (u know...like u would on a test in school) and I probably seemed to be a good producer based on my knowledge.....but I couldn't finish a track to save my life. In fact I struggled to even get past the brainstorming phase bc I spent 90% of my time on learning ABOUT production instead of simply doing it.
    In my experience it takes 10x more discipline to open your DAW and work on music everyday than it does to watch tutorials and read books about production. Hardest part is simply getting yourself to sit down and DO IT. You always feel overwhelmed regardless of your book knowledge bc your still inexperienced.

      So true... I'm an educated Sounddesigner. But even this didn't help to come out of this "i need to know more stuff"-thing. For any question i get answered, two new questions come up. And this book now helps me a lot now, to figure out, what my problem really is and to face is. It's clearly a psychological thing and i wasn't aware of that before. This book is awesome. 100% true speak.

    The longer I produce, the less I use. At first I threw up to 10 plug-ins on every track and I made up to 50 tracks + in one session. Now I often use one or two plug-ins, usually a daw intern compressor and a simple eq, and sometimes hall or a delay or a saturation or a stereo enhancer. And yes, sometimes a deesser. And I try to stay under 30 tracks. For mastering I use emastered with a reference track, and usually that sounds amazing. I don't even take time for gain staging. Just produce, and than put the volume down.
