Where the hell are today's Steely Dan, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Stones, Who, Guess Who, Eagles, Journey, Genesis, Kiss, Eddie Money, etc., etc., etc. Just so soulful, so emotional, so amazing.
Yep, yet they fired him, they didn't want to share the wealth and fame with Palmer. He was able to sue Fagen and Becker years later for Royalties due him and from what I understand it was substantial.

This song reminds me of my late HS roommate. In 1989 I got sent to boarding school was having way to much fun in Public school and My Bronx father was at his wits end. My roommate was the biggest Dead Head. This song was playing when I walked in from Football Practice and met him RiP Eggy I miss you brother.
Of Steely Dan, I first heard "Do It Again". It wasn't lightning. Then "Reeling In The Years" was close to lightning. Then I heard this by accident, and I thought "I've got to get that album". This song was truly lightning for me, and I never get tired of it. I wish he were still singing.
I was 4 when this tune was released. My parents partied with it during the hippie 70's. I remember this tune being played during many parties. Loads of childhood memories .
Mine was a little different.....riding in dad's 1968 nova in 1993-1995 every Friday and Sunday going to work with him.....then taking his cassettes with in the locomotive or caboose....he used to ask me what I wanted to listen too....this was first pick.
I went on a first date in 1994 to see these guys. I fell madly in love and now 26 years later I am married to that man. It's out 16th anniversary today.
Kathy, I'm 66. This is in my personal TH-cam favorites, an eclectic mix. But here's the deal: I like it as much now as I did when I first heard it, I think around age 24.
@@oldwest517 I wonder what Rolling Stone Magazine meant by oversinging because I think this lead singer is excellent and I love this song. I was never familiar with Steely Dan but I am really impressed with this song.
There was a lot of competition in the band in the early days. Robert Palmer had a great voice which he proved when he sang Dirty Work. It appeared Donald Fagen and Walter Becker wanted to cement themselves as the band leaders / owners and removed Palmer to avoid future competition and royalty suits. I love the band and aside from Fagen and Becker firing Palmer for no reason other than a cash grab they will always be on the top best of my music library.
I remember seeing the original Steely Dan perform this on The Midnight Special in early 1973 with lead vocal from David Palmer rather than Fagen although it was Fagen who had made the band famous with Do It Again. Not a unique situation: the original Byrds started out with Gene Clark as vocalist/tambourine player and yet Roger McGuinn was singing lead on most of the songs including all the hits.
The more I listen to this song, the more I realize that its secret sauce is Skunk's sweet, subtle guitar work ever lurking in the background. It is like the song's subconscious mind.
@@hammerthor6441 Skunk before the Doobies, as I recall. He was a band member of SD in the brief period when they actually had a band rather than just being a studio project,
I've just been to see the Dan at Manchester arena. This is one of my favourite tracks by them BUT they have the backing Danette's singing this and it's totally lost its way with them . This is a guys song as the men amongst know exactly what this song means 😉
Think it's time for us 45 year old plus geezers to teach and not complain. Complaining is easy teaching kinda tougher. With music, doesn't have to be blatant Rap crap overt.
Damn, some kid working out with his girlfriend at the gym had this song playing and I was gonna ask him if he’s seen The Sopranos but now from reading the comments it was probably from The Suicide Squad trailer that apparently featured this song.
one of my fave tracks off Cant buy a thrill. Fun Facf: Kenny Rogers released a cover of this song with his then band the first edition long before he had his long & successful solo career.
I saw S Dan a few (5-6) years ago in Dallas. First time attending their show. It was very disappointing. Becker got up and read some deal thanking everyone on their staff including accounts and roadies. I’ll bet it literally took 10 minutes. Fagan was just ok. On this song, “Dirty Work”, their best number imo, they had only the backup singers do it. Thank God their opening act shined, Steve Winwood. His 45 min set was great as always. It was hard to believe tickets went fit so much. The crowd was on their hands most of the SD set. Oh well I can say I did see them. In my 10 point system. 10 being the best, I have Winwood a 9. SD gets a 4.
I said the same thing years ago ( Becker did that same crap plus performed one of his boring songs) when I seen them live & they didn't perform the commercial hits I'd come accustomed to hearing over the years. They did some of the B side stuff and old tunes I wasn't familiar with. They've been around a hundred years seems like ...lol 😆
