- Hi All,
This very rare and especially melodious ghazal is for all Mehdi Hassan fans out there in the world! It's one of my all time favorites. Making it even more magical is Tari Khan Sahib who provides tabla accompaniment of the highest order. Aren't these two just the best combination ever in a live ghazal? Sure is hard to argue but let me know what you think.
b.t.w. I don't get much time to post so I totally appreciate my friends out there who are making it happen by posting simply incredible & rare items. If it weren't for YOU, we'd all be so much less fulfilled today because this treasure would essentially be isolated and/or lost. मेरी तरह सर-ए-महफ़िल उदास था वो भी
किसी ने हाल जो पुछा तो रो दिआ वो भी
[सर-ए-महफ़िल = at the gathering/merriment ]
नया नया था हमें भी जूनून परस्तिश का
बना हुआ था सर-ऐ-अंजुमन खुदा वो वो भी
[ जूनून = madness, परस्तिश = worship, सर-ऐ-अंजुमन = at congregation]
हवा-ए-शाम की जिस से शिकायतें की थी
चराग-ए-बाम-ए-तमन्ना बुझा गया वो भी
[ चराग-ए-बाम-ए-तमन्ना = light(hope) at the terrace(heights) of desire]
रिफ़ाक़तों का सिला ये भी कम नहीं 'तश्ना'
हमारा नाम जब आया तो हँस पड़ा वो भी
[ रिफ़ाक़तों का सिला = result of closeness/friendship, ]

The audience doesn't realize their good fortune to hear him live. Pains me to see him quietening them at 8:15. "Woh khaab toot gaya jo main dekh raha tha" implies our loss not his.

Astonishing breath control.In one of his interview he spilled the beans,he told the interviewer that he is also a pehlwan who did 1000 each dand baithak.
No epithet is sufficient to describe this multidimensional talent! Infact, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was Back, Beethoven and Mozart rolled into one ! The Illustrious career of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab spanning over almost six decades speaks volumes about his abilities as a singer of exceptional merit proving his worth in every aspect of Hindustani Classical Music -- be it Khayal, Thumri, Ghazal, or Playback Singing in Films ! Professionalism, Perfection and Sophistication in performance was the hallmark of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab ! The style of gayiki of the great Khan Saab was very simple, effortless but overbearing and difficult to emulate ! Besides, he had something divine in his voice which made him so special ! It may not be out of place to mention here that the great Lata Mangeshkar held the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in very high esteem and used to say -- " GOD resides in the voice of Mehdi Hassan Saab! " Perhaps, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab was absolutely right in his assessment that no one else can ever compete with Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over Sur is concerned ! In this ghazal, the great Khan Saab and Ustad Tari Khan Saab had complemented and suplemented each other very well ! Hat's off to both of these stalwarts for this beautiful bandish ! Mehdi Khan saab was gift for Allah, God, and Eshwar. I fell lucky that I got two chances to listen him live. Such a humble and down to earth person he was.

with due to respect to the talent of tari khan sahab, he tends to get haavi on the singer. I have noticed in few of his other programs also where he has accompanied mehdi sahab, he goes ovrboard in displaying his prowess. a tabalchi must always follow the singer and not try and overshadow him. just an opinion
I believe, Khan Saheb allowed him to go a bit overboard but maza aagaya.
Saab. No one can dare even to touch Mehdi Hassan. Tari Khan is merely paying respect to the greatest voice of Indian music.
But did you notice that Khan Saab is enjoying and appritiating Tari Khan's talent. It was impossible to confuse Khan Saab for any tabla player. By the way Tari Khan is a big fan and admirer of Mehdi Saab.
He is not overshadowing him but complementing the ghazal. Ustad Tari is allowing Khansahib Mehdi to lead and compliments the song with few variations. Ustad Tari reads Khansahib's cues, body language, and facial expressions and only then does he play intricate laggis and tihais. With Khansahib's expertise, Ustad Tari is free to play intricate yet understandable rhythms. This is exactly what a Tabla player is supposed to do to help elevate the singer's performance. This is a sign of a true maestro.
