The Autonomous Region of Bougainville is a group of islands currently a part of Papua New Guinea.
Bougainville will hold an independence referendum to decide wether to become a seperate sovereign state from Papua New Guinea in November 2019.
However the Bougainville Independence Referendum will be non-binding, so it is unclear what will happen if independence from Papua New Guinea is voted for.
Find out a brief overview of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and why the AROB is holding a referendum on independence from Papua New Guinea.

And though a lot of us Papua New Guineans will miss our AROB relatives if the wished outcome becomes reality, we do know that they have the right to decide. Besides, it's their land. OK, Bougainville voted for independence, but that does not mean that we will have our 194th UN member state - at least not yet. It should take time before both the PNG and Bougainville's regional governments agree upon the transition of the region, as well as creating a new constitution, but also the possibility for holding ANOTHER referendum - this time about joining the Solomon Islands. But I think Bougainville would want to be independent, because if they wanted to join the neighboouring Solomon Islands the referendum would've had 3 options anyway - independence, staying in PNG or joining the Solomon Islands. And besides, the Solomon Islands Archipelago is ethically diverse and was that way for millenia. Even in the Solomon Islands state itself there was an armed conflict in the late 90's-early 00's between the various ethnical groups.
An Independent Bougainville would be around the same size as Cyprus (de jure) and the US territory of Puerto Rico. Population wise it will be slightly less than Vanuatu, but more than Barbados. But even after achieving independence, Bougainville will still be one of the poorest countries in the wolrd, relying hevilly on investments from abroad - Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and China

All people's deserve the right to be self governing and not oppressed by more powerful states.
The Australian,Ian government and Australian mining company Rio Tinto caused the deaths of twenty thousand people of Bougainville.
Bougainville is part of the Solomon Islands Group and New Guinea should have no claim over it.
This problem stems from Colonial Times when Germany claimed Sovereignty over number of lands and islands in the region .
Australia was tasked with the responsibility of guiding and assisting New Guinea toward self government.
The Netherlands had promised to assist West Papua to do the same.
Both of these countries are cursed with mineral wealth.
Without the mines they would not be so attractive to powerful and greedy governments.
The Netherlands were typically disinterested in helping ant the Australian government is corrupted by wealthy shareholders and very frightened of Indonesia.
I am very lucky to be an Australian Citizen but I am ashamed of the apathy of my countrymen and ashamed of my democratically elected government.

Well, look at Nauru. Nauru had some of the world's biggest and richest guano (phosphates) deposits, but mismanagement by its politicians of the wealth derived from guano has left Nauru virtually bankrupt today. Other smaller Pacific Islands are also facing economic problems with no significant revenue-generating industries and high unemployment rates. Maybe Bougainville copper is good for one or two generations of Bougainvilleans; certainly the ones who are screaming for independence now will benefit. But what happens WHEN the copper runs out? Copra and cocoa? They've had copra and cocoa since the German New Guinea days till now with little to show for it despite over a hundred years of copra and cocoa on Bougainville; what difference will another hundred years make after the copper runs out? Even if they get independence, the Panguna landowners where all that copper sits may have their own plans which may conflict with the new government's economic aspirations. Anyway, only time will tell. All the best, Bougainville.

Nauru on the other hand did not face a 10 year civil war with its Government.. Or endure a 10 year blockade . Bougainville has gone through alot and trust me they are in a much better position to manage their own affairs more than ever.

    Some basic questions.
What kind of economy do they have now in place to sustain n gurantee their separation n independence.?
What is the currency going to be like.?
Is the currency they will be using stronger then other currencies like AUS/US and PNG Kina.etc.. ?
From what I know, Francis Ona and his tribesmen fought for more benifits for Bougainvilians from the Copper mine... Never intended for Independence and Sam Kauna and the other tribesmen used that situation to assit Francis Ona and wanted Independence..These two factions are still at odes as we speak but silently.
Note that the mine is a non renewal resource and one day it will run out.... Independence based on such foundation will not last. Look around the world today... There are many countries who fought to have such indrpendence for theselves so they can manage their own resources but yet are still struggling today... Leaders who fought to get the Idependence have become wealthy with their cronies at the expence of the people.
My hope is for them to stay Automous untill such a time when they have created a good economy that can propel them forward.. Just my thoughts.

Great video - thank you. While every people deserve self determination - does Bvl have the populational "depth" and skill to run its own affairs properly and honestly (without corruption) or will it be the new fledgling state taken advantage of by local thugs or larger players in the area? (Indonesia, PRChina, USA, etc)
Independence hasn't worked out well for Nauru and some other small "coral reefs with flags" in the Pacific for that reason. If they become independent the best thing they could do would be to establish relations with Taiwan.

It would be hard considering that you'll need to put a fight with Indonesian government which is the strongest military in the southeast asia. Not to mention that the current defense minister of Indonesia is a controversial ex general who is believed to be involved in series of disappearance, military violences, and human right abuses in the region during the 90s. Furthermore, the Indonesian govt has been investing large sum of moneys to Papua since 5 years ago through numerous development programs (such as the 1,000km-long national road and youtefa bridge construction, the single-price for petrol and the sea toll road program, and the rejuvenation of the road, security posts, and traditional markets in border areas). I doubt that they would just let the billions amount of dollar they spent reaps nothing. If a huge riot were to broke out, blood sheds would surely follow
