Tie-dye pattern : Queens Mandala (H.W.I.)

- Today I am demonstrating how to tie-dye a queens mandala pattern using the h.w.i. (hot water irrigation) method. This is a step by step tie-dye tutorial video where we cover the entire process starting with the folding and drawing of our queens mandala outline pattern on the shirt. Then we tie up the shirt using sinew and apply our procion dye to the shirt, and to finish up we apply our hot water spray to the shirt using a garden pump sprayer, give it a good rinse, and jump right on into the reveal of our new queens mandala tie-dye t-shirt. wow awesome just awesome...when did you add the soda ash? n does it take more dye when u use it in the powder form..Don,t the dyes need salt..so confusing...thanks for sharing
You’re very welcome and I soak all of my materials in soda ash and water before spinning out in the washer and tying up damp. The dyes don’t need need salt at all... the soda ash is a dye fixative that allows for the dyes to bond with the fabric. I hope this helps😊💕💜

Hi and thank you for your compliment and question. Unfortunately I do not but I can explain it. So basically if the water is hot enough (160-200 degrees) the heat instantly binds the procion dye to the fabric. You still need soda ash to allow for the chemical bonding to hold but with the water at that temperature it happens immediately. The spray bottle is for a light mist of the water at that temperature and to keep the the dye pattern from spreading, the garden pump sprayer is how you saturate the material to allow the dye to completely soak through the material. Letting it sit for 10-15 minutes just ensures of the saturation. I hope this helps😊
You center your shirt completely different than I do. It has got me thinking. I suffer from trypophobia . It’s insane really. Angie, just did one one these recently. It looks very much like a lotus flower seed pod. Everything is beautiful. I can’t look too long because I get weird. I watched a frog give birth from her back and I’ve struggled ever since. I love coral pink. I need to use it more. 🥰❤️🌈
I’m sorry to hear that. I actually just heard of trypophobia for the first time a few weeks ago. It sounds like it could be difficult to deal with with certain Tie dye patterns. I really love the coral pink as well. It seems to get dominated by so many other colors though I try to be very careful when using it but this one turned out even better than I expected. BTW your wig wag variation was super awesome! I seen all that lime pop and gasped 😂💚💚💚💜💖

Hey Riah. Just wanted to say thanks. I've learned a lot from your videos. Do you ever mix your dye with soda ash, or do you use your dye straight from the jar? Cheers lovely work!!
Hi and thank you so much! I actually never mix my dye with soda ash. I soak my material in soda ash for 20 minutes before spinning out in the washer and tying up damp. If I ice dye or do hwi I may sprinkle soda ash on top of the dye as well but I never add it to my liquid. I hope this helps😊💙💚

Riah beautiful job must get coral pink immediately.for about a year i did hwi by mixing soda ash with dye powder. i had constant problems with saturation. then i started doing it like you do. i wonder if you ever mixed the two together and if you did did you have saturation issues? as a advanced dyer i appreciate your channel so much because i am learning again! thank you sooo much!
Thank you so much! I actually haven’t mixed the two together…I was told that it makes it easier for dye placement but i have never actually wanted to try it that way. And the saturation can be tricky. I don’t think the soda ash has to do with that but it’s a possibility. Most of the time your water might not be hot enough or your not putting enough water on it. Just keep trying different methods ☺️ that’s the best way to troubleshoot ❤️❤️❤️
Can you tell me what spray nozzle is set to during the HWI? Like, is it set to jet or is it a wider spray? It’s hard to tell during the videos.

Whats the benefit to this method compared to wet die?
It’s actually referred to as the 1 hour tie dye method. It’s a lot faster and the colors stay bright ☺️
