I think this is so sad he should've spoken up. But this is why you don't treat people like belongings you can leave to your significant others in your will. He worked for that man his entire life he probably was ready to retire. He lost it when he heard this indentured slavery isnt over, he should have walked away.

Almost every murder case that happened in Canada just stuns me when the punishment is revealed. There was a man who attempted to murder an ex girlfriend by stabbing her 22 times in her bed then sat on the stairs waiting on the police who he told not to waste their time rushing bc he made sure to finish her off bc he stabbed her in vital places on the body but she miraculously survived and he was only sentenced to 8 yrs and only served 3 yrs for a gruesome attempted murder. Fast forward 15 yrs later, that same man had two live in girlfriends who he had multiple children with both women and none of them had jobs and lived off of the Canadian government getting free housing, utilities, food, etc. I can’t remember exactly how many children they all had but one of the girlfriends took her kids and left the situation thankfully bc he and the other girlfriend hatched a plan, with the help of his close friend, to defraud the government by setting the house on fire in order to get renters insurance they had only recently purchased and so they could move into a much bigger & better house for free bc they had already been denied their request to move by the housing authority. So they decided to cause the house to catch on fire and they made sure to set it in a location where they couldn’t get to their kids from inside the house & had already placed a ladder outside of the kids room before setting the blaze. They thought that by blocking the entry to the children inside the house & then rescuing the children by going thru their windows would make it much easier to convince everyone the fire was not set intentionally. The plan backfired on them and even though they immediately went straight to the ladder it was too late. The fire spread very rapidly and the children were stuck in their room with no way out and burned to death, there were 5 or 6 little ones who were helpless & suffered an agonizing death. They really had not meant for their children to die but that does not matter at all. He was found Guilty of arson & multiple counts of murder and was only sentenced to 16 yrs in prison!!!! He served 3 yrs for stabbing & attempting to murder a former girlfriend then he kills his children and only got 16 yrs!! They took into consideration that he hadn’t intended on his kids to die but that should not have mattered even a little

That's the problem with chronic alcoholics. They can't be trusted to stay sober enough to carry out even their own plans effectively. The servant had a multitude of options for a successful concealed murder. With both Muriel's age & alcoholism, as well as that kind that trip(ship or in port excursions) it left many relatively easy options. Though with murder in mind, super intoxicated, the drunk may react in frustration, "I'll kill her now!" So just bashes her head in and then he passes out....and next he gets sprung!
In a way Muriel had it coming, overly wealthy & entitled. Plus her own alcoholism making her insensitive to her servant, becoming more increasingly demanding and needy. The servant increasingly alcoholic, gets more selfish too, hence loosing the obliging patience of the past. This pair together were a disaster waiting to happen. He ought to have been given murder 2, with the most minimum time and subtracting the years spent with Muriel as time served!

Maybe to illustrate there are no other immediate inheritors, but her. I think when something is in the will one feels obliged to stay on even if they wanted to leave. I've seen people being forced to do things they otherwise wouldn't do as long as it's the departed's will.

These episodes are like eating Hershey Kisses. The first one is really good because of its weird, slightly curdled flavor. The second one's still good but not as, because you're getting used to that taste. At the third, you're starting to wonder if these are really as good as you think they are. By the fourth they've become cloying and unpleasant. There's usually not a fifth.

Sexism oozes out of the narrator, why call her an heiress.... and not just a wealthy woman? It's as if a wife has nothing to do with her husband's success, her labours are erased, unvalued.
She supported her husband through the years, she earned whatever money she had. Double standards, one rule for rich men, another rule for always putting women down.

Heh!!! 42:20 Justice Lloyd McKenzie was my Grandpa’s cousin. Another one of their cousins was an interesting guy with a PhD in English and was friends with Tolkien (Lord of the Rings) and CS Lewis whom he met at Oxford in England. Whitney Meredith Thompson. There were plenty of other interesting cousins too. Meredith “meri” as Tokein called him, told me the book (Lord of the rings) was inspired by a bag of archaeological finds (which included a Roman ring) in a library at the Vines an old estate they visited on their roadster trips through the English country side! I could only dream - I got the one cousin for a Grpa who was totally against education, travel or dreaming of a better life and only believed in work work work work period ! In the Tolkein Scrapbook, Meredith - was the inspiration for the gnome like guy in Lord of the rings . Lol!
