These interviews really show how the drug addiction pandemic is often a coping mechanism and a reaction to severe abuse and neglect. Protection of children should be a high priority in order to help society.

You couldn't be more correct. Children are not born this way. The world makes them this way. And they grow up to be emotionally unstable, mentally ill adults who are really just children that got lost along the way.

@xisobelx373 It's so crazy that you said that about breeding licenses, but it's so true. The fact that anyone can have a child is absolutely terrifying. With the mental illness, addiction, and just absolute insanity running rampant in this world, I can't even imagine the atrocities some of these children, especially in the foster system, have had to endure. Sterilization should be a thing, too. It's radical, but honestly, so damn needed.

leoeoeoeoe to me it seems to speak volumes, in octave and quantity, to the levels of the pain/ abuse/spiritual dissonance/ confusion experienced at that point in time in life; the chosen coping mechanism drugs (could be any other addition or subtraction of a stimuli) which moves them nearly in every other way out of balance, it still can not delete the memory of the impactful moment that created a space for “spice.” A substance that alters her behavior, speech, appearance, daily life, can not alter that memory and the clarity of its delivery. Also can be said that one thing alone for healing or coping is not likely to be very successful. (FYI I don’t think spice in anyway is healing, that’s just my opinion)

I was thinking the same while watching this. Now her family is all gone and all she has left are friends... hopefully some that are not also addicted to something? But likely not. And this breaks my heart.
After all the trauma and then coping by herself... still not forgetting the trauma and all the loss... after all that... I'm certain that she also now copes with people shaming or making fun of her. At very least not taking her seriously which can be scarring in and of itself. What's sad is that eventually that kind of stress and trauma breaks a person so deeply that they dissociate some of it away. The blank but somewhat wounded stare she has in the photo really impacted me.

@@hardmoney8560 - Every word you wrote about this woman s absolutely correct. But, I’m going to stand up for CA as I was born and raised here. She need help as a little child. Her family was severely screwed up, so none was provided either when she was little, or through the years. But as an adult, had she wanted help, there is help. I speak from my many old years of living here, and watching things go down. She could have help this minute, but she seems way too sick to ask for it. What’s left of her probably once wonderful mind was on it’s way to destruction from the age of five, as she described that’s when the abuse began. And, sh says she has no family connections now, and it’s likely that might a good thing. But where she lives no? There isn’t a person there able to help her, let alone themselves. Then, parenthetically and tragically, there are those who just fall through the cracks. This woman’s family should have been locked up many years ago, but there, possibly, there are many cases where a neighbor might have made a call. However, neighbors often (and this ticks me off) “don’t want to get involved”. Bad people do bad things. This country seems to wish to “just move on”. It is, every bit of it, heartbreaking.

This is crushing to watch, God bless her. If a genie granted me three wishes, I would wish for ALL people like Andrea to have a chance to be born again, and live a new life with no suffering or pain, only every joy in life. I know what it's like to grow up with trauma, my childhood was riddled with confusion, unrest, violence, alcoholism exposure and physical abuse. My psychiatrist is an expert in neuroscience and explained how these experiences literally damage the brain. They stop/wildly interfere with development and in my case damage my frontal lobe. I have several diagnosed personality disorders and cannot regulate my emotions without medication. I struggle daily with compulsion and impulse control and so understand all about addiction.
Why am I divulging all this? Because people need educating. NEVER judge an addict. You have NO IDEA what they have been through. Remember this: the brain is an organ, no different than any other in the human body, it can be damaged and therefore it's function can be greatly altered. Please, next time you see someone like Andrea on a bus, or begging on a street corner, give a thought to how they may have ended up there.

An addict is never just a normal, trauma free, happy person that got bored one day, there's always going to be *something* absolutely broken inside of them. It's very unfortunate that the majority of society just looks down on them rather than offering a hand, but I DO also know that sometimes the hand you may offer may just turn you into a vessel they can manipulate in order to get what they want. The part that gets you high is basically thc or some other cannibinoid that's been heavily modified in a lab. So no it's not speed, nor related in anyway. As someone who was addicted to spice/K2 for 3 full years the addiction is like no other, I've been addicted to pure fentanyl, liquid morphine, meth pretty much everything other than crack and Coke but I legit couldn't go more than 15 to 20 minutes without a hit of K2/spice or I would get severe stomach pains ,horrible thoughts and intense temperature fluctuations. Would wake up every 20-30 min out of a dead sleep and wouldn't be able to go back to sleep unless I got another good hit or two in and don't get me started on the mental health effects because it made me full blown agoraphobic the whole time I was on it and a year after. Still recovering from it and haven't touched it in 5 years doctors say I might never be completely normal again but at least I can function and live a productive life with some family that still loves me!!! Best of luck to anyone currently fighting the struggle you can overcome it too!!!

I myself who had a good childhood (which im very grateful for) can´t even imagine the shit you Went throught. none the less i want to tell you there is light. I Think a good way to find joy is to find a passion. my passion is for fish and reptiles but it could be anything that makes you happy.

One thing that is Always good to get a basic understanding of tho is household economics. How you should use your Money smart to not get in to much debt etc etc.

She is articulate and tells her story without self-pity, blame or hatred - I admire that. I can only wonder what her life would have been without the abuse. As a survivor, I know the soul-crushing effect of sexual abuse. I am always ashamed of my body. I avoid displays of affection. I dress to hide and avoid attention. I avoid anything sexual - touch, display or allusions to sex. My husband still gets a hurt look in his eyes when I move away from a loving or playful touch to the breast or bottom. Harm as a child left me with a lifetime tattoo of pain and shame. I've tried counseling, to love myself, to trust men, and to not be angry at my mother for not preventing it then dismissing it when I was brave enough to share. I can't make it go away or "come to terms" - it affects every fiber of my life. I didn't snuggle or hug my children - telling them you love them isn't the same as demonstrating that love.
Andrea, if you're reading this, thank you for sharing your story and truth. I wish you peace. Please know there are people who understand the pain can be overwhelming at times.

I hear you. I've lived the same story. I'm a product of sexual abuse. My abuser died in 2004. And I've severed my relationship with my mom because of her denial of what I experienced. I've had years of therapy but it didn't 'fix' me at all. Thank God I didn't turn into an abuser myself. Abuse ends here.

I was 16-19 in 2010-2013 in East Tennessee where I would smoke Spice daily and use Kratom. I would smoke 3 grams of spice daily for 3 years. It costed exactly 20$ for 3grams of spice but it also depends on type of spice. 20$ for 3grams of Warped, Mindwarped, Chillax, and 20$ for 1 gram of Crazy Camel, Bubonic Chronic, white widow, you had stuff like UpallWeekend, Green Buddha(Made with eucalyptus) Mr.Nice Guy, Flame Strawberry Fields. When it came down to it the fact is it’s bark sprayed with chemicals. Everyday was a different spice and they’d make it illegal to sell and bam next week the same brand is back with a different chemical sprayed on it. I’m not going to lie I loved spice and I had a lot of fun. I miss the taste and smell but it’s absolutely harmful to your health. I wouldn’t smoke it again, I don’t even smoke weed now. The only time I OD on spice was on Mr.Nice Guy which is one I had smoke a million times before and bam all of a sudden I couldn’t walk without Boeing my legs and tilting left or right. My speech and mind were completely fine in every sense, but my body just didn’t work right anymore.

If I understand your response correctly, you don't believe that addiction is a mental illness, is that right? If so, then how do you view addiction? Thanks for your time

Chris Sirhc I view addiction as a choice, as I’ve struggled with it myself. Chronic illnesses are a result of that choice, like low seratonin, toxins in the blood etc. Her body is deteriorating and not because of addiction, but because of the things that she puts in her body. All in all sickness is a byproduct of addiction, put plain and simple addiction is chemical dependency and nothing more.

Nate Kelly it is but it is not always a choice. I got started by trusting my doctor. He prescribed me 40mg OxyContin twice a day at age 17 for back to back shoulder surgeries. He kept me on thhem for 6 months then cut me off out of nowhere. I didn’t understand why I was so sick when I stopped taking them. I had to buy them off the street and it was a downfall from there. Not all addictions are by choice

For me, the neglect I suffered as a child has hindered me more as an adult than the abuse has. I feel like I was never taught how to be an adult. I feel like it’s the same for a lot of SWU contributors.

Exactly, I'm 23 and I don't have a car or a license yet. I bust my ass but still, wasn't taught about credit, or taxes or about shit, wasn't even taught how to shave, I had to bloody my whole face just to teach myself how. I was basically raised by the streets, so I basically have no credit so if I wanted to get a brand new car off the lot I couldn't. I've basically been homeless for most of my adult life, even though I've done nothing but work and bust my ass and I got nothing to show for it. And it's all because society has too many things that you need to know, but apparently parents think all they need to teach their kids is "sit down and shut up"
Oh and this is my favorite one "kids are to be spoken too not heard" they discourage their children from asking questions cause every time they do their parents start yelling at them. I tried to learn from my dad but he was always yelling at me or smacking me around, and when I'd be standing back watching him do something so I could try and learn SOMETHING he'd yell at me to "go sit the fuck down, you're making me nervous!" He acted like a drill instructor, barely ever told me he loved me and was always angry towards me, And I love my father, but he did kind of fuck me up mentally, and it does make every day life difficult. I just wish they would've taken the time to have taught me more about life to prepare me for it, instead of acting like I was a burden. I am a full grown man and cannot blame my parents for how my life turns out, but maybe if my parents cared more about raising me than they did about alcohol It would have helped me out a lot.
