This macro photo was a real challenge. But was it worth it? (outdoor tutorial, tips and ideas)

  • Taking these macro images of wasps nesting was a real challenge and required a lot of patience and a lot of trial and error. But I've managed to come away with a couple of photos I am extremely proud of. And in this week's video tutorial, I'll show you how I took them including the settings I used to get sharp images, how I used LED light to enhance the scene and how I used focus stacking techniques to get the subject in focus.
I was really pleased to stumble on these wasps in the forest. It appeared that they were harvesting wood from an old tree stump in order to use for nest material. There wasn't a swarm, so I felt it was perfectly safe to sit close by and try and take my photos. I'm using an Olympus (or OM System) OM-1 camera today with a 60mm M-Zuiko macro lens. It's a small camera with a fast burst shooting rate which was crucial here to capture the fast wasps in action.
I also show how I looked elsewhere for textures and colours in other images and how I selectively used focus stacking to keep a shallow depth of field.
