That is one cool set! The vertical motors are neat to watch, as you can see the armatures spinning. The Madison cars are a plus, for sure. An excellent video, as always.
I remember seeing this set in that catalog. Very cool you got one. I love late 90s/early 00s Lionel. The late conventional control and early command control stuff were something special.
What an incredible and beautiful set Marty!! I love it. It’s so unique and real looker. I actually considered it back in the day, but I was on a mission to finish my collection of the LRRC Countdown to a Century Series set with the final offering being the Steam Engine. It’s funny that you mentioned about your locomotive being Command Upgradeable, and that’s exactly what I did to a few of my LRRC and Dept. 56 locomotives during those years in the late 1990’s, as well as one GP-7. The GP-7 I did was the 6-18897 1999 Christmas Happy Holidays locomotive. What a great horn that locomotive has. I look forward to your next video of something from that era! Tom
@@MartyE There’s always a goody or two at York that can be gotten. I too was looking forward to York again this year, along with my wife’s first time, but unfortunately, I’m having some serious health issues that won’t allow me to go this year. I really wanted to meet you, and have a nice chat with you. I hope you find some great things at York this year Marty, and as I continue to make strides, I’ll look forward to your VERY informative, interesting, and entertaining videos while I’m recuperating. Tom
Hey Marty, what a wonderful video.I have both sets but, I never upgraded the boards on the clear shell. I would love to upgrade those F3's. Where did you get those boards?
That's a truly unique set Marty! It's not something that would appeal to me personally but I can well understand your enthusiasm. Hey, that's what makes this hobby so much fun, right? I DID get a kick out of seeing that spinning motor armature as the train began to roll! Cool! Did you know Lionel did something similar back in the 1940s? When the 2333 Santa Fe F3 hit the market (1948) Lionel made some with clear plastic shells, ostensibly for demonstrators at trade shows and salesmen samples. VERY rare articles as you might expect! I'm going to York myself this October, my second trip. I can't say I'm looking for anything in particular but who knows what's going to find ME? Maybe our trails will cross? Thanks for posting!
I just saw your reply on the other post! It would be a cool set to see but I'll stick with my bargain basement set of 1999! I have to leave my kids a few dollars in the will. LOL!😆
I have a set of these. I remember seeing them in a Catalog an could never get them. Almost 21 years later an my wife got me the passenger set for our 10th anniversary
I honestly forgot that was an actual set Lionel offered until now! To be frank, I kind of forget a few things cause of my other hobbies and diving head on into fixing my postwar stuff
I remember a fellow club member came back from.York with a set in 99 or maybe spring 2000. Lionel had dropped the price to get rid of them because they weren't moving. Now they have increased in price. I was told by a longtime collector that Lionel actually produced a few in the 40s as sales samples to demonstrate the new f3. He said they were so rare that the few were worth thousands. Let me know if that story is correct.
I can't comment on how many were made but I certainly didn't pay thousands of dollars. I have less than $600 into this set and I bought it this summer. The F3s were used but in excellent shape and the Madison Cars were new but displayed.
The story's correct. Lionel made clear plastic shell F3's as trade show and salesman sample companions for the Santa Fe F3's in 1948. And yes indeed, when they surface for sale they go for thousands. Super-scarce.
Hmmmm. I think they have something else in mind. Seriously though rather than just releasing an expensive locomotive I hope they remember some love for the lower end of the hobby.
Beautiful set! I have one as well. Would you happen to know a place where I could buy the tmcc upgrades? I run legacy on my layout and would love to run it from my Cab 2 base.
I was fortunate enough to know a repair guy. I really think if you look online either on Ebay or online dealers you could come across a et of boards. Maybe if you're on a forum put a wanted to buy ad.
From the manual the kit number is 6-22964 (Unavailable cs-691PCB1061-p Railsounds board and cs-691RSPRA00-p Power board both obsolete) for the railsounds kit and 6-22960 (R2LC code 08 Lionel PN cs-691R2LCC08-p obsolete) for the command board.
Very interesting train and video, thanks for sharing.
It certainly is unique and a surprisingly a good runner considering it's age. Thanks!
Thanks to everyone who watched!

Thanks. I love being able to see the motors. The part numbers on the silhouettes was way cool.
Welcome to the cool kids club with the Spirit and Platinum sets!
Heyyyyyyyy. 👍
What a beautiful set! I love it Marty! The upgrades that you did were awesome!😊
Thanks. Eazy Peazy!
Hey Frank how are you?
I’m doing ok Gus! I hope you are doing well! 😊
Very cool looking locomotives 🚂 👍🏻✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
What a unique set thanks for sharing 😃👍🚂
Thanks. I love watching the Pullmor run through the shell.
A spectacular train-set! It reminds me of locomotive builders’ artwork, showing cut away views of the prime-mover.
Thanks. They are pretty cool. As someone else mentioned, watching the Pullmors spin is pretty neat!

I'm starting to remember why I felt the 90s and 00s had some of the best trains even though not always scale. They were FUN! Thanks for watching.
Very cool and unique set. Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks for watching.
That was informative for sure . Thanks .
Thanks! I try. I appreciate the comment.
Love 'em!
They are pretty cool!
Another great video Marty. Thanks for sharing
Thanks. This video went a little longer than I hoped but I thought showing the command upgrade was worth it.
Really cool set Marty.
Thanks!

Thanks. We'll have to see what I have yet. Got a few new items due in before Christmas. And with York right around the corner, you never know!

Man now that will be cool if Lionel could make a full legacy version for 2025 years ?
