    Tim, this is a post to show my appreciation for all of your covers. You nail it every time and clearly explain how to play it. Thanks for making learning easier and extended times spent at home more bearable!

      Reading your comment again it made me realize you might have asked for it... so I searched through my comments with "jersey giant" as the filter and saw you asked for it like 7 months ago... I actually never saw that I guess. Another subscriber, Jacob, actually randomly commented on another video today asking for it and it was my first time hearing the song when I looked it up... either way, I'm glad I got to it, but sorry for missing your request on it so long ago!

    I’m thinking about tackling this song thanks to your great lesson. The hard part will be to get the guitar part of my brain on autopilot so that I can sing it at the same time. Looks like a fun challenge.

    I’m Confused about how the hammer on‘s pair with the strumming pattern could you explain in more detail please?

    • @duggynuggets7772
      @duggynuggets7772 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Try practicing it by doing a down pick on the 6th string then strumming a simple down up, then do it on the 5th, then do it on the 4th, and keep doing that until you can add the hammer on’s, then do that until you can get it with the strumming pattern

    • @edmondfitzgerald
      @edmondfitzgerald ปีที่แล้ว

      for every base strum you play, there is a downup on the higher notes in between. 2nd fret 5 string strum, hammer on, downup 2nd fret 4th string strum, hammeron, downup on higher notes

    Hey man, I just want to thank you for your awesome tutorials, they're done so well and I think your channel is really underappreciated. That said, I'd love it if you would do a version of this song for us strummers, try as I might, with all the hammer ons and pull offs, this one is just too difficult for me to sing and play at the same time.

    I find the up-down strokes between the picking extremely difficult to have sound well. Tough to figure out what strings to hit, and have the picking remain much more distinct in terms of volume. Getting there though, good tutorial. And the only i can find lol

    • @GavinOCo
      @GavinOCo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Update: Just practiced and figured it out - one of my go-to songs now. Absolutely killer. Just takes time to figure out the strumming after the picking, but it’s rly just the picking you need to focus on

      I’m struggling with the same thing now, seems like the high E and B string just muddy everything up with the down up in between the bass melody. Any tips?

    • @GavinOCo
      @GavinOCo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicholasholm5619 I'd suggest just focusing on the picking as much as possible, and ignore how the strumming sounds. Once you have the picking down well enough where you don't have to think about it, you can focus on the volume/technique of the strum to make it sound how you'll want
      I also pick pretty hardly in this song relative to my strum
      Just keep on practicing it though. You'll notice my update was posted 3 months after my original comment lol, took a while for me

  • @Dillf3
    @Dillf3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey man this is a great lesson! I’m curious on the strumming pattern when hammering on though. Are you always hammering on when you are playing a downstroke? Like on the G chord. The hammer ons are on a downstroke?

    • @TimGuitarLessons
      @TimGuitarLessons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, each hammer-on is being preceded by a down-pick in the strum pattern

  • @riley_keen
    @riley_keen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Okay so I have a question when I look at this song in tabs it doesn’t have the D add 7, and I don’t here the slide you do in the intro to the video is this necessary in the song? Thank you for posting these you have helped me chase my dreams!

    • @TimGuitarLessons
      @TimGuitarLessons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment Riley! I based this lesson off of this version of Jersey Giant that Childers did years ago: th-cam.com/video/AwvGFlXUNEQ/w-d-xo.html
      In the linked version above, I can definitely hear him switching from a standard D major to a D7 at the end of the bridge.
      This D7 gets a bit obscured in Elle King's cover... What stands out most in that D at the end of the bridge is instrumentation that walks up over the D, but I'm pretty sure I'm still hearing the acoustic play a D7 under it all like Childers did

    Hi all, I love playing this and it was surprisingly easy to learn. Any other song / tutorial suggestions for songs involving a solid mixture of picking and strumming, similar to this style? :)

    • @TimGuitarLessons
      @TimGuitarLessons  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Nancy! A lot of Tyler Childers stuff is a similar style to this one with strumming interlaced with little cross picks and hammer ons/pull offs. I’ve got a lot of other lessons by him on my channel too, so definitely scroll through and see if anything grabs your ear!

  • @colecastleman9588

    Am I the only one that gets confused about starting the beat down down up down up and the switching to down down up immediately when song starts? Is this because the hammer ons have the affect of another down stroke or what?

    I remember all them summers
    Playing 'til my fingers bled
    You'd sing the songs and I'd sing with you
    We'd get drunk and go to bed
    Looking back at all them memories
    Lord, I hate to sleep alone
    But if you ever get the notion
    That you need me, let me know
    'Cause it's just two hours to get there, babe
    I can make it back about an hour or so
    Hold you close against my skin
    I need a little warmth on a night so cold
    Singing songs you used to sing
    The one about the lady in the long black veil
    Should have seen the warnings signs
    But Lord, I love to hear you wail
    High and lonesome, hard and strong
    Even if it was a little out of tune
    Hotter than socks on a jersey giant
    Lord, I thought you hung the moon
    I remember all them winters
    Drinking Woodford 'til we drowned
    We'd get wind about a party
    Bundle up and go to town
    Never worry 'bout the police
    Never worried much at all
    I miss those nights of reckless glory
    I'd come back if you'd just call
    'Cause it's just two hours to get there, babe
    I can make it back about an hour or so
    Hold you close against my skin
    I need a little warmth on a night so cold
    Singing songs you used to sing
    The one about the lady in the long black veil
    Should have seen the warnings signs

    High and lonesome, hard and strong
    Even if it was a little out of tune
    Hotter than socks on a jersey giant
    Lord, I thought you hung the moon
    I left town when we were over
    'Cause it didn't feel the same
    Every backroad had a memory
    And every memory held your name
    'Cause it's just two hours to get there, babe
    I can make it back about an hour or so
    Hold you close against my skin
    I need a little warmth on a night so cold
    Singing songs you used to sing
    The one about the lady in the long black veil
    Should have seen the warnings signs
