Bearded Dragon Morphs and How to Identify Yours

Ever wonder what kinda bearded dragon morph you have? Or maybe you keep seeing things like Hypo Zero, high colored wits, translucent dragons, and or leatherbacks and have no idea what people are talking about. Well I dive in deeper into the different kind of dragon morphs out there and how to identify them.
There are recessive genes and dominant genes in all animals. When we say dominant it means only one of the parents need to be visual for the morph in order to create young with the same trait. Recessive means both parents need to carry the gene (either visually, or het). The best way to breed and create stronger recessive morphs is by pairing het to het.
Dominate morphs: Normal scale, dunner, and leatherback are the three dominate scale morphs out there.
Normal scale is what you will find in the wild and most dragons out their. Like their names, this scale really makes them look like dragons.
The next dominate morph is dunner, these dragons have scales and spikes going in different directions. The best way to tell is their chin scales point more in your direction when looking at them face to face.
The last dominate morph is leatherback. These dragons have less scales on their back which make them feel smoother and leathery. There are also micro leathers, these dragons have no spikes on their sides. And also silkies, this is a dragon with no scales whatsoever and feels like skin. They are the result of two leatherbacks mating together. We do not reccomend this morph and don't think you should ever pair a leather with a leather. They are harder to care for and have a lot more problems.
Recessive morphs: Hypomelanistic (hypo), translucent (trans), witblits (wits), zero, and wero (both a zero and wits combined).
Hypo dragons have reduced melamine which typically reduces the dark scale colors a lot in a dragon. The easiest way to identify if your dragon is a hypo is when they have clear nails (no black in them). Often breeders pair hypo with zeros to make them whiter, or pair them with colors to help showcase the color more. It is okay to breed a visual hypo with another visual hypo.
Trans dragons often give the dragon a much more rich color because their skin is more translucent. They have purple/blue bellies at birth, and have really cool gummy scales. Whatever color your working with, when you add trans to the mix they will make the color much more rich and deep. Reds, citrus, and oranges will look more saturated. They will often have black eyes. The best way to identify this morph is when they are babies you will see a more puple/blue tummy. SIDE NOTE: Not all dragons with black eyes are trans and not all dragons that don't have black eyes are not trans. You can have low expression of trans dragons and they won't have black eyes and when they grow up it's hard to tell if they are trans by their belly. Since it's bad to pair a visual trans with a visual trans, this makes it even more important to know the history of your dragon and their parents before breeding them.
Wits dragons are patternless dragons that can retain color. They were first discovered in Africa and called witblits meaning white lighting, because they were the first whiter looking dragon before zeros were shortly after discovered. They will have no dark shoulder pads like other dragons. You should only pair a het wits with a het wits to create visual wits.
Zeros are also patternless dragons but they also don't retain color. So they will range from grey to almost paper white. When you combine the hypo gene with the zero you get a very nice white dragon. They will still have dark shoulder pads. You should only pair a het zero with a het zero.
Wero dragons are when you have a visual zero and visual wits expression at the same time in the same dragon. So to create a wero you want to have a mom that's het zero het wits paird with dad het zero het wits. This will create about 23% visual wits dragons, 23% visual zero dragons and usually only 1 visual wero. They are the whitest dragons out there because they are patternless and colorless with no dark shoulder pads. This is the dead giveaway for a wero morph. If they have no color and no dark shoulder pads it's probably a wero. Because you can only make 1 per clutch makes them extremely rare and expensive. You should only buy these dragons from known trusted breeders who care about the health of the dragons. Only create these using het wero (het zero het wits) with another het wero.

Essentially the last of them were cross bred by the late 2010's. I can confirm. Personally bred the last of our into a citrus line, but nobody wanted anything not leatherback eventually.

So I bought my bearded dragon over a year ago, he’s a hypo trans tiger stripe, his colors are insane, he’s mainly yellow in the face but at times is orange, the rest of his body is yellow with the stripes, any idea if the breeder made a mistake? I’ve been doing a ton of research and can’t find anything like him, and want to know what he actually is before I breed him.

leatherback + leatherback = silky. Some breeders do not breed the silk morph. Their skin is vulnerable, such a dragon needs daily moisturizing and skin protection, they are constantly shedding. Some believe that breeding silky dragons is unethical.
