  • Episode of the CBS show "Omnibus" from the evening of January 9th, 1955 with a live remote broadcast of New York Central's prestigious "20th Century Limited" departing Grand Central Station. Host Alistair Cook rode the head end from GCT to its first stop, with architect Eliott Noyes and TRAINS magazine editor David Morgan providing additional commentary. After the train departs the program moves to inside A tower, the dispatcher's office, and finally a ticket booth, before joining Cooke onboard the head end of the train as it was making its first stop.
Yes, this was a live broadcast. Given the primitive technology of television at the time, I can't imagine the logistics, co-operation and organization of trying to get everything "right" so as to show everything they wanted to without delaying the train. Although apparently the train's departure was delayed by five minutes (reason unknown), forcing TRAINS editor David Morgan to ad-lib for several minutes before the train actually left.
