no that's my point. That's what makes it so competitive and why top players will always come to Europe to play football rather than joining the MLS. So my view is focus on developing players and then send then to Europe to play. The best quality they've manager to produce is donaven (good player. Went to watch him at goodison park). Love to see what he'd be like if he came back and signed for a prem club
I love his mentality and he's genuine. Does this man not look like he will dedicate himself to this team, and work on making soccer move a step forward in this country?
It's a great hire. Just what the US needs: An offensive minded coach with great credentials. We may not have a Messi or Ronaldo in our country, but Jurgen will develop more players, from all ethic backgrounds, to be almost as good as those two.
sorry to get in on this conversation but football (soccer) in China is the most spectators of any sport in their country. Its not their most played sport, but when it comes to watching it, they enjoy watching games like the ones in the Prem, La Liga, Series A :)
@CriticalPedagogy And my apologies if my comment doesn't seem "all-inclusive", I'm simply piggybacking off of Jurgen mentioning "connect with Hispanics", which is a valid point considering that one can theorize the cultural affinity Latino's have had with soccer in the US since the 70's, when Latino leagues began to sprout throughout the US. One thing is certain, this topic definitely merits more scholarship
man.. at this time Nov-17-2012 .. i am so glad to have this guy in charge of out MNT. the Media ...small as it is..( in regards to soccer ..still ) are trying to say this FOREINER IS NO GOOD FOR US...Americans. Jurgen knows that also. by the time this Kraut Leaves the usa soccer Landscape, we will be a Force in Football. i hope he gets a second term after Brasil 2014... no matter what.
"Someone who can score 10-15...goals year in and year out." Clint Dempsey, anyone? Granted, his biggest season have been the two since South Africa. Too bad this wasn't a World Cup year - Dempsey and Donovan have been in terrific form against great competition all year! Just keep it going for two more years (and add some backline help, too)...
The Americans have done great in the last years, I remmeber them years ago and I can see an emprovement. the way I see is that in southamerica most players in their national teams play in Europe; Brazilian and Argentinian national-team players all play in Europe so it shows that for a team to develope further need to experience 1st class tournaments. my country have a few players who play in Europe and it is them who seem to make the big difference,it is because they learn better techniques.
it's tough to say. He had a loan spell at Everton where he scored there against Sheffield united. But he's blew his chances now because Everton has bought a much stronger striker.
o yeah without a doubt your right. But i think they've got into such a habbit of following other teams that they don't wish to start taking their own league more seriously. Japan are another country the same but the FIFA club world cup is being held there so i think its likely to take of even more there then
@daguzify I sure as hell hope so! I want to see Castillo and Torres on the USMNT this time! I am sick of watching our brick footed players with their horrendous first touches!
The US is getting better but the fans have to realise it wont happen overnight but its blindingly obvious that the US is going in the right direction with MLS growing, more foreign scouts looking at and signing US players. Dam when i was younger the US or her players didn't exist fullstop but now every season see's more and more US players playing in clubs all around the world with its national team now showing more depth and numbers than ever before. In 20years the US will join the top 10 sides
podolski played for Koln last season why got relegated. so i think he's used to upset and criticism :) and i'm not surprised Donovan left Everton. Everton is considered a club in England with large built men which aren't afraid to speak there mind. Teams like United there are a lot of tourists so they generally behave themselves at home, but when it comes to away games, the posh people don't go and then they have a good atmosphere
@Makemyday242 i agree with everything u said except the last sentence ..we followed us soccer before the world cup of course it gained alot more following ..but its not like the soccer team had no following b4 the cup
Little problem: Those investors are buying the clubs with borrowed money from the banks - That means that the investors themselves are in a debt after those kind of deals! And here is the interesting thing: After they have bought the club they convert their debt to it! That means: A club has a debt of 200 million - Investor buys it for borrowed 300 million (club now has fresh money and can pay his old debt) - Invester converts his own debt on the club - Club has now a debt of 300 million.
Oh... cologne is a very very strange football city my friend - And Podolski was never criticized there... trust me! He is "Prince Poldi" who can not fail - Even coaches were fired because they didn`t get along with him!
Why do people think that soccer is blocking anyone? If you look at the best athletes in this country they overwhelmingly go into basketball and football. In the rest of the world the athletes go into soccer. The sport isn't blocking the athletes, the athletes choose other sports that are simply more popular in this country. Our "soccer" population - those who put soccer first - is very small, and soccer is so technically demanding that the US can't be good at soccer.
they are higher talented cause the sport is bigger in theyre country then it is in the US. i cannot imagine that a huge nation like the US wont produce worldclass players in the future, cause they have enough potential. many player that MNT has are not homemade, they are all german americans, dutch americans, french americans etc etc. once the quality will improve then u will see more US players play in europe, right now there are some young talented players that play in europe
fair enough. I can't see him getting criticised though. English fans never give any abuse to players with such class. (me being English and been to enough games to know).
So even if MLS would join UEFA (which would never happen because none of the european teams would ever consider flying to the US for having just one game under the week) they would have to start at the bottom of the UEFA ranking which automatically would mean that they could never qualify for the CL or the UEFA Cup because they wouldn`t play in any of those competitions which is the only way to gain point to get up higher in the ranking!
@p1q0 The USA still has 3 times the population of Mexico, 8 times more than Argentina, 7 times that of Spain and the list goes on and on. It all comes down to the way kids are coached and developed. From what I've seen most coaches in the USA dont teach the team aspect of the game in all ages
Brings us back to the starting problem: The leagues in countries like Mexico Brazil Argentina or even Japan are much stronger than MLS - Especially the one in Brazil in which right now a lot of money is pumped in! So young players who are leaving the "academies" (or simply just the streets like in poor parts of South America) are thrown into a much better environment to improve themselves which makes them way more attractive to european clubs than young US players!
Agree with the upside down pyramid. Why is it so evil to sign U12's and pay them? Why do our U12 parents have to pay so much to have their kids play? Our professional teams and national teams have zero financial responsibility for the development of our youth players. An eleven year old actor is paid. A paid intern for a newspaper is picking up a check. A business major is allowed to work during school. But somehow, if you want to be an athlete, it is so evil to be paid?!?!!?
there not allowed. You have to be in Europe for the Champions league. :) but even still, if they were able to produce some quality, then the US public would get some enjoyment out of the world cup and be more involved in the beautiful sport. i'm not sure if you have an North american cup because there is only 2 teams ?; do you ?
ah right okay. Never knew that :) but i can't see them letting them join. European teams will fly over, but there will be barely any fans going and it takes away that most prestigious thing about European football
@georgiascorpion there is nothing to be ashamed of. in the USA football isnt the main sport or atleast in the top 3, and kids dont embrace it. kids in the US only play football when theyre on highschool, in europe, south america etc kids play outside often after school thats where they get theyre technique from and really adapt urself in football. in europe school and sport are seperated u dont need to play soccer through a school. just sign urself in somewhere near ur house
I just read your your message, i bet you feel vindicated. I actually agreed with you when Klinsmann was made manager and not because i thought he'd be better because he was European but because he came with a German mentality which i think suits the American psyche and also because the players will listen to and respect him, if you cant do that with a past World Cup winner, European Championship winner then who the hell will you respect. Here in Europe its obvious the US team is getting stronger
I hope Klinssman actually ends the exclusion of players who actually are more technically skilled and who come from soccer/football cultures. The US MNT kind of reminds me of 'pre-integration' NBA and MLB. The 'first touch' is a question of technical skill that you CAN'T learn unless you actually PLAY soccer. By play I mean play in the way kids like Zidane, Gio Dos Santos, Neymar, learned. Where did Landon and Dempsy learn? In areas with large Latino communities, not a coincidence...
advice to all the football heads, get down the park, street corner, used car lotts, have a kickabout become that player, and no club in the world would ignore your ability to make it to the top!
I am german from Germany... And as far as I know CONCACAF has the so called "Gold cup" where you have to face "great" teams like Canada, Aruba and the Bahamas - They even have their own CL! And by the way: Australia joined the asian soccer confederation because they decided that their confederation was too weak - So it isn`t impossible to join another confederation!
Maybe... but Arsenal is different - You have a lot of talented players there which never reached the highest points of their potential! But if the Gunners are happy with just having a very talented player it is their problem!
I don't think there is one football fan out there that does not like USMNT What a story. And what a great crack team! They play like an EPL team! The discipline, motivation, determination, and outstanding display of teamwork... Wow. SO SO german AND english lol! Amazing. ANd most come from the MLS ranks so it's a plus and a minus. Plus cus they know who they're playing with. MLS DOES have their unique style. MLS doesn't have the best players and they know that so they play an even more tactical game than an EPL team at times. So the style of play adn chemistry is there. But the minus is that then they're a bit naive against european level players. Shown evidently in the Portugal and Ghana games... But Klinssmann is tyring to improve that. They're going to be like Columbia!
pfl95 If they play like an EPL team they might as well pack up and go back to hibernation for the next 100 years. No way in hell will they win the world cup playing like an EPL team.
yes but new investors are willing to pay of a clubs debt. Its what happend with Liverpool last season. They were in bad debt. And an American businessman paid of the debt and then bought the club. What happens and will always happen
Donovan had potential - But it is always the same with spoiled talents from small soccer areas! They are not used to criticism, and when the first rough wind blows in their faces they usually leave! Same thing will happen with Podolski in London - He was a king in cologne went to Munich, failed and then returned!
@CriticalPedagogy I mean, if France and Germany have faced the reality of their soccer culture (ie recognizing the ability of immigrants/people of color) and have modified their teams accordingly WHY can't the US do it? Go to any school with a majority Latino population and scout the ability and technique of the players, you'll be pleasantly surprised. I mean you can't solely focus on size, how tall is David Villa? Messi? Neymar? Tevez?
The whole Beckham deal was a marketing decision - "Oh look we have this world class player - watch our show"! It was like bringing in Howard Stern to AGT! And this CL and UEFA Cup argument is... well... not very bright - A league with the quality of the MLS would never get a starting place in any of those competitions! There are 53 F.A.`s in Europe and only 7 of them have fixed starting places - Another third of those 53 has to qualify or doesn`t even have a spot in qualification!
@Niner6 His job is not to develop players..His job is to pick the best available players. Don't be surprised if he plays the same way as Bradley did. Its the youth development academies and clubs that has to develop players.. The whole infrastructure needs a 180 turn... I dont think the coaching was the answer.. I think Gulati really fucked up not signing Bielsa as Technical Director when they had the chance...
But back to MLS and US soccer: How can they improve? Well the question is what the officials mean when they mention "improvement"! Does improvement mean that they want to become a world class league with world class players from all around the world? Or does improvement mean that they want to play good soccer which automatically leads to a better standing in the world of soccer? I believe they mean the first interpretation: Paying 250 million for a 35 year old Beckham is a bad bad joke!
First of all: The FIFA club world cup is a total - But if small soccer confederations like it let them have fun with it! And it is only in China because the european and south american clubs have figured out that there is a big market to explore - That doesn`t benefit the chinese league at all, especially considering the fact that no chinese team will be part of this tournament because they first of all need to win the asian CL!
The neutral US viewer watches the MLS and MNT and says "Well... it isn`t the best league in the world and we are not even playing in a strong confederation - So why should I care about this crap if we can`t reach anything?!". And successes on the youth level do not mean anything - Several smaller soccer nations constantly are winning trophies on the youth level! But then their players have to join weak leagues etc. and are not able to improve themselves!
Well it change because clubs like Barcelona and ManUtd have big financial problems! Take for example Liverpool - They fell apart when they one time did not qualify for the CL!
i can promise you liverpool didn't fall apart. ( i live in Liverpool) And its not major financial problems. with United is Glazer didn't have the money when he bought the club. But if Glazer couldn't pay back his bills, there would be an enless list of billionaires biding to buy that club
the fact is, football players will always want the thrill of travelling to play football against different countries with large rivalries. This is something which American lacks badly and will never be able to achieve.
i really wouldn't say that no one would want to buy them. There would be loads of billionaires wanting to buy United like an Arab. There has only been one Prem club that has ever gone into admin and no buyer has wanted to buy them out; Portsmouth. So out of all the clubs there have been, there has been one :)
I think you didn`t get my point (could be my bad English) - Yes they are paying the old debt of the clubs they are buying! But they pay those debts and buy the clubs with money from the banks and not their own money - And this new debt they convert on the club so that the club has to pay it! And that goes on and on - New investor comes in, borrows money from the banks, pays the club`s old debt and then converts his own debt on the club - Spiral!
So US soccer has to make a simple decision: Do we play it because we like or do we play it to be the best in it? And always throwing the quality of the WNT into the discussion just shows the lack of knowledge of US soccer officials! Yes... the WNT is great - But nobody in world soccer really cares about women`s soccer! It`s like saying "We are the best in figure skating"!
Oh... Donovan...: He was a young player when he went to Leverkusen (which was still a high class club at this time - Players like Ballack, Lucio,...) and he didn`t make it - Then he decided "I am a big star in the US - So I`ll return to the country where they kiss my butt and aren`t questioning my attitude"! That was when none of the big european clubs wanted to sign him anymore because he was lazy - Only exception a few years later was Bayern Munich (under bad coach Klinsmann)!
The US needs to wake up and look at it's Latino community, which are the stalwarts of soccer in the US. Latino players (of all races mind you, since we are a multi-racial people) are the most technically skilled in this country and there are about 40 million of them in the US!!! That's more than the population of some Latin American countries!!! I mean, we need to get over simplistic nations of what makes a soccer player good. It's not just about speed and strength, it's about technique...
Take for example the fact that in the states whole families watch crappy highschool football or basketball games - Do they give a damn about the quality of the games? Of course not because they love those sports! Totally different thing with soccer in the states! Majority of the people won`t start watching the MLS because it is not the best league in the world! And that totally proves my point of the difference of favorite and non-favorite sports in several countries!
@georgiascorpion the modern way of football, instead of really improve them in physical and athletic part they also need to play and know the game better, the passing the shooting the quick ballhandling, agility and creativity the technique thats what the US misses, there is not really a philosofy. but i can say to u that ur country wi on day be in the top 5 leagues in the world. u have 300 milion civilians so plenty of talents. and americans always learn fast
And this "Why don`t more US players play in european leagues-question" asked even by experts is so silly! UEFA only allows three non-UEFA-players to be on the field during the match - And south americans africans and even asians are higher talented than US players and by the way much cheaper!
@georgiascorpion in a soccer club or whatever u want. now the draft system all the US players gottan drafted. thats not a good way of bringing talents. here every pro football club has a youth academ for instance lets say arsenal 1st squad, then u have under 20 years, under 19 years, under 18 etc. thats how u can bring talents and give better education in football, and giving the right football system, ussually americans play the baisc way of football, they need to learn them
again. Footballs will always (99/100) will go to the main clubs like United, Barca, Madrid, Arsenal. And that'll never change. Ah well, we'll see in the next few years
when he's not even a good player then its definitely a bad joke. Barcelona have said they won't even consider talking about letting messi go unless someone offers 300 million. i'm going to have to go with improving the players and not the league. American will always lack one major factor; its not involved in the Champions league and UEFA cup. :)
The problem with US soccer is they wanna rush everything, they wanna become power house in 5 min! and soccer is not even there game..if your country is not really interested in the game, then don't expect to win over a world where soccer is like a religion, countries like Brazil,Spain,Germany,Italy,France,Netherlands,Portugal,Argentina..etc they did years, decades to develop world class players,a year ago Americans never even talked about soccer until the world cup,and now they wanna beat everyone?!
+ganzo It takes decades. Now we have Miazga, Brooks, Fabian Johnson, Canouse, Trapp and Pulisic. Those are all classy players on and off the ball as well as superior athletes. Soon we will have guys like dela Torre, Carleton, Perez, Zelalem. The iterations are getting better but this takes many years and the MLS has little to do with it but their role is growing.
Look at Alexi. He is spinning his pen and wants to speak. The man, Jurgen Klinsmann, is telling the truth and people like Alexi Lalas do not want to hear what Klinsmann is saying. The US Soccer model is a failed system. There's no other major US national sports team that plays at a worst level than US Soccer. The bottom line is US Soccer needs to attract the top athletes. We'll NEVER win with these soft silver spooned kids who have parents that have bought their way into US Soccer. It's a joke!
Well the ManCity-Sheiks and Abramovich of course used their own money! The Glazers on the other hand have not spent their own money - That`s why for example ManUtd will soon enter the asian stock market to create money for paying its debt because it has grown so big over the last years (800 million €) that nobody really wants to buy this club anymore! And the new Liverpool owners... well... could they be worse than the last ones aka the "razorblade boys"... I don`t think so!
No one could have said it better. We need players that want it! Our recruiting/scouting has to change - the talent is out there!!
Klinsmann is a fucking genius. He is evolving US soccer right now in front of everyone and its fantastic.
in 20 years usa will be the new brazil we will be winning many world cups it'll take time but the money usa has we will get the best of the best!
+itsStawny care to rethink that now that they're in a position to not even get to the Hex?
Tommy2P My position will change on what happens tonight
+itsStawny haha, almost 2 years later;
i respect that, and it was a great showing. hopefully this is the turn of the tide and not just a way for us to keep up this mediocrity
Just came back here to say he was 100% right
The best part of this clip is that it cuts off right before Lalas starts talking.
Great hire. You can tell he is passionate about changing the mindset about Soccer in the US.
2 minutes and 34 seconds
In that time Klinnsman made every US fan Happy and showed he can lead and he has a vision
no that's my point. That's what makes it so competitive and why top players will always come to Europe to play football rather than joining the MLS. Klinsmann spoke the truth and didn't sugar coat it like the US is so close to win the world cup. They know they have to start from the bottom up
It's a great hire. Just what the US needs: An offensive minded coach with great credentials. We may not have a Messi or Ronaldo in our country, but Jurgen will develop more players, from all ethic backgrounds, to be almost as good as those two.
i love the fact that this clip cut off what alexi said
Jürgen spitting facts. He’s completely correct.

can't believe this chapter has ended... for now...

@superstarlex32 Thank God he is our Coach now! hehe can't wait for this man!
I think it's safe to say with his run of form currently, he'll be welcomed if he'll stay.

But US has enough good technical Players? ;)
@AmericansMakeMeSick i agree with what you said about Klinsman bringing technicality etc.
Finally, USA has a coach who knows who to do.

I don't think there is one football fan out there that does not like USMNT
What a story.
@AmericansMakeMeSick klinsmann brings nothing but a good speech
@murdoc24 Well to begin with US is decades behind of having the same players that Klinsmann had in Germany 2006....
( i live in Liverpool)
And its not major financial problems. with United is Glazer didn't have the money when he bought the club.
@Linky360 I guess never watch & heard commentors from Televista.
Thank you for cutting Lalas off!
@jadedfeelings21 You can only improve yourself through real competition - Friendly games do not mean anything.
@superstarlex32 HES THE COACH NOW!!!! WOOOO NO MORE BOB BRADLEY!!!
20-30 goals a season you?
Klinsmann will teach americans to call it football.
@superstarlex32 a year later your wish has come true
Well, you say stuff like that on ESPN and they make you your leader.
And this "Why don`t more US players play in european leagues-question" asked even by experts is so silly!
UEFA only allows three non-UEFA-players to be on the field during the match - And south americans africans and even asians are higher talented than US players and by the way much cheaper!
@georgiascorpion in a soccer club or whatever u want. now the draft system all the US players gottan drafted. thats not a good way of bringing talents. here every pro football club has a youth academ for instance lets say arsenal 1st squad, then u have under 20 years, under 19 years, under 18 etc. thats how u can bring talents and give better education in football, and giving the right football system, ussually americans play the baisc way of football, they need to learn them
Damn 14 years later the same topic is being discussed hahaha
The US planned to win in 10 years when the MLS put together in '96, that was 2006. We are in 2015. not the plan is 2022! :-) freaking B.S.
I think its funny listening to Americans listening to Football.
@superstarlex32 IT HAPPENED
Bradley and his coaching staff must be fired as well!!
@superstarlex32 uhh yeah...
remember this comment
i know, Saying Football is for poor cities is funny. I'm sure European countries could afford to play any other sport in the world
I am surprised they can understand that scouser
