I Worked in the centre of gloucester in the early 80'S. I recognised a few things in the video, but there was a lot I could not place. Very interesting clip.
I played in a Gloucester band called the Rebounds. I joined them as the third sax.we played every Friday and Saturday night, we practised at the Ship Inn on Thursday nights. We were fully booked a year in advance. It was a clean band, no drugs just good old rock n roll, fats Domino etc.Gerry Doxey was the main man and played the guitar properly., by that I mean he played all the chords correctly.
Ah, the good old 70s. When unemployment was astronomical, Fred West was in his prime and Gloucester town planners developed an unhealthy obsession with ripping everything historical out of the city center and replacing it with concrete.
No way..thats a disaster..what a shame, those fountains and stepping stones made Gloucester really different..all surrounded by willow trees and benches.
In 2018 I spent a great summer living in Cheltenham and almost daily communted to Gloucester, I loved it. It's a shame it came to an end as I really got attached to Gloucester.
Gloucester is lacking in many ways, but it's not a bad city - the docks and cathedral are great places. My ears are bleeding after the music in the video though...
is kings square the bit that has the fountains and stepping stones in? are the fountains working now ??, they wernt going a few years back..what year is this exactly ?.
@darthvadersgay Yep thats the biggest difference for sure! And back then you had less chance of being stabbed or offered drugs. Wont be long before all the street signs are written in Polish.
At 1 min 48, there's a brief shot of the BHS. I remember having sausages and beans with my mum in there resturant on paper plates for children. I then proceeded to try to climp into the conveyer taking the dirty plates etc to the kitchen. I was sharply escourted into the kitchen where the a lady showed mw where I might end up....Im a large comercial sink of steaming soapy water! Never did that again!! memories.
Yes BHS..I used to have a coffee and a ciggie with my mum in there..and Debenhams which is also going. Feel slightly depressed watching this but Gloucester tends to have that affect on me. 😑
I found this quite disturbing. I always watch these UK drive throughs because of the historic medieval buildings and narrow streets.. and it is interesting how people cope with modern driving challenges on olde english streets, like in Bristol. But here all I see is demolition of everything historic, and a lassex faire attitude about it from the narrator. Did y;all really care so little about your ownn history back then?
Seems like Gloucester really lost its identity in the '70s, when they started pulling down random buildings and replacing them with random concrete structures. No consistency at all and they really haven't aged well. Terraced Victorian and older buildings still look fine today, because the design is consistent, but with all those "quirky" design changes, the city centre just looks a mess. Shame.
i live in gloucester now and me and my mates all say its a shithole. Too bad it's become unrecognisable and almost unattractive but at least there's history there.
Born and raised in Longford. but emmigrated to Canada in the early 70's. This brought back quite a few memories. Thanks for posting .
I grew up in Gloucester..now I live in the Far East...gosh...talk about brings back memories..the New Inn was the haunt of my youth!
absolutely fabulous - loved it thanks for posting

Ahhh ... that has just reminded me of all those vending machines that used to be down the back of the Bon Marche (long before it was Debenhams) ....

Still the same, minus the serial killer
Honestly I always wondered where the obsession with...flat... concrete came in. It's just gotten worse
“In his prime” 🤣
Awesome music! I used to live in Gloucester.
Have you notice that at 3:34 a couple nearly get mashed by a car in the background
No way..thats a disaster..what a shame, those fountains and stepping stones made Gloucester really different..all surrounded by willow trees and benches.

It's a shame they tore down so much history. I was born in 65 and remember a lot of this.
